Right, here goes. . .

I'm 18 years old, roughly 5ft 10 and I weigh. . . around 251 lbs. The last month or so I've been watching what I eat, not strictly dieting, but definately cutting out, or down on the high calorie crap, and reducing the size of my portions.

I've recently joined the gym, havn't really got into a routine yet though. Whats the best time of day to go to the gym, before (6am) or after work (8pm ish). Also, what do you guys eat before the gym?

Anyway, I'm going to record the normal stuff in here along my journey.

Have seen some brilliant achievments on here, and I aim to acheive similar, and use the motivation from others, and hopefully pass this motivation on.

Wish me luck!

Hey MrJ,
welcome! I am glad you have decided to change your lifestyle to a more healthy one and you will see that it will nto only change your figure, but your moods will improve and you will feel all around better!

About the gym, well it really depends on you. If you are one of those people who fall out of bed early anyhow, then go early, if you hate waking up earlier than necessary, go after work. It has to fit in with YOUR life. For example for me, while I studied I went whenever I had time, midday, before class, after class... now I am working mornings and I go (if I go... ;)) in the evenings.
The important point being, you want to be able to do this "for life", not just for today or this month, so you have to find a way that feels good. You don't have to go daily if you don't fancy going daily, just make sure you do exercise some. Some people on here do not go to the gym, they just go for long walks every day, some do workout videos at home, some play dance dance revolution, some work out daily, some work out once a week but changed other habits (such as walking stairs instead of elevators), soem take classes, some have trainers, some work by themselves.
You have got to find your way, and I am sure you will!

The same goes for food, everybody has a different approach although most of us count calories to some extent (weight watcher points are calories too in a way). Make sure you have a balanced diet and you will do fine!

Have a wonderful week, I will come and check up on you every now and then, Camy

Well I've been going to the gym whenever me and my girlfriend arn't doing anything, which, to be perfectly honest, isn't often. Its only a small gym so if we go straight from work, which would be best, it is very busy down there and its kinda cramped.

I hate getting out of bed whatever time of day it is, I just love bein warm and... in bed lol! But I do get up whenever I have to, whatever the time. I think I'm going to start going before work, but what should I eat/drink before I go. I dont really want to have a full breakfast before I go otherwise I'll make myself puke (thats right isnt it)

At the moment my usual breakfast is a bowl of cereal, usually corn flakes, with some semi-skimmed milk, and a coffee with a teaspoon of sweetener.

Lunch would be a sandwich on wholemeal bread (normally chicken or ham, lettuce, cucumber and a little dribble of light mayonnaise), a few bits of fruit (eg an apple, a bannana and a few grapes), a low fat yogurt and some low fat crispy slices.

If we're due to have a late dinner, I may have some toast (again, wholemeal bread) when I get in from work.

And finally dinner, have been cutting down on the amount fatty, high calorie meals, and eating what we think are healthier options.

An example of a dinner is, what we're having tonight, roast chicken breast with a light covering of pesto, roasted vegetables, and either rice or a jacket potato.

I normally drink about 3 coffees throughout the day, including the one with breakfast, and sometimes a cup of tea in the evening.

I rarely drink alcohol, avoid sugary things, dont drink fizzy drinks, normally water, or pure squeezed orange juice (used to drink a few litres a day).

Im really annoyed with myself. I'm going away next week so we've been so busy sorting things out, getting the last few bits, so I havnt been getting to bed until late which means Im way too tired to get up at 5.30 and go to the gym. Just feel like im letting myself down

the old "going to the gym" excuse :) On days like that, I like to do some body weight exercises at home. you can do it without getting dressed, getting ready, or driving to the gym. Its exercise, and its better than doing nothing. give it a shot

Oh my god I've been so busy lately. Going away the day after tomorrow, cant wait! Going to be swimming loooaaaads every day out there (Spain). Then when we get back I'm going to get back into the gym routine.

So... today I've eaten:

Breakfast: bowl of corn flakes, coffee with semiskimmed milk and 1 sweetener
Lunch: Ham and light mayonnaise sandwich on wholemeal bread, a banana, 2 salt&vinegar snack-a-jacks, a handful of dried apricots and dried apple slices. Also another coffee with a sweetener.
Dinner: Think we're having shepherds pie tonight!

Also had a pint of orange squash (weak)

Cant wait for holiday!!!!

Exercise plan for next couple of days is:
Tomorrow: Go to they gym in the evening or go for a walk in the morning.
Thursday: Go to the gym in the morning, go to Spain in the afternoon :D
Then up to and including 30th May I'll be swimming loads!

Wow its been a while since I've been on here!

An awful lot has changed in that time, I split up with my ex girlfriend who I was living with, and am now living back with my parents. And my life has improved in every aspect!

As for my weight, I'm now 236lbs, and havnt really been trying with the weight loss. I've been keeping an eye on what I eat, but not as much as I should to be honest. But I've bought myself a new bike, so thats my exercise tool! I got it a couple of months ago, but kept making excuses not to use it (idiot). But a real inspiration for me to set my mind back on loosing the weight, is my new girlfriend. She's lost over 3 stone, and is looking brilliant! And its just given me a kick up the backside to sort myself out!

So since my last postings, I've lost 15lbs, not a great deal, but not bad considering I havnt really been trying I think.

My plan now, is to ride my bike 3 evenings during the week, just around the local area, I've got a route planned, drove around it in my car and clocked it a 5.5 miles. I think thats enough to start off with, what do you guys think? I have to admit I'm not fit, at all! So I dont want to over do it. So yeah, 3 nights during the week doing that, and then either saturday or sunday, go for a ride somewhere different, whether it be a coastal route, or a forest, or whatever takes my fancy! Another thing that is encouraging me is that my girlfriend will come with me on her bike, so I will have some moral support from someone close to me, as well as you guys here, and from someone who is also wanting to get in shape and shed a few pounds!

And as for eating, I personally dont like counting calories, it stresses me out working everything out, so I'm going to keep on doing what I've been doing (its obviously working), and start the exercise routine, and hopefully the pounds will be falling off!

One thing I found amazing, is that although over Christmas, I ate enough to feed a nation for a month (I know, my bad!), I actually lost weight . How does that one work?

Wow, its 2:25am! I didnt realize it was this late! I'm up doing college work which I've left till the last minute, which is due in tomorrow! Hmmm I had better get on with that!

So... here we go!.............
