I have heard a bit about them, but I really don't know much. If anyone has had any experiance with them I would love some information...
WHat are good brands that work? and taste good? and are cheap?
HOw often do you use them? all the time or for only one meal?
Do they fill you up?

Just wondering... any help would be appreciated! Thanks :)

Hi there,
I am of the opinion that it's better to eat real, nutritious food than use meal replacements. But, I know that's pretty hard sometimes. A good choice would be a scoop of whey perotein powder with frozen fruit mixed in a blender. Sometimes you have to try several whey powders before you find one that tastes good, but there are good ones out there. Hope that helps!

I've tried slim fast and a few other brands - and the taste isn't great... but yeah they do work - not because of hte shake but because you are getting fewer calories and that's why they work... but personally i hate them because well - i like food.. i like chewing and the texture and the taste and drinking some chocolately drink doesn't do it for me... Did they fill me up? eh - not really because part of me getting filled up is that mindset that I ate something - if I just drink it - well - doesnt' work.. I didn't eat.

For the same number of calories I can have a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and a huge bowl of cantaloupe... I'd much rather have the fruit...

Shakes

Hi,

My uncle is in a wheelchair and he has gone on a diet using meal-replacement shakes. The company he used was Energy 4 Health, and in he told me that the meal-replacement shakes were excellent, and came in 5 different flavours of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cappuccino and tropical fruits. The difference between these and other meal replacement shakes, is that they are healthy with many vitamins and minerals to aid weight-loss. I can't tell you much more about it, but they offer a free consultation, if you visit their website on energy-4-health.biz.

Good luck with your weightloss.

I know a whey protein powder, contact energy-4-health.biz for a tasteless whey protein powder.

I don't think they are overly bad except I have never found any the fill me up like real food does. I'm always hungry an hour after I drink it.

I'm doing Isagenix - you replace 2 meals a day with protein shakes - I drink them for Breakfast and Lunch. I love the program. I'm never hungry, which is something that has never happened with any other diet I've done. The shakes keep you full, so you don't sit around thinking about food all day - and as a result, I'm not snacking during the day like I used to. I also feel better than I did before I started the program.

I use meal replacement shakes often. The ones I use taste like a Wendy's frosty when blended with ice. They are veryyyyyy filling, sometimes I even felt stuffed after drinking them, so I had to alter the amount that I used.

Meal replacement shakes can be very healthy depending on their ingredients, probably more healthy than eating the healthiest of food. I won't say what kind I use, because I just joined and don't want to sound like I am prompting anything.

When I was doing Body For Life, I had a meal replacement shake for one of my 5 meals. Myoplex was the brand. It did help because it kept me from being hungry and eating something I shouldn't. Although they are convient, even the Body for Life people said, if you can eat food it is always better.

I sometimes drink them for breakfast. Before I started trying to loose weight I used to skip breakfast and it is still hard to get used to eating something in the morning. I thought that drinking the shake was better than nothing. I also use the myoplex ones - there not bad and have a ton of protein.

I know that this is somtimes unrealistic based on location and money, but I stayed very healthy when I worked at Jamba Juice. They really do have healthy smoothies (if you get the all fruit smoothies). They taste good and you can get your fiber, protein and vitamins all in one drink. They fill me up but like people have already suggested its a case by case thing. If you do use Jamba Juice watch out for anything that has frozen yogurt or ice cream in it because those are too many calories (in my opinion). Some of the smoothies in the medium size can be over 1000 cals because the amount of ice cream or fro yo in them. The all fruit smoothies usually have an apple juice or orange juice base which lowers the calories but still gives you enough for a meal replacement.

I think meal replacement drinks are great for dieting. Most brands are usually healthy, but stay away from ones with too much sugar by reading the Nutrition Label.

Some key points:

Fixed meal size - helps weight loss because it controls how much you eat per meal. Shakes also give you the specific number of calories (nutrition label) and a specific serving size to stick to. Easier to follow. Frozen dinners also help in this.

Convenience

Dealing with hunger - you may get hungry because the shakes digest more quickly because it's a fluid. You can eat vegetables or salad to help fill up your stomach.

You should read the label on Slim Fast.....loads of sugar and since our bodies burn sugar before they burn fat, you will be getting no where fast:(

The Atkins meal replacement drinks are yummy and filling :)
and only 160 calories!
but they do take some getting used to.

the slimfast shakes are really good too, but they never really felt like a meal as much as a treat.

I read a recipe for a protein shake, you could lose a pound a day it said. one in the morn, one in the afternoon. When I added up the calories, yeah no wonder, it was about 300 calories a shake. I would have had to have a huge dinner and several snacks to make my up my caloric needs. Ridiculous. On occasion I get slim fast shakes because i don't like to eat right when I get up, it's better to have something than nothing. But to replace two or three meals I think is counter productive in the long run.

I've tried them, they haven't really worked well for me, plus I got more bang for my buck by eating the real foods.

I think it's important to get used to eating properly at meals so you know what you're doing, unless you plan to use the meal replacement forever.

I know that for slim-fast, it's suppose to be a meal replacement, but if you look on the back of the case for them, it gives you meal suggestions. Most of them say to drink a shake and eat a piece of fruit, or half a sandwhich. So, how is that a meal replacement if you have to eat with it? Hmmm...
