My Recovery from Obesity

Awesome loss today. Down 2.0 pounds. No explanation for it other than I've been eating/drinking water/exercising everyday like a boss. Did a pseudo-HIIT exercise on my bike last night that lasted longer and pushed me harder than any I've done since starting. I felt AWESOME afterwards. Ate a bit light... maybe 1200-1400 cals? Here's what I ate:

B: 2 Egg Omelet w/ Mushrooms & Spinach (This is my day's biggest meal, anymore)
L: Kippered Snacks (smoked, salty fish) and a banana (I avoid salt, but drink VOLUMES of water to compensate)
S: 6oz Chobani Yogurt & 0.5C unsalted, raw almonds.
D: 1 Block (~2C) Cubed Tofu w/ shredded Daikon Root & Shoyu (It's a Japanese thing from my childhood)

I stopped eating by 7pm, I also had a few almonds throughout the day and drank about 4L of water.

So, my weight is now just under 421, down 36.2 pounds since 1/5/13.

Way to go Don!

I love Japanese food! Combine it with Thai food and you have the bulk of my diet for the years that I was vegetarian. We still eat plenty of tofu and tempeh. There was a long period in which I ate tofu udon with baby bok choy almost daily. We always have shoyu, tamari, rice vinegar, wasabi etc. in the house. It's difficult to get good Japanese veggies here. I miss tsukemono sushi too.

Thanks, guys! Like you, I'll happily take my good days when they come.

Quercus, I grew up with Japanese food, but have a special place in my heart for Thai as well. I LOVE spicy. Hardest part of my current eating plan is removing any foods that convert too easily to sugar in my bloodstream. Pasta, I'm OK without. Rice? I miss my dear friend rice.

Hot, freshly cooked new crop rice, tossed with 1 raw egg and some shoyu (yes, raw), mixed well until the egg "sets", then sprinkled with furukake (seasoning that has seaweed, sesame seeds, wasabi, bonita flakes, and other goodies) and served with freshly made pickled vegetables.... Mmmmm. That's one dish I WILL have again someday.

By the way, if you can get vegetables like nappa cabbage, eggplant, cukes and the like, you can buy the pickling seasoning packets online and make the pickles yourself. I make a good tsukemono pickle with nappa cabbage, sea salt and chili flakes that is ready overnight and is pretty tasty.

Not yet, Justina. In the first stage of this "dietary change" I'm pretty strongly restricting as many higher glycemic index foods as possible. Quinoa, while not terribly high (53 on the GI scale) is still comparable to some potatoes and brown rice... also foods I've restricted.

After I'm down another 80-100 pounds, I'll revisit my accepted foods list and I imagine some things like quinoa will be allowed on a limited basis.

I second that. We eat a combination of wild rice and quinoa, which is high in fiber, high in protein, and has a much lower glycemic index than white rice.

Also, I looked at the little pickle presses and recipes online. It looks like I can get a press and furikake for a low price on Amazon. I may have to dust off the rice maker. Sorry Don, I'm strictly a calorie counter. Would I want Wasabi Fumi Furikake? Apparently there are more than a dozen types.

Don you are killing it! You have got this under control and you have the results to show for all your effort and the way you have changed your eating habits is awesome. I'm pretty much with you as I used to eat very bad, especially chocolate and I always blamed it on emotions. But even if I was extremely happy I would still have a chocolate - so it was just habit. Fully agree with it!!

Wow another 80-100 lbs until you are allowed quinoa. Very strict.
I m happy for you though!! You are doing an amazing job, such a champion!

Whats that, a Japanese wedgie? Drum roll please.....(He exits quickly before someone throws a rotten tomato at him)...poof

Why do you think the Japanese bow towards each other? Because if we turned our backs to do it, we'd get a Wasabi Fumi Furikake! (Rim Shot)

Quercus, I have a pickle press (that sounds inappropriate) and it's great, but you can do the same thing by just putting the seasoned veg in a non-reactive bowl or pot, topping it with a plate, then putting a weight on top of it. As far as the flavors of furikake, I like anything with nori, egg, wasabi, fumi, and even the small, dried baby fish. I'm not a huge fan of the shrimp or salmon flavored ones, but that's just me.

Justina, I have to be pretty strict until my weight comes down into a more "normal" overweight range. Until then, I'm going to be very dedicated to staying within certain boundaries.

-------------

OK, today for some weird reason, is another loss day! I'll take it, but I am surprised at this recent run. I'm down 1.0 pounds today to 419.8. That's a total loss since 1/5/13 of 37.2 pounds. In the last 11 days, I've lost weight on 10 of them. The sole holdout day was a 0.5 lb gain five days ago. Again, following my normal patterns, I suspect a shift is coming. I expect a holding/gaining weight period is coming soon. I seem to get 4-6 days of loss followed by a day or three of holding or gaining.

This weekend's goal is to plan ahead, as I'll be on the road again. Healthy snacks, biggest meal earliest in the day, loads of water, and more bike time. Weekends can be tough.

37.2 lbs - thats amazing!! I'm quite jealous. LOL! Excellent work.

Enjoy the weekend and keep good food choices

Your dedication is inspiring!!! You have a great plan for the weekend too!!! You can pull it off!

Don, Congratulations on your decision to get healthier! I lost 33 lbs recently and feel so much better. I am 59 years old, female, and my favorite soapbox is to say that it is about getting healthier, not skinnier. Good for you for all the changes! One thing I do is drink a tsp of Bragg's apple cider vinegar in a cup of water before lunch and before supper. It is suppose to help with blocking fat absorption. Has worked for me real well as well as shaklee 180 that i love. Good luck!

Whats that, a Japanese wedgie?
C'mon Brawny, everyone knows it's the head Samurai from the Seven Samurai. Sort of the Japanese counterpart to Yul Brynner. Wait, was Yul Brynner part Japanese?

What was it we were discussing? Oh yeah, good job on the continued weight loss. 399 is coming sooner than you expected.

8.1% buddy! Nice work! I ordered the wasabi fumi, a small press, and a tsukemono "cookbook". I wanted something to mess around with and everything was cheap.

Also, you can't get wedgies if you don't wear underpants!

Thanks you guys! I am feeling very lucky and a little guilty because of the losses I've been enjoying. I think it just goes to show that weight is easier to shed the more excess weight you have to start. I really do know how hard this process is for everyone... it isn't my first rodeo. In previous attempts, I always hit stages where the weight losses just STOPPED. I was eating right, exercising, etc., but the scale just ceased being my friend. I am sure that will be coming again... maybe soon, too. My hope that things will be different this time, though, is because I am enjoying my new eating and living lifestyle, rather than looking at it as a chore. Because of that, I hope that even when I do stall, I won't "fall off the wagon."

Quercus, let me know how you enjoy the pickle making and the furikake. If eggs and rice are still on your menu, try the "Eggy Rice w/ Furikake" thing I mentioned earlier. It really is delicious.

OK, another great day. Let me preface this by saying I moved my scale to another room with hard, level floors. My scale measurements in the bedroom were just too erratic, swinging a pound between the highest and lowest measurements. I was weighing myself 10 times looking for one number in the middle that got at least 3-4 measurements. In the new room, my weigh-in values were within a half pound and consistent in 4-5 measurements.

That disclaimer out of the way, my weight today is 417.6, down 2.2 pounds. I checked multiple times to be sure, and the scale was consistent. I ate only OK yesterday; too much protein, not enough veg/fruit. Also, I think I was light on calories. I drank water pretty well... probably 3 liters. I did a 21 minute HIIT Bike exercise last night, my longest yet, which burned 175 calories and covered 6 miles. Max heart rate was 144, cruising speed heart rate was 123, and my rest heart rate at start was 68 bpm.

So, there ya go... down 39.4 pounds, or 8.6% of my body weight lost since 1/5/13. Crazy. Thanks again to those of you who pop in to help and offer support. I really do appreciate it.

Down 40 lbs!

Well, today is day 6 of this weight loss run. Six days since my last gain. Today I clocked in at 416.6, which is 40.4 lbs less than I started 43 days ago.

I may celebrate in some way one of these days. Right now I just don't want to do anything differently to try and maintain the streak.

Here are the charts showing my recent weigh-ins, eating schedule, and graphed weight loss. Nothing really special here other than the few days recently where I'm having trouble eating my calories. Yesterday was bad because I was on the road.
