My first day here....

So I'm a newbie to this site. I found it when searching for weight loss success stories so I would have an added motivator when it gets tough. This site is just what anyone going through the weight loss struggle needs for support. Thanks to all of you who keep posting and sending your pics, telling your stories and giving helpful hints to the rest of us.

So here's the info on me. At the moment I don't want to state my beginning weight- maybe a little later on as I get further along in reaching my goals. For now I'll say this- I'm 5' 6" and need to lose about 100 pounds. The funny thing is that by looking at me, you wouldn't think I weigh as much as I do- I can thank years of working summers on construction sites with my father's company for giving me some great muscles (also being the only female on a jobsite all the time had soem ego booster benefits in my teen/college years!). However, once I actually started my career in science and stopped spending summers on the jobsites, I was no longer to eat and burn calories the wya I did before- too bad it took me this long to figure that out...

Anyway, I started my "diet" on June 22nd. I have lost 16 pounds so far and am feeling better and more energetic each day.
I started by cutting calories and keeping a food journal- wow is that a lifesaving tool! I incorporated lots of healthy, low calorie foods in with my "normal" eating and replaced a lot of the food I like with low calorie alternatives. I've also discovered some great snack tips and ways to keep from falling asleep- I was drinking 2-3 cokes a day and that's a lot of caffeine to give up. Green tea has been wonderful for the caffeine boost. Last week I started working out and oddly enough, I've become addicted already, to the point that I feel guilty if I miss a day. I've started off light, going every morning on my way to work and doing 30-40 minutes of cardio. I also do some toning exercises at home with light weights about 2-3 week. I really feel like I'm on the right track and I wish this new attitude about my life and health had come on sooner. It was like a light bulb went off and the whole idea of dieting suddenly made sense. For all of you out there who don't tihnk you can do this- believe me, you can. Start simple by giving yourself enough time to adjust to each new change before you add another one... little by little, every pound lost counts. I remind myself every day that I did not gain this weight overnight or in 6 months, so how can I expect to lose it all in such a short period of time... and tell everyone you know what you're doing- the more people you tell, the harder it is to get off track because it gives you a sense ofp urpose having all those people rooting for you- my coworkers have been phenomenal!
I will start posting pics of my weight loss progression each month for all to see but most importantly as a reminder and a motivator for myself. Until then, thanks to all of you for keeping this site going! 16 pounds and counting!!!!

Welcome! You seem to know your goals and how to get there. Congrats on the 16 lbs! Thats a alot! You will find all the motivation and support you need here... I look forward to reading your diary and getting to know you better!

Cheers,
MissD

thanks :)

Thank you both for the added encouragement. I feel like I'm well on my way, but it's all just so amazing to me how easy it is to stay focused once I made that first step and got off my butt to do something about my weight... for me the first thing I had to do was get rid of the idea that losing weight meant eating like a rabbit. I still get to eat food I love, just smaller portions or lower calorie versions of it (that taste just as great), and the pay off is worth it- Just 16 pounds and I already feel healthier and happier- for an already upbeat person, my extra peppiness these days is making my coworkers laugh- it's like giving the energizer bunny a nitro injection! But I love it, and I just continue to take it day by day.

OMG I have many of the same obstacles such as the soda thing and the same amount of weight to lose. You are an inspiration! Keep up the good work. I am SO OVERWHELMED!!

31yearoldmom- you can do it... if I could finally get around to taking control, so can you. Having kids can make it a bit more challenging, but it might help to buy whatever snacks you keep around the house for them in a lower calorie alternative.. remember to take it day by day and remember that every little change helps- it all makes a difference in the end! I have more good news to share so that you know it really is possible.. I've lost another 2 pounds since Monday and I took all my measurements and since last week I've lost an inch off both arms, both thighs, calves, hips & bust and 2 inches off my waist... I'm so excited to finally be doing the right thing for my health- a tip on the coke.. if you absolutely can't give it up, try coke zero- it tastes pretty close to the real deal... good luck!! keep me posted on your progress! :)

I'm new as well and I think what you're doing so far is really great. Keep it up and best wishes on your success :)

You really are off to a great start. Good on you!

Sodas are not that big of a problem for me. I'm not even much of a coffee drinker. My problem is Mexican food (we have a take out place that is awesome in a baaaaaad, bad way) and beer. Of course I can't do beer much anyway because I work all the dang time, but still, when I do, it's empty extra calories.

About the only exercise I like is walking. Light jogging when I feel motivated. And that works for me, when I'm consistent. But summers here are brutal and that treadmill is sooooo boring. I'm trying though. Good music helps.

Throwing lots of success vibes your way!

Colleen

lucky..

yeah- the treadmill is a complete bore but luckily at my gym each one has its own tv, so even when I'm there at 5am before work there's something for me to watch- unfortunately the screen that tells me how many minutes I have is right in the line of sight with the tv so that can be annoying to stay focused when you're counting every second! Walking is great though- keep that up. If you decide to pick up the pace and walk at a good rate for 20 minutes, that's just as good as being on a treadmill, but with much more exciting scenery. Thanks for the good vibes and good luck to everyone on here and I hope you all reach your goals.. I'm excited to start posting pics soon to share my progress with you all.. Monday marks 1 month for me.. if I reach 20 pounds lost, I'll send a comparison photo and you can all let me know if you see a change.. thanks again!

this morning I hit my first goal- and passed it by a pound.. I've lost 21!!!! My first goal was to lose 20 pounds in the first month. The best part is, Monday makes the 1 month anniversary, so maybe it'll be 22 pounds by then??? :)

100 pounds, me too!

Hi,

Wow, you're doing great! :hurray:

I'm 5' 7", lost 100 pounds 13 years ago and have kept it off ever since. You can do it! Keep up the good work! :coolgleamA:

thank you so much for that- it's encouraging getting support from someone who's already been there and able to keep it off- good for you!!!
