Military Press

Okay, I do Military press with dumbbells but it kills my shoulders to a point where it isn't helping. I was just wondering if there is a good exercise out there that would be good to replace it with?

To my knowledge, if you dislocate your shoulder then don't have it put back in place professionally, then it can pop out again much easier. Does this happen?

I think it definitaley plays a part. If MPs are popping your shoulders out, then it's a result of dislocating your shoulders.

It was my Iaido teacher that popped them back in. So is there another exercise to replace it with?

umm.. lol, I'm pretty sure that you should have your doctor put it back in, I think they do it a way in which it's much, much harder to pop back out. I've never had a shoulder dislocated, so I'm not sure what would work and what wouldn't. Sry man.

Thats all right dude, I've just been looking at some shoulder stuff on a site and i saw shrugs, i tried them and they don't seem to hurt, would they be a good substitute?

Shrugs hit the back of the shoulders more, I can dislocate my shoulders at will and at first they would not stay in place, but as I kept doing presses, my muscles were able to control the dislocation and it doesn't happen anymore.

whenever you are not confterble doing a shoulder excersise dont do it.. look for substitues try doing military press with a barbell i have the same problem with lateral raises. i feel my shoulder pop every time i do them. dont do it. you need your shoulders :p look for some alternatives. grip the barbell in diferent positions to find a comfy spot.

good luck.

just an fyi, having a doctor or 'qualified' person pop it back in just ensures that no further damage is caused by doing so, the whole mel gibson 'slam it against a wall' routine might work but its not good for you.

i had 2 shoulder surgeries in high school on the same shoulder because of chronic dislocations and the 2nd was because i came back too soon after the first surgery. take your time and do some rehab with rubber bands and try to improve the underlying muscles before you go and do something like military press. if you dont you're just asking for trouble, ask me and my 3 inch scar. :)

take your time and everything will be fine, it took me a few years to get back to where i can actually trust my shoulder.

Your Iado teacher shouldnt' have done that unless he's got some serious training with shoulder injuries. But what's done is done. How long ago did you dislocate them? Does it hurt to do any shoulder movement with no weight?

The best thing to do would be to have a doctor take a look at it and what's going on in there. You could have some liasons (which can be permanent) or torn your rotator cuff among other things. The other thing that sucks is shoulder injuries are usually slow to heal.

But if you dont want to see a doctor, I'd try doing overhead presses isometrically at first. Pick 3 or 4 evenly spaced angles and do isometric holds. From there you can move to bands or dumbbells with a light weight that you could do like 15-20 times (hey, rehab sucks). The key is there should be little to no pain while doing the exercise. Otherwise youre not ready for it. You should also do some exercises for internal and external rotation. Thats a must. There are some other exercises you can do that would help - like lateral raise variations or taking a racketball and writing your name on a wall with it while pushing against it with your weight. Doing the shrugs is a good idea but it wont really work your delts. Shrugs primarily work the traps. But you'll have to stay away from overhead presses with any significant weight for a while because the nature of the movement is very unstable for the shoulder joint.

it was 4 years ago and my Iaido teacher is "qualified" to do what he did. it doesn't hurt when doing anything else apart from military press, thats the only exercise that makes my shoulders hurt.

My shoulder popped out while doing my 3 rep max last year. Doesnt hurt too bad but it still is very uncomfortable and messes u up. I've never dislocated my shoulder before so im gunna say it's his form. I bet hes trying to be too explosive and bang out reps fast. Try controlled slow reps, and then tell us if ur shoulders pops out.

Shrugs will work the trapezius, not the deltoids. If MP'ing is the ONLY shoulder exercise that hurts, then don't do them. Although pressing is the meat of any shoulder workout, you might be able to see gains with some sort of raise, be it laterl, front, or otherwise.

It's too late and what's done is done, but bear in mind, you don't know what's entirely wrong with you. You could be benching one day and lose it. Get it checked out.

You should get it checked out. Diagnosing it over the net isn't really possible so if you really want to do the best thing, that's what you should do. It could be stretched tissue and resulting instability that's causing the pain or a liasion and those things can usually be fixed if you have them diagnosed and seek proper treatment. But again, if you don't want to do that, since it was 4 years ago I would do the same as I suggested in my last post. It sucks you have to go that route but it'll be better in the long run if the shoulder is healthy now. That way when you're freakishly strong you can have healthy shoulders too. :)
