My Recovery from Obesity

Oh dear. :D

Congrats, Don. I'll put the necessary hardware together and hopefully get your song recorded before I leave town on Monday.

After months of losing 3-6 pounds per week, it was funny to finally get hung at a weight... one pound shy of 100! I think God was messing with me a little... keeping me humble. By the way that was only time since starting that I had a 7-day span during which I gained weight. I gained 0.2 pounds in 7 days during the last week and a half.

I didn't do as well yesterday as the day before. I did drink 1.5 gallons of water. I've found that using a 1 gallon water bottle to drink from is easier for me to track my water consumption than counting multiple 1/2 liter cups... I lose track that way. It may be bulky and awkward, but then again, so am I. :)

I am famous amongst friends and family for my seafood cooking, so yesterday I caved in and cooked fried sea bass for 10 of us. I was ambushed. They all conspired to get me to fry fish by asking first if I would cook a family dinner, then dropping off 4 pounds of fresh sea bass fillets. Anyway, I cooked. It was good. I ate fish. Damn. Even though I *love* fried sea bass, I said several times during the day that would pass on the fish this time. But I caved in. "I'll just have one piece" I said, moments before eating three. Aargh! I did skip the white rice (it's a Japanese thing, sticky rice with fried fish), and ate watermelon and cucumber salad to round everything out. Oh, and I skipped the butter pecan ice cream my sister brought.

I tried to work out on the rower again last night. Eked out a whole 1500 meters before my middle back cramped up. Apparently the rower was a bad idea after spending all day building a shed, hauling 100-lb beams around by myself. Thankfully, I have a beautiful, delicate wife with hands like an iron worker who was right there to work the kinks out of my tired muscles. Ten minutes later I was asleep, so apparently working out was not in the cards.

Despite all this, I was down 1.0 pounds this morning. I am feeling a little safer about the thin line between me and the 100 pound loss... I just don't want to back slide. Today might be a challenge, as we're going to friends' for dinner... and friends rarely cook food I can eat comfortably. I'll probably load up on fruit/veg before heading over there.

it might not have been the fast loss you normally have but a pound down is still a good loss :)

Thanks all! It's been a great journey so far, but I'm still feeling keenly aware of how much is left to do.

Lose a load more weight, and then dial in a healthy, long-term lifestyle that'll allow me to live healthily, yet still enjoy life. At best I am only cautiously optimistic that I can accomplish all that. I've tried hard to only look at this as a single day's efforts and not get too far ahead of myself, but no that I've hit one of my bigger goals of losing a hundred, I'm falling into the trap of looking at too much at a time and getting overwhelmed.

This weekend I ate pretty well and drank water pretty well, yet have slightly gained. I weighed in at 356.4 this morning. I know I am doing things right, but the difference has been the amount of outdoor activity I have been getting. I am in process of building a 10'x10' outdoor shed and am about 50% done. I am hauling lumber, erecting posts, pouring concrete, putting up a roof, etc. Tremendously busy with hard work, yet still I gain. A few months ago, my friend Quercus struggled with a similar problem while he worked his butt off in the field all day, yet couldn't lose weight. I think I may be dealing with a similar problem. I am feeling fitter and stronger than I have in years, though, so I am not really bothered that much. More like, I am just a little pissed. :D

Today I will eat greener and drink like a fish. Exercise will happen outside.

Awesome job on the 100 pounds down buddy!

It takes 18,144 pennies to make 100 pounds.

Sorry to hear your weight loss has stalled. I'm just getting back on track after a major derailment. The measuring tape helped me through the stall. I am happy to see you use your energy in making lasting things. That's way more productive than a gym. Don't let the stall in the weight loss discourage you from continuing your projects. You may be at a point in your weightloss where the numbers start to slow down. I hope not, but don't overdo things in an effort to try to keep the phenomenal pace off loss that you've had so far.

Thanks, Mystic, Quercus and Belinda! I have been very, very fortunate that my losses have been so steady for 5 months. I know there are many people who put in comparable efforts in their own programs and have much different results, so I am thankful that things have gone my way so far.

To date, my losses by month have been 28.8, 19.7, 17, 19.4, and most recently 14.8 pounds. Although I've expected the loss per month to decrease, I think this last month's numbers are low due to my weaker effort, rather than my body fighting back. I put in a pretty weak 10-day span in the middle of the month where I struggled to lose like I should have. There was an additional pound or so I lost prior to my official "first month". I'm hoping for a decent rebound this month, maybe 17-20 pounds lost, then I'll try to achieve about a 15 pound per month average for awhile after that. That would be my "best case" scenario.

Finally got to work out on my new (to me) rowing machine last night! I've been too tired everyday after working on my projects Chicken Fortress, Garden Shed and Kitchen Cabinets) that I've just not had the strength to row too, but last night I did manage a short and strenuous 16 minutes. The other time I rowed, I covered only 1550 meters in 16'. This time I covered 3000 meters in 15', so I felt awesome! All that was after building the shed rafters and adding the roof underlayment yesterday afternoon. I got my work in.

Weighed in down a bit to an even 356. I ate well and drank much better that the day previous.

Thank you Tru! Thanks, Mystic!

I did the rower two nights in a row, but last night I switched back to the bike, to mix things up. I love the rowing machine, but I still lack the stamina to do a full 30-45 minute routine without going really easy. Maybe tonight...

I ate like a beast yesterday. It was almost all healthy food, but I ate a LOT. I'm not sure what it was about, but I'm kind of taking a break for a week or so and eating healthy, but not as strictly as I did to achieve 3-5 pounds per week until I hit 100-lbs lost. I may be just making excuses, but I really am trying to give my body a chance to "catch up" to the fact that it weighs so much less; I'm letting the fat redistribute. :)

I weigh 355.2, which is down a bit over the last couple of days.

Plan for today is to eat healthy, eat when I'm hungry, and work out. Oh yeah, and drink a ton of water, as it's hot. Hopefully I lose weight, but if not, consider it a brief respite.

You're down 1.2 pounds in 3 days., Not exactly grinding to a halt on the weightloss. Keep the food healthy and the water coming and maybe it won't need to be a brief respite. I'm jealous of the rower. That would be an outstanding way to rebuild my back.

No, you're right. I am still losing, but the trend is not good. It'll stabilize some day, then I can look at changing up my system if needed. I still have a few cards I haven't played yet, as I haven't needed them. I have some leeway in the areas of exercise (doubling up or adding more cardio) or eating (cutting fat or doing a juice meal-replacement). I just haven't tried them to date because what I was using was working.

Dude, the rower rocks. After talking to someone else on this forum (Steve, i think) I decided I wanted one, so I started scouring craigslist. But as fast as they were listed, they'd sell. I found a website called IFTTT.com that will search a site like craigslist for you (every hour) and send you an update via facebook or text when it finds something. It took 3 months, but I finally was first to call a guy (actually 2nd, but I got lucky) and picked it up.
