Milestones (Amy's diary)

I'm a pretty picky eater, so I can't even imagine brain being served. I don't blame you for not wanting to eat it. lol! Just dropping by to say hi! :)

..., when the rest of the carcass is just thrown aside.

car·cass /ˈkärkəs/ 1. the dead body of an animal.

pretty sure when they are thrown back into the water, they aren't a carcass ... yet. this is one of the most despicable fishing practices all for the deranged Asian tradition associated with shark fin soup and other perverted myths regarding health and vitality properties.

I’m not vegetarian either I do eat beef pork and chicken turkey and fish . I try to always get from our very trusted butcher or fish monger . I can’t eat lamb or veal. We have adopted whales and dolphins and support protected species but I’m not sure after reading all this am I doing enough ? sorry Amy you got hijacked again !

sorry Amy you got hijacked again !
That's not hijacking, that's discussing! :)
What you truly point out, Flyer and LaMa, is a horrible, horrible practice, boosted by idiot beliefs about what enhances male sexual prowess (see also tiger bones and I don't know what-all). Even if it did have that effect, it wouldn't be worth inflicting so much suffering. (To be fair, I'm pretty sure that in older days, the whole of the shark would have been eaten, not just the fins - another curse of modern "prosperity".)
Hi, Jen! :)

Thanks, LaMa, for the input re sugar. I'm still trying to get a handle on insulin and how it works, hence I looked at the video - I thought I'd try going sugar-free to see if I could notice any difference in how my body worked - and maybe also as part of the buffer-zone plan for Christmas.

Let me know how the sugar experiment goes Amy. I might follow your lead if you don't get eaten by the angry sugar withdrawal monsters. :p

Hi, Amy. I think cutting down on added sugar is a good idea & I have been doing the same. I'm also cutting right down on meat & feel much better for it.

... don't get eaten by the angry sugar withdrawal monsters.
The sugar withdrawal monsters did indeed begin making ominous snarling sounds about half-way through the second day (ie today). I fobbed them off with mandarins, and also dealt with some cake which was loitering ominously nearby, by shoving it pell-mell into the freezer, where it couldn't make trouble. The only processed food I've had has been soysauce, and I've just checked the label - no sugar!

On the other hand, I've eaten pretty substantially today - fried rice for lunch, with added cashews. But tea's going to be broccoli and cauliflower, so maybe my weight won't go up.

That's great, about feeling the better for it, Cate. How long have you been at it? I can't say I'm feeling much the better for the non-sugar yet - but a day and a half doesn't amount to much, I guess. I do hope I can make it for a month!

Drinking plenty of water after a high-sodium lunch like that may help you on the scales. What are you having with your cruciferous veggies?

For tea? Either nothing, or a bit of fetta.
Thanks for the tip about water - I'll down some right this minute!

(I could have an egg, but that would mean two in the day.)

I think some feta with your veg sounds nice Amy . From what you are eating I imagine you will be in the 160s in no time never mind a couple of lbs . I tried going no sugar once but I like certain foods and find them hard to give up so I just try to watch the levels .
Well done on putting cake in freezer

For only about 2 weeks, Amy. :blush5: I just read your post while eating my 1st square of 4 squares of chocolate. I have an orange cut up to eat as soon as I eat the chocolate & I will not have any more, but I really, really wanted that chocolate. It's the last of it, thank goodness!

Having that bit of feta with your veggies would make it more of a meal. Some extra protein, and fat to dissolve vitamins in.

I think I'm going to be in the 170s for a good while yet! I haven't really found my way to ingrained maintenance eating yet - it's more like a really inept balancing act, where I wobble one side (last weekend, making myself a cake-and-icecream-and-frozen-strawberry sundae) and then frantically wobble the other way (this week, having meals of just broccoli and cauliflower, plain). Thanks for the kind words re the freezer exile of the cake. :)

Well, that puts you nearly two weeks up on me! Chocolate and orange are a great flavour combination. :) Do you mean that's the last of the chocolate in the house? Or have you sworn off for a set time, like till Christmas? I'm only off for a month (if I make it that far).

It was your question about what I was going to have with them that prompted me to add the fetta! :) Until then I was just going to have them plain. I got about five grams extra protein, going by the packet's labelling. I didn't know fat was required to make vitamins accessible - does that have to be in the same meal?

Meanwhile... I'm still holding the line, and still healing up from the burn - I look like a lizard-woman now, moulting. (Or can only birds moult?) Today's challenge, in terms of diet, will be visiting a friend and ensuring we don't eat anything sweet over our cup of tea - I think I'll take her a bag of mandarins, and we can eat them instead. :)

Lizards shed, I think. Like snakes, only their skins come off in shreds rather than one perfect piece.
Some vitamins can dissolve only in fat, not in water, so if you don't have any fat around the time you eat them they can pass right through you. I needn't be much though.

Good for you for trying sugar-free! I've done that a couple of times and find the first few days the hardest as the body adjusts. After that i found it easier. My problem is as soon as I start back on sugar, I go back to my habit of over-doing it! I always think its good to take a break from our habits though even if its just to see that we can!

How did you go at your friend's, Amy? Is your skin a bit better today?
The visit went well - I cleverly took a gift of fruit, so that I wouldn't feel socially obliged to eat biscuits if they were put in front of me, but as it turned out she had some totally unknown herbal tea she was drinking, and offered me that, and no biscuits in evidence at all! So that was good. :) I'm shedding (see below) at a great rate, with new skin underneath, and no infection, so all is well on that front! :)

:D I don't think my husband could quite take the shock if I moulted in one perfect piece, so I guess it's a good thing that I'm saurian rather than serpentine!

Me too, I think, but as you say, the break will probably do me good, let alone helping with the pre-Christmas safety net.
good Luck Amy it sounds to be like you are doing this balancing act really well .
I managed yesterday, anyway, which makes three days (does it? Or have I lost count?). I had roasted sweet potato for tea last night, and it seemed astonishingly sweet! (and fetta! for the protein boost).

Roasted sweet potato is almost artificially sweet. And it goes great with the tangy saltiness of feta. Adding some greens and blueberries is great as well.
