making a fat bar

i looked one up and its 500 dollars...so i need to find a way tomake a fat 2" or 3" bar with limited $$(50$)!!!

any ideas?

i want to be able to convert my 7' olympic bar into a 2 or 3" fat bar whenever i want and then back...ideas?

It might be more cost effective to buy a cheap exercise bar and a piece of 2" and/or 3" pipe to slide over it? The other option is to wrap something around your olympic bar, maybe a piece of wooden dowel bored down the middle and then cut in half lengthwise to make a sleeve, if you are handy with wood working tools or know someone who is?

These guys make some dumbell handles in different thicknesses: . I don't know if you can do something with those.

Maybe just wrap tons of tape around where you normally keep your hands..

thats probably the most realistic way im going to be able to do this. except, im going to have to buy another bar in order to do that. what kind of tape do you think is best? duct tape?

dswithers--about the pipe, how would i get it over the 2" end where the weights go on? i cant see how i would be able to take one end of the barbell off. i cant do that with my dumbells either, its attached to the handle.

anyway, i'v seen olympic barbells for 50 bucks. anyone have any tips on buying barbells? is a 50 dollar bar a waste?

the reason im so obsessed with fat bars is because im reading "dinosaur training" by brooks kubik and tons of old school lifters swore by them. i HAVE to at least give them a try. plus, it seems fun. :cool2:

oh and randomly: im getting a trap bar soon. found one for 100$. anyone ever buy one? how much?
