So im 6ft2 and weight 290 pounds, Ive gotten fed up with being overweight so i decided to start doing something about it!

So Ive been dieting for 7 days now, eating usualy nothing for breakfast (cant eat in the morning for some reason) a sandwhich with hardly any butter on it with some ham for lunch and a salad for dinner with chicken in it and usualy a couple peices of fruit with it. If I feel a bit peckish during the day i usualy eat these low fat chips (0.2g of fat per bag) or some fruit.

After work (I finish at 10pm) I go jogging for 30-50mins usualy jogging for 20mins then walking for 5 to catch my breath then carrying on. Im getting some weights for xmas so i can start jogging with them too.

The first 3 days of doing this i lost 7 pounds! but 4 days after ive not lost anything else so i was wondering if anyone knew why, had any suggestions for me to lose more weight or can see any problems with what im doing.

Thanks alot i nadvance and I will be updating my diary everyday with what ive eaten, how much ive excerised and hopefuly how much weight ive lost! :)

Based on what you said you are eating, you are cutting your calories WAY too much. Take some time to read some of the forum stickies. It seems kinda like you are eating maybe 1000 calories if that. This is not safe weight loss my friend.

A lack of breakfast sets you in bad stead for the rest of the day, I've found in the past. I've still achieved positive results and feel better and less hungry throughout the day having had even just a slice of toast for breakfast- would definitely suggest you try to incorporate *something* into your daily routine in the AM, it'll kick your metabolism off and help you to get through the long term.

Good luck eitherway!

Slow and steady wins the race.

Surely losing 7lbs in 3 days sounds great, but it is very unhealthy. Imagine putting 7lbs ON in 3 days. It's fairly similar.

Thanks for the responces guys!

Im not hungry at all In the morning, and dont get hungry till around lunch time so i cant bring myself to eat, it makes me feel a bit sick realy.

Are there not any calories in fruits and vegtables? im eating quite alot of fruit with my dinner/lunch so i dont end up feeling hungry inbetween meals. I dont feel bad at all, so what negative effects does not having enough calories do to a person?

Diary for today:

Got up about 8:30am, didnt eat anything till 12.45pm, I had 1 sandwhich made with brown bread, a bit of butter and a few slices of ham. I also ate 1 banana and a plum with my lunch. At work I forgot to bring my dinner in which is a chicken salad so i bought a chicken salad sandwhich and a banana from the work's canteen. I got home for about 10.30pm and was hungry so I ate my salad which I forgot to bring into work, I was going to go jogging but I had an accident at work and dropped something heavy on my foot so Im giving it a miss today which i dont feel to good about.

Oh and for anyone wondering, I drive a fork lift truck for my job, not the most physical jobs I know but I do have to get on and off it quite regulary to lift a bunch of stock onto pallets.

Thanks again for the input and advice.

*Edit*
I couldnt stand it just sitting about, I had to go jogging for 40mins as I felt bad about giving it a miss.

Breakfast used to make me feel sick. It's something I slowly got used to as I knew it was very important.

Maybe try having a little something after a couple of hours of being awake and then slowly creep it more towards when you get up and increase the portion.

Don't feel too bad about breakfast. I'm pretty much the same way as in I feel sick when I try to eat something in the morning. But as Cantona suggested, it's best to force down something relatively small (I started with a banana, a granola bar, or yogurt) and work your way up. I'm not gonna lie, I still don't eat much for breakfast but since I've already acquired decent portion control I don't need it as much to keep my hunger in check for the rest of the day.

You seem to be off to a great start, but as Jericho mention, be careful with restricting to much as this can ultimately backfire. Sorry to hear about your foot xD

Lol thanks, my foot isnt to bad now :) Could you explain possibly how it could backfire then? this is something i dont understand yet.

It can backfire because in life, eating too few calories is just as bad as eating too many.

Where to begin?

If you keep doing it for long periods your body will eventually begin to breakdown your own muscles. You could probably get away with doing it for short periods of time, but not consistently.

I would say eating 1,200 as a minimum isn't even that healthy so to be at less than that is dangerous. 1,200 is the MINIMUM a WOMAN would need to simply maintain life. And that is with the level of activity of sitting down all day and never moving.

If you're exercising AS WELL, you're making it much worse. Undereating and exercising excessively isn't what is required. You either need to undereat (abit) and exercise very moderately or eat normally and exercise a lot. That way you get the deficit right.

If you keep doing it? Exhaustion, malnourishment, blackouts and eventually will probably lead to you binging on food as your body craves it.

After you have kept up this diet for a long period of time, your body will have burned off most of the fat. Then your body begins to breakdown your own muscles. It's worth pointing out the most obvious muscle in your body is your heart. Breaking down your heart is obviously disasterous.

Ah right, thanks for the advice then, I feel fine as it is now but i better change it up then if what you say is true. So if im not eating enough calories as it is now, do i have to start eating more healthy food or just the same amount but with less healthy things included to bring the calories up?

Diary for today :

Got up later then usual (11:30am) ate lunch around 12.45pm, I had a pot of chopped fruit, a banana, a special K bar and a small slice of cheese, next time i ate was dinner time (6:30pm) i had my usual chicken and ham salad with a low fat caeser dressing, a banana, and a 0% fat yoghurt. When i got in from work i was feeling a bit peckish so i ate another special K bar and a handfull of peanuts.

I would of thought all that would of been sufficient calories for a day for someone trying to lose weight :)

Thanks again for your input and advice guys! means alot to me.

I have no idea if it is or not, go on a website and find out.

There's a few out there where you can add up all your calories for food. See what your total is.

hmm just over 1000 calories is what its saying for my average day which is half of what it recommends me taking, so i guess i need to eat more? or just eat things with more calories?

Hey buddy, I ran your numbers through a calculator and here are the results.

Maintenance:
3175 Calories/day
Fat Loss:
2540 Calories/day
Extreme Fat Loss:
1920 Calories/day

According to your profile, you are 20. You stated here you are 6'2 and 240. And I put in you exercise five days a week.

You should be eating the fat loss cals to lose weight, but I think the extreme fat loss cals is doable in your case. You should not go below those amounts. You should focus on eating dense foods that are low calories to meet this requirement :)

I think you should eat more often (less calories each time) to meet this, but its up to you. Oh yeah, and you might wanna try fitday to help you keep track of your calories.

Hey Daybehavior thanks alot for that, the calorie counter i was using suggested 2200 calories a day so around 2000 will be a good amount i guess.

What sort of dense foods do you suggest then? eating frequently wont be so easy as i have to work 8 to 12 hours a day and were only allowed one 30min break so 3 meals a day will be the only way.

Thanks alot Daybehavior for that i realy appreciate it :D

No problem, us fellas gotta stick together. We're outnumbered here ;) haha j/k girls, we're all here to help each other out. Sad fact is I see people ask question, get great responses and they NEVER show up again. It's good you're being persistent and inquisitive. I think visiting this site daily really helps people get into the right mindset and motivates them to continue (for me at least)

Anyway, some low calories dense foods that will keep you full are things like apples, potatoes (careful with the add-ons), healthy soups (not creamed, and watch the sodium content), and of course salads, which you seem to enjoy anyway.

I'm sure Cantona can add some more since he has already lost 120 lbs and knows whats he doing. I'm still in the learning process.

great suggestions, my sodium levels were way to high according to calorie count, 2700mg it came up with, im so confused as what to do lol, need more calories but my sodium is already way to high!

Diary for Sunday:

Got up around 10.30am, ate my lunch at 1.30pm, had a brown bread sandwich with low fat ham and some butter and a special K bar. Went out bowling with a bunch of friends at 4pm, didnt eat anything at the bowling place but i had a glass of diet pepsi while there. we then proceeded to hit the best curry house in town where i had 1 poppadom with the various sauces they bring you, then for the main course i had a chicken tikka masala with pilau rice and a naan bread (bad i know XD) and another diet pepsi.

Calories for today - around 1300
Once again, sodium levels way to high - 2700mg again, whats giving me all this sodium?

Total weight loss for this week - 9 pounds and a half which im pleased with, just hoping i can keep up a similar amount every week.

Thanks in advance for your advice and support!

Dairy for Monday:

woke up at 11am, ate lunch at 1.30pm, I had 1 and a half chicken salad sandwich, 1 babybel cheese and a pack of low fat crisps. Dinner time i didnt feel like making anything so i ate 1 whole mango, an apple, 2 bananas and another babybel cheese.

Calories for today 1266
my sodium was at 1,254 mg which is alot better then what it had been but im still not sure what it was that i was eating that caused such high sodium levels. All my other nutrients are too low except for sat.fat, cholestarol and vitamin C which were all good.

Going out at midnight to pick up the new Call of Duty game :D cant wait to play it!
