Lose weight by eating breakfast

I always found I ate more through I day if I had breakfast.. Then I realized that 7 cups of coffee with milk and sugar wasn't really skipping breakfast..
I could go all day on coffee and not eat anything, but really, I wouldn't be going around on an empty stomach.

I never used to eat breakfast and I found that I ate a lot more in the mid day and evenings if I skipped it. I feel much more energetic during the day now that I have breakfast in the morning.

I LOVE my porridge (US=oatmeal). I look forward to getting up to it. It would be easy for me to only have porridge every day - I have become a porridge addict! Seriously though - its a great breakfast, as wholegrain as cereals can come - great for the heart, great breakfast for fitness, great especially for colder mornings.

I add things to mine - either whey protein, honey, or almonds.

For variety, every three or four days, I'll have high fibre bran with a chopped banana instead. Every few weeks, I'll have a couple of hard boiled eggs on wholemeal toast. Problem is - what I really always want is ... porridge!

I just like eating way too much to skip breakfast. I try to vary it a little, but most of the time I like a hot cerial like barley (the hulless kind is better than the pearled), or quinoa. Barley is about the lowest glycemic of grains and full of soluble and insoluble fiber. Best of all, it really satisfies. A little barley, chopped apple, garnish of walnuts and cinnamon and maybe a spoonful of yogurt and you are set until lunch! We sweeten with a little stevia. Also good with a spoonful of cocoa.

For convenience we often take a cup of barley and pour it into a Stanley thermos and top it off with boiling water. Seal and leave it overnight and breakfast is ready in the morning!

For variety I sometimes have an egg white omelette with plenty of onions and peppers cooked in a pan lubricated with a quick spray of olive oil. Good with taco sauce.

i think that you feel more hungry throughout the day after eating breakfast, because it boosts your metabolism (which is a good thing)...it allows you to burn calories, and then you need more...just about 4-6 small meals throughout the day if you're worried about saving calories for later..that way you can spread it out during your day.

you are slowing your metabolism by not eating breakfast..that's why you don't feel hungry for awhile...but then when you eat, your body will be more likely to store fat.

that's what i've come to understand anyway...

No, that's a myth. It doesn't boost your metabolism. And while it may be true that people who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese, that doesn't mean eating breakfast helps you lose weight. It's merely a correlation, not a cause. Some people start skipping breakfast because they are obese, and are trying to lose weight.

The supposed benefit of frequent meals is also a myth. Read here.

My two-cents

Everything I have read about weight-maintenance and weight-loss suggests that breakfast is extremely important. I have heard fasting throughout the day and eating one large meal jokingly called 'the Sumo wrestler diet', because it is a sure way to keep your body fat percentage high. This fits with the OP's stat about teenage girls that eat breakfast being slimmer, overall, than those who don't. I find that it helps to think of your body like a car - how well would it run with too little fuel, and then too much? Not very well.

The goal with weight-loss is to become a calorie-burning machine, so if you wake up and you're not hungry, odds are you're not eating enough during the day, or your activity level is very low. In my experience, if I'm not hungry every three hours, I have likely miscalculated my daily calorie intake and need to make adjustments.

Indeed, it is a widespread myth.

Your car has a fuel tank. Do you stop and fill it at every gas station?

Did you follow the link in my post above? It explains that frequent meals do NOT turn your body into a "calorie burning machine."

they both say that eating breakfast will help boost your metabolism..it makes sense to me. if you don't eat breakfast, won't you metabolism kinda go dormant for a little bit until you get some real fuel or activity going?

if NOT having breakfast puts you into starvation mode where you burn less calories as to conserve them, wouldn't the OPPOSITE be a boost in your metabolism? seriously.

No, because there are a lot of things that happen when you fast and they don't equate to 'starvation mode'. Skipping breakfast does not put you into starvation mode, so there is no 'opposite' to be put you into.

Lots of things make sense, but are also wrong.

If you like eating breakfast, continue to eat it. But it's not required to lose weight, nor will you slaughter your metabolism if you skip it.

Why does eating breakfast help control weight?
Answer
from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D.

Here are some of the ways regularly eating a healthy breakfast may help you lose excess weight and maintain your weight loss:

Eating breakfast reduces your hunger later in the day, making it easier to avoid overeating. When you skip breakfast, you may feel ravenous later and be tempted to reach for a quick fix, such as candy from the vending machine. In addition, prolonged fasting — which occurs when you skip breakfast — can increase your body's insulin response, which in turn increases fat storage and weight gain. In fact, skipping breakfast actually increases your risk of obesity.

Eating breakfast gets you on track to make healthy choices all day. People who eat breakfast regularly tend to eat a healthier diet — one that is more nutritious and lower in fat. When you skip breakfast, you're more likely to skip fruits and vegetables the rest of the day too.

Eating breakfast gives you energy, increasing your physical activity during the day. A healthy breakfast refuels your body and replenishes the glycogen stores that supply blood sugar (glucose). Skipping breakfast is associated with decreased physical activity.

Unfortunately, more Americans are skipping breakfast. If you're one of them — whether you're trying to save time or cut calories — you may want to reconsider, especially if you're trying to control your weight.

Look, it comes down to calories in vs calories out. If you feel better eating 6 times a day, fine as long as you still eat less calories than you burn. You can do one huge meal if you want. The usefulness of breakfast is stated above.

I didn't think I was talking about the same thing that you were - I don't know anything about metabolism, those are just my thoughts on eating breakfast.

I can't imagine not eating breakfast. When I was working (currently a full time mum), it was the only thing that motivated me to get up for work - especially if it was cold and raining outside.

I feel deprived if I don't have breakfast, but I agree it can make you feel hungrier. I like to think this is because it kick-starts your metabolism, though I know this is disputed. As long as you are aware of that it makes you hungrier, it's not really a problem - you'll probably find you need a little snack mid-morning to sustain you through to lunch, but it makes you feel good. If I skip lunch, I just feel moody and low, whereas if I eat breakfast, it starts me off in a good mood...

Breakfast is unnecessary extra calories. It's a great myth that it is needed to boost weight loss.

Did our ancestors eat breakfast? No. They went out and hunted their food for dinner.

?

Ok....but see where I linked to medical studies and you made a joke about our ancestors just hunting dinner?

That's how you debate.

When I was overweight, I hardly ate breakfast. I'd have a big brunch, then I'd get sleepy, have tea (the british kind with sweet stuff), and a big dinner.

On my weight loss journey, I made breakfast a priority even if it meant waking up earlier to prepare it. Initially it was hard but after several days, my body got used to eating breakfast (I eat either eggs or yoghurt or like today, I had steamed fish - hmm I think I shall go back to egg). I find that I'm less hungry throughout the day or rather that I don't go into binges anymore. Now, my circadian rhythm is such that I wake up naturally at 5:30 a.m. (good thing because I like to dawdle in the morning), and fall asleep before 11 p.m.

slightly gross

My problem with breakfast is if I ate it, I was starving within an hour or so. It seemed to start my stomach and in no time, it would growl like I didnt eat for days. This has always ruined my attempts at dieting...and only if I skipped breaky, did I feel I was actually helping my weight loss.

Around the time I joined this site, I learned oatmeal was a really good day starter.

Well....I have a warm 1-(1-1/2) cups first thing in the am...with a bit of brown sugar a few raisins and some milk. I still get hungry, just not as quick....but the best part is...I think it is making me healthier. I never ate anything with fiber before and had problems going to the washroom. Now I know what it means to be regular. And no more problems! I'm also losing weight!. Who would have thunk it! So 2 thumbs up for breakfast here. (A healthy breakfast anyways)
