My mom wants to lose about 20 pounds.

My mom has recently started doing some treadmill exercises. I told her that's not enough to burn the weight she wants to burn. Also, I believe that we have very poor diets. Our breakfasts usually consist of eggs everyday, and for dinner we usually eat macaroni. Everytime we go to the supermarket we NEVER know what to buy. Can somebody please recommend a list of healthy foods we can purchase next time we go shopping? Anything to get rid of this terrible food we eat. Also, are there any good ways she can drop 20 pounds? Any specific diet regime's available on the forum? She seems really dedicated and I will try to help her figure out a good diet plan. I also want to start eating healthier but not necessarily to lose weight. Just to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We do eat A LOT of fruit though.

well..To lose weight, you reduce the calories you take it. Look at what you guys eat. Fast foods? Candies and bad foods? There is no magic, just common sense. How about for a week, write down everything you guys eat. That way you can look back and make changes.

Right but what about a diet? What about eating nutritional foods? Thats what I really want to know. What can I go out and buy thats healthy, low in carbs/fat, and will fill me up and be beneficial to my health at the same time? Are there any good diet regime's?

Stop thinking of it as a diet. You are looking at it the wrong way. We could give you a long list of foods but to be honest, no idea what we are working with..only you do. You say you eat a lot of fruit..well fruits are calories and just like anything, you can overeat fruit. The carbs/fat thing being low is diet advertising talk. What you look at is calories. When you buy something, read the label. Learn proper serving sizes. Do you exercise? Do you eat with you are emotional? If you are worried about weight loss, it is a matter of a lifestyle change..not a diet.

I wouldn't add anything to what Jericho has already said. Work out what you (or your mum) is eating, how many calories are in it, and reduce the calories. An easy way to do this is to cut down on processed foods and increase the amount of fresh produce and lean meat in your diet. "Diet plans" don't work- this has to be a lifestyle change or else the weight won't stay off. And similarly, it has to be something that the person on the diet is happy with (and suits their needs/ budget/ circumstances etc), which is why it's not even worthwhile, say, me saying what I do.

You seem to want a formula- there isn't one. Eat less calories than you burn. That's it. (to work out how many calories you burn, find a BMR calculator that accounts for activity, say using the Harris-Benedict formula)

Friend, the reason she has gained weight is because in her lifestyle she was consuming more calories than she burned.

A diet will help you lose weight, but if you don't change the lifestyle then you won't keep the weight off. You'll gain it all back after the diet.

Jericho's advice is sound, you need to change your lifestyle. We can't tell you what foods to eat everyday because we have no idea what foods you have access to provided your area and financial situation. But we can say that you need to watch the calories that you are consuming. Changing your diet is very important to weight loss. Start documenting the calories you are

As well as reducing the calories you take in, burning more is also helpful. So exercising will help your mom lose weight as well. Anything that your mother somewhat enjoys and can get her heart rate to an intense level is appropriate exercise. Jogging is great for almost everyone, it's a great workout, probably the best for losing weight.

Also, don't be disrespectful to those taking the time to give you advice. It is doesn't help your cause.

Jericho is right. It boils down simply to calories. The best way to do it is to figure out what your BMR (basal metabolic rate) is, appproximately, and eat about 500 calories less than that. The BMR is basically how many calories you burn. Take into consideration how active you are. If you eat less calories than you burn, you will lose weight.

The trick would be, if you are worried about nutrition, is to make sure that the calories you are eating come from "good" sources. Avoid sugar, bad fats (trans and saturated). The other kinds of fats are good and needed, so are carbs. Look for high fibre and high protein. If you cut out useless calories (sugar is the number one example of this), you will get the best bang for your buck, calorie-wise. And just keepp your calories about 500 less than you burn (never going below 1200 per day for an adult woman).

Jericho knows what he is talking about. What you are looking for seems to be quick fixes and magic answers, which won't keep the weight off for good. You're looking for what the media tells you that you should be looking for (low carbs/fat), and if you come looking for help, don't shoot it down so quickly. :)

the only way to loose weight is to diet and workout some diets are better then other really depends on the time she has to prepare the food and the budget she is on. keep in touch !

What diet you pick depends on your lifestyle. If you have plenty of free time then you should concentrate on eating a balanced diet and cutting out the junk food. Weight Watchers offers plenty of training and group support.

If you have no free time and money is not a problem then you might want to try something live Nutrisystem where they send you prepared meals.

If you need to lose weight around the middle then you might consider a South beach diet where you limit your carbohydrates.

The bottom line is your diet has to make sense considering your lifestyle. If you are motivated any diet will work as long as your lifestyle doesn't fight against it.

The format for losing weight is really as simple as anything we learned in second grade math class. Weight Loss = Calories Consumed - Calories Burned. If you create a deficit you will lose weight. Whether your lose muscle, fat, combination, etc depends on the ratios of what you are putting in your body (Protein/Fat/Carbs). To lose 1 lb of fat, you must create a 3500 calorie deficit over the course of the week.

As for effective workouts, I'd look into some of the Beachbody programs. I've seen tons of people, from all age groups, have extremely high success with some of their at-home workouts. You do need to be cautious, because some of them are not as effective for fat loss as others. (removed)

I'm happy to help, as I recently had a lot of success in my own weight loss journey. I'm very interested in helping others achieve the same results, as I tried for years to figure it out and have just now, over the last few months, seen success. (removed)

Cheers & good luck!
