mah knees sound like bubble wrap

iv'e been trying atg squats lately and even without weights my knees crack like crazy a the bottom.

is this genetic or do i have some major/minor knees problems

and can i get some tips to make it stop

Most people who this happens to have incorrect form. Make sure your form is perfect and that you don't break parallel.

Your knees should never cross 90 degrees (~90, give or take a few) from the ground.

Chondromalacia? Sounds just like celery cracking doesn't it?

Welcome to my world. Eventually you won't have any cartilage left in your knees and you'll need a full knee replacement :)

i dont like the sound of that. theres no pain or anything

should this be a doctors visit

also this happens with no weights at all every time no matter what form i use, so i doubt my problem is the form.

oh and i just happen to have celery at my house. sounds just like it.

Chondromalacia patella generally presents with a lot of pain, both dull and sharp, at just about all times (I know because I have the stupid thing). In your case, it could just be popping joints, particularly if you aren't experiencing and pain during or post workouts.

Could be genetic, form-related, wear and tear related. A trip to the doc *may* help you get to the bottom of this, then again, it may not, even with some expensive MRI/xrays.

As pain is not a factor, and you seem to present no signs of weakness or instability, you may simply have joints that crack, not unlike someone's fingers. I'd just keep a really close eye on it, and have someone you know and trust (ie. exercise professional) critique your form for the time being, and if you start experiencing pain, weakness, or instability either during or in between workouts, get to your doc.

thankyou that was very informative.

in jan i'll be treaining with an actual coach so i'll ask then. until that i'll just stick with below parallel

Id even try a different stance. Iv noticed when i do wide stance squats, my knees can crack. But if i squat with a shoulder width stance my knee's are perfect.

Try it.
