My Recovery from Obesity

Glad you're feeling better about things. Everybody stumbles sometimes. Who knows? You might be surprised by the weigh in tomorrow.

I'm late for the party!!! :svengo:

Well done in accomplishing that 415 pound milestone.

You will be down to that 50 pound lost milestone in no time at all at this rate... You are really having an amazing project there.

Cory, thanks!
Omega, thank you for your support. You are one I really look to for assistance, because you have accomplished what many of us are hoping... sustained, maintainable weight loss. Dropping weight is one thing, but continuing this process for 6+ years as you have is a feat. I hope to be able to make that claim...in 2019. :)

OK, weigh in today is not bad, not great, and not surprising. Down 0.4 lbs again, for a total loss to date of 44.4 lbs. That's a total loss of 9.7% of my starting body weight since starting. When I hit 409 lbs (hopefully within a few days to a week) I'll have lost 10%.

By the way, I said "not bad, not good and not surprising" because for the last few days I have been eating "ok" and exercising and drinking H2O "ok", but I just haven't felt right. That may not make sense to others, but for me, it just felt like I was off in some way. I really believe it is just my body telling me "Hey man, you need to give this whole eating right and exercising thing a rest" and it's going into some sort of "fat guy preservation mode".

This doesn't bum me out at all (I am VERY fortunate that my weight is still coming off, i realize) it just makes me want to understand the mechanics of what's going.

Two weeks ago, I had a six day span where I lost, on consecutive days: 1.2, 1.2, 2.0, 1.0, 2.2, and 1.0 pounds.
The very next (and most recent) 8 days (where I changed nothing in my plan) I lost: 0.6, 0.6, 0.2, 0.8, 0.0, 1.0, 0.4, 0.4 pounds. Still very good losses, but obviously different than before.

If all else in my lifestyle is staying the same, I am assuming that the difference is internal to my body. IT is the variable.

I just find this balancing/magic act of Weight Loss to be very, very curious.

Today's Plan: Bah, anyone reading my diary knows the drill. :) Second verse, same as the first.

I've viewed what I'm doing as a science experiment I'm conducting on myself. I haven't really a clue what is "supposed to happen" so I just do what I need to and see how it goes.

The steady weight loss so far has been a great thing, so just keep on track and try and do the best you can and keep up the excellent work.

Thanks, MrVee. I think the "just do it and let the details work themselves out" plan is probably the smartest way. You're right. We KNOW that in the long run, doing the right things (eating, hydrating, exercising) WILL provide the ultimate payoff... better health.

The Mathematician/Scientist side of me just can't stop looking for the primer to solve this puzzle. :)

Thanks for the comments, too.

On another note, here's a chart showing the daily change in my weight since beginning this process last month. Nothing super interesting here, but if you squint your eyes, you might see a bit of a repeating pattern in Loss Days vs. the Hold/Gain days... or maybe not.

It looks like you are going to bury me in this 10% race. I didn't do myself any favors with this weekend, but I won't let you stay in my sig too long. Dude, you're out of the 4teens!

hahaha you re too funny!

BTW - you are still doing great - downward trend is a good trend..
nice table...you guys with your tables & sciences are so cute!

Hi Don. Sorry to butt in, I just wanted to say that I find your thread VERY inspiring. Your attitude and approach to this entire transformation is simply wonderful, I love the way you look into everything that happens to your body and how interested you are in understanding the why's and the how's. Not to mention you make me giggle each time you post "interesting!" or "very, very curious!". I can almost picture you scratching your head and gaze into the distance while pondering on the great misteries of Weight Loss.
You're doing great, keep it up!

Thanks Justina! I know, I know. There does seem to be an overload of data-heads on this site.

Thank you, Corina! First off, you are definitely NOT butting in. I'm glad to hear from anyone else battling the bulge with me. Granted, I may have more of a bulge to battle than most everyone else in here, but when it comes right down to it we all have the same fight to fight. I may make you giggle now, but according to my wife my idiosyncrasies about "understanding things to the Nth degree" isn't quite AS funny after a bunch of years. :)

By the way, I really do believe that the key to success in getting healthy is understanding how my body behaves and reacts under specific conditions, then trying to live within a set of rules that gives me the best chance of success. Sometimes it won't work very well, sometimes it will work pretty well, and sometimes it works really well.

Thanks again for dropping by!

Don, I gave you a kick a few days ago but you are beating yourself up over this. You are overthinking things. Just eat the right foods, do your exercise and the results will follow. Whether the loss is slower something is obviously happening inside of your body that we can't explain or understand. I'm also at a point where I'm losing very little and it's frustrating the heck out of me but you know what? I feel healthier, I feel good and love the comments on my weight loss. So take all the good stuff in.

You are doing fantastic!!!!! Just keep doing it Don!

Hey Don, figured I was due for a visit - or an acknowledgment (I've been reading for the last couple weeks). You're really doing a helluva job, man, keep up the great work. I'll be happy to have another rower on the board!

Thanks, John! Man, I *really* want a rower.
I've found them new (w/ the right monitor 3 or 4) but am having a hard time convincing my banker that it's a ok right now (or worth giving up part of the house). Used, they are hard to find. Older ones for $4-600, but those w/ a PM3 or 4 are selling used for $800-1000... right now, it's on the "keeping an eye open" burner... by Summer, I hope.

Mands, Hi! I'm really NOT beating myself up over this... I am a thinker by nature. I look at a situation from several different perspectives to "fully" understand it (I call it getting my head around a problem), then develop and apply my "best fit" solution to try and resolve it. Gee, you can't tell I've been trained to problem solve for a living, can you? ;)

----------

OK, today's weigh-in was good... down 0.8 pounds to 411.8 pounds for a total loss of 45.2. Forty-five friggin' pounds! Woohoo! I ate, drank and exercised GREAT yesterday (first time in a week) so I just want to try and repeat that today.

My dilemma right now is this: I have six days left until the end of my 2nd full month on this new plan (I track my data according to full 30 day months).... I am 4.8 pounds away from 407 pounds and a FIFTY pound total loss. Should I be satisfied with how things are and just take whatever I get? Or should I put on a PUSH and shoot for 407 by the 5th of March?? It would require me to eat and drink the same, but double my exercise regimen until then.

I would really like to hit the 50 pound mark, but I want to be reasonable too....

Oh, to hell with it. No one ever climbed a mountain by just thinking about it, right??

Of course nobody ever died in a mountain climbing accident in their living room thinking about it, either....

Hi again Don. Just my 2 cents here, I think you shouldn't PUSH (capital letters), but you could maybe push (normal letters, see what I did there? :p) just a tiny bit to encourage those last few pounds to get lost (literally!). If you were to double your exercises out of the blue, you will probably find it difficult and there's a chance it might discourage you from doing even as much as you're doing now in the future.

But if you were to add something to it, it will count in the long run, enough to be visible over 6 days. Like... climbing some stairs for 5 minutes a day? Or get a skipping cord and do 5-10 small jumps if you can? Or well you get the idea. It will make you feel good about yourself, because you ARE doing something, but it will not exhaust you to the point where you just want to lay down and die.

Also, you started January 4th and your goal was to lose 50 lbs in 2 months? But January 4th to March 5th is not two months, February only has 28 days, so there's a 3 days loss right there lol. I know, I'm good at... gimmicking things out. But maybe it would be easier to set your goals in weeks rather than months, at least all weeks have 7 days no matter what :D

You're right. I think doubling has the potential to cause other, unforeseen, issues rather than gaining the desired result.

OK, I have an idea along the lines of what you're saying. In one hour, my daughter has soccer (football) practice that lasts an hour and a half. I'll go with her, but walk the oval 1/4 Mile Track around the pitch while she practices. Good idea? :)

Oh, by the way, my "months" are actually 30-day increments that began on Jan 4th. Like the first "month", this current "month" will be exactly 30 days long and will end on March 4th.

Thanks for checking in again. I do appreciate the help!

1) well done on the loss!!!

2) I think you should be super-duper satisfied!!!! Your body & skin needs to adjust - let them - keep doing what what you are doing because it's working amazingly well!!

Congrats on the loss!

I think you could lose those 7 lbs by March 5th if you really pushed and wanted to. You should try for it, but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't quite happen.

Thanks for giving your input Justina and Cory. I've decided to stay the course...mostly.

I will eat drink and exercise primarily as I have been, EXCEPT I will be especially diligent about not straying... no mini snacks, no extras, and no skipping (or going light) on workouts.

--------------------------------

Today's weigh-in I am down 1.0 pounds to 410.8 pounds.

I had a feeling it would be a decent one because I hit my plan pretty well yesterday. Ate lots of greens, a healthy and smallish dinner, drank enough water that I was continually having to pee, and I did my longest (non HIIT) bike session to date... 30 minutes and 7.69 miles.

This week's rides have all been non-HIIT and for 30 minutes. I've been working on going faster each night. The last 4 nights have covered the following distances: 6.72 miles, 7.45, 7.53 and last night's 7.69 miles. I'm shooting for 8 miles (16mph pace) sometime this week.

Oh, and my weigh-in today marks the ten percent line. I have lost 10.1% of my original starting weight of 457 pounds.

Today's plan is identical to yesterdays. Eat right, drink right, ride my bike like I'm on fire, and hope for the best.

Don't know if you've read any of this guy's stuff about cheats and breaks when you're losing weight, but he seems to know his stuff, if you don't mind the ego in some of the write-ups.

Loving the choice of rower :) Got myself a Model D with PM3 here. Beast of a machine! But know I'll get most of the money back if/when I ever sell it :)

I empathise with you and I also eat to curb boredom, loneliness and self esteem issues (currently living in a sour marriage situation) and applaud your efforts. As you lose weight you gain more inner power to keep on losing, helped along by the fact that you must be feeling better in yourself as the weight drops.

Started on forum last Saturday weighing 93kgs, also used to eat loads after 11pm, not now, oatmeal breakfast, liver cleansing herbal tablets (liver is overloaded sorting out excess food intake and apparently a more efficient liver helps pump out fat better), meal substitute protein bars for lunch and dinner as light as possible with vegetables etc, only last night was family take out day and I cleaned out the plate and then some more, bad mistake, my digestive system kept me awake all night, lesson here is to avoid excess food and going back to bad eating habits.
Don,you have certainly helped inspire me to keep back on track
Hope my reply is useful.
