Losing weight without exercising

Okaay, I just registered here just to say/ask this.

Im an 18 years old guy. I am an obese.102kg/224lbs.

At December 2010, I started jogging an hour a day (a total of a really fast 50-minute walk and 10mins run without a break.) and I only eat breakfast and dinner and NO I do not overeat, I only eat a normal portions and I am not feeling hungry throughout the day. I've been doing that for 3 months but I am not losing any weight. After 3 months of no success, I gave up and I started overeating and sleeping all day not caring for my weight.. but then this month, I didn't lost any weight BUT I LOOKED SLIMMER! I lost visible inches. My friends and family even thought that I was secretly exercising but I'm actually not. I'm just doing the same old lazy things.

The sizes of my shirts/pants are now in Medium (it was Large/Extra Large before) And now I can't wear my old pants/shirts cause Its too big for me now.

Now here's the question, what is happening to me? Why am I getting slimmer and not losing weight? I am not exercising or anything? I overeat about twice a week and Im not on a diet anymore. I dont exercise... I really need an answer for this :(

This is a very unusual circumstance.

As far as why you weren't losing weight when you were jogging, I have two theories for that.

Firstly, you weren't eating enough calories and your body went into starvation mode. As a result your body tried to store as much calories as it could in order to deal with the lack of calories it was receiving.

Secondly, you were gaining muscle at an even rate to what you were losing in fat, keeping your weight about the same.

It could also just be just a combination of both of those.

I would suggest get back to exercising and try to get a more balanced diet. You can't lose weight by starving yourself. You should be eating at least 3 meals a day. If you don't you'll have too much variance in your blood sugar levels.

I suggest starting a journal on this form consisting of what you eat and what you do for exercise. Update it daily. You'll receive tons of support from others on the forum, including me! :D

Good luck!

Thank you for the reply

I am trying to eat 3 times a day but I couldn't cause I wake up 3pm in the afternoon. I dunno, I always overslept. I eat at 3pm and then at 8pm then I go to sleep at 12mn. I didn't feel hungry throughout every day so I don't know if I was on starvation mode. Maybe because my fats turned into muscles, but that's kinda weird cause It was forming the moment I stopped my diet and exercise.

Hmm.. My body is acting weird :|

Also, I just read about plateaus... And maybe I just hit one. I'll try to exercise again and see if things will go right.

hm. i think you're undereating. if you're eating two legitimately healthy meals, i doubt you're eating more than 800 cal/meal. i'm assuming the brunt of your food is vegetables, which are low in calories and fill your stomach up with fibers. 1600 cal/day is way too little for you. try shooting for 500 calories under your maintainence calories.

also, something is terribly wrong if you are sleeping 15 hours every day.
talk to a doctor perhaps about it? seems rather unhealthy.

I guess you're right, Im undereating.
Well, Actually.. I am eating veggies alot these past few weeks.. also that 15 hour sleep is not actually straight.. I wake up most of the time but I still stay in bed til I sleep again but that's still oversleeping. Since I don't have schools atm and nothing to do everyday, I tend to sleep all day long to skip the day. Maybe I'm losing weight cause I am living unhealthy? I dont really want to see a doctor, I kinda have this fear from them..

Hi,

I suggest seeing your doctor first and foremost (even though it's scary); it's important to rule out any real health concerns. Unexplained weight loss can sometimes be indicative of a systemic problem, such as hyperthyroidism, or a parasitic infection (usually not so scary as it sounds...there are many effective treatments for these types of problems. )

I know sometimes going to the doctor can be nerve-racking...I get the same feeling too. But, I find that when I don't know what's wrong and how to fix it, I go crazy from worry!! Is there anyone you can take to the doctor's office with you to make the visit a bit more familiar?

I hope you're feeling better soon!

haha, actually just like you, i'm not taking summer classes. i force myself to kind of have an active lifestyle, so that summer isn't boring as heck. i wake up, eat breakfast, go to the gym, rest for a bit, just mess around in the community pool or soemthing (nothing serious, but just to stay out fo the house), eat, talk to friends, maybe spend a little time on the computer, go on a bike ride, eat, talk to friends, eat, rest for an hour or so, then sleep. just keep yourself busy, and your appetite will come. and the busy-ness will cause you to use up those calories.
i also notice that when i don't eat healthy, i feel sluggish and/or depressed throughout the rest of the day, so that motivates me to keep up the healthy eating. good luck.
also, yeah, i'd still recommend talking to a doctor =D
