My Recovery from Obesity

Don you are showing amazing progress!!! 60lbs is super awesome!! Congrats on the push up, sure it is one of many to come:)

Thank you, Mands! I appreciate you swinging by!

Weigh-in was good... down 1.0 pounds to 395.2. Not a great day eating -- I started eating too late and didn't eat enough --- but it all worked out alright, Rode 7.6 miles in 30' again... no issues.

Today I'll eat better and drink more water.

I've heard that weight loss in excess of 1% of your body weight per week is risky and/or likely to result in maintenance issues later on. Regarding the latter, I've not worried about it too much... I tend to think that long-term maintenance issues are more likely a result of quitting a weight-loss program once desired results have been achieved, then sliding back into unhealthy eating & living habits afterward. That's why I am trying to adopt healthy eating & exercising habits now that I can maintain (to some degree) forever. Anyway, it has made me wonder what percentage of my starting weight I have lost per week since starting. Here are the results:

Week 01: 1.64%
Week 02: 1.10%
Week 03: 1.18%
Week 04: 1.66%
Week 05: 0.14%
Week 06: 1.36%
Week 07: 1.29%
Week 08: 1.16%
Week 09: 1.03%
Week 10: 0.89%
Week 11: 1.05%

What's it mean? Damned if I know. But at least I can see how I'm doing relative to that magical 1% Number.

Edit: The total percentage of my starting weight I have lost to date is 13.5%... that's cool!

2ndEdit: Had to tweak some numbers... my excel skills need brushing up. :)

I've heard the same thing, Don. Since I've started I've lost more than 2% about half the time. I contemplated eating a little more to compensate, but ultimately decided to keep things as is.

You guys approach weight loss in such a scientific manner - good on you! :) Maybe I should do the same...
PS/ I put an omelet on the menu for next week!!! :p

I think that's a good call, Cory. If what you're doing to lose the weight is healthy, whatever the results you get are probably good.

4-5X per week for me.... I know, I know, it can get boring. But I LOVE omelets!

Weighed 394.8 today, down 0.4 from yesterday. All things considered, a good day.

I know getting carried away with data manipulation can be risky, but after 77 days of collecting information regarding my weight loss I've started creating some predictive models to anticipate future weight loss... this is all for fun... I recognize that there are a LOT of variables that can affect the actual outcome.

Using the model I believe is most "accurate" I think I will hit the 100 pound lost milestone sometime between May 15th and 31st. That means I will have a month before the 4th of July (Independence Day) to continue to lose before I cut loose on the 4th and party like it's 1999. I want to be free to celebrate after I am safely beyond the 100 pound lost mark.

Nope. I'm not there yet. I know it's risky to get ahead of myself, but it's the way my brain works. I like to anticipate future events. :)

My model has me losing at a rate of 0.78% of my body weight lost per week (2.1 pounds) right now. Way back in early days in August it was about 0.83% (which was 3 pounds when I weighed 358).

Good job on the model. I think having one has helped me quite a bit, but who knows maybe I'm wrong. :)

Thanks, MrVee. Yours is what planted a seed in my mind a couple of months ago.
I wanted to do it last month, but needed more than a month and a half of data to base a model on. As of today, I have 77 days, which is enough to create a rudimentary one. It's a simple model, but it is adaptive. It's using my real-time weigh-in data and predicting future outcomes -- so, if/when my weight losses slow, it should predict lesser results. I overlayed my actual data to the model, made a tweak or two, and now the two sets of data now are pretty closely matched. Like yours, I can already see the declining rate of loss.... initially, my loss rate was 1.4%, but now it's down to about 1.25%. I suspect I'll maintain a rate greater than 1% for several months, as I have so much more weight to lose than you-- or most others. Then it'll (hopefully) stabilize at numbers close to what you're seeing.

You certainly do put a lot of though into this "game"... which you're gonna win by the way!! I'm also interested in seeing how your model works. Keep up the good work! :)

Wow Don, you've got it all work out to the T! Now just to go for it and achieve the results - I know you gonna kick butt in this challenge. I've also signed up and its gonna be exciting to see all the weight loss!!

Thank you! I think it's becoming obvious that I tend to over-think almost everything. That is ME.

Weighed in DOWN today, which surprised me because I ate a reasonable amount of pizza last night at a friend's going away party. I'm at 393.8, down 1 pound from yesterday, and down 5.2 pounds over the last 5 days. It's a good run.

Having a dinner party tonight AND celebrating Mom's birthday tomorrow night, so it could be a challenge to finish down over the weekend. We'll see.

If you do wind up a little heavier, don't let it get to you. That's life. You have to have cake at your mom's b-day party!

That's awesome news Don! I'm so happy for you that your numbers are getting lower and lower. Challenge aside, I hope you continue to lose (weight that is) over the weekend. I hope you enjoy your events over the weekend. :)

It's like my husband - he eats pizza and loses weight. I juice and I gain!! Oh the mysteries of the universe....

Congrats to everyone on their weight journeys. I just joined this group tonight. Looking forward to chatting with you all on this journey.

Thank you all, very much.

Justina, trust me, I won't tempt that pizza thing many more times. I only ate 2 small slices and ate well the rest of the day... otherwise it would have been a gain.

Weighed 392.8 today. That's a 1 pound loss, and more importantly, I surpassed my Dietbet.com betting weight... which means I will be one of the winners and will get my money back as well as a slice of the winnings. I had 28 days to lose 4% (~16lbs) and I hit that number with more than a week to spare. I may be doing more of those bets/contests.

Used my new Vitamix multiple times yesterday, including while preparing dinner for our guests. Green shake in the a.m., home made hummus, caesar salad dressing, chicken marinade, and sorbet for dessert. I am liking this tool.

Sidenote: It still hasn't completely settled in that I am now fighting my through the 390's. Literally 2-1/2 months ago I was almost 460 pounds. Today I will find something that weighs 60+ pounds and pick it up to remind myself that I'm not carrying it around with me right now.

Don, that is so great. I had a similar idea. Luckily my brother owns all these plates from his power lifting. I have set points where I'm going to carry that weight in a backpack or something. 30 lbs, 50 lbs, and then 100 lbs.

Congrats on the dietbet thing too! You will literally get paid for dropping weight. :p

Your progress has been phenomenal! I don't like competing against you. Our 1%s are 3.2 and 3.9 pounds and you have been losing a frigging pound at a time. I'm going to have to go on the epiphyte diet.
