Loose Skin

for women - 14 percent is the low end for athletes - any lower and it's really too low from all I've read -

Ah, so it is... look at what research will show you :) Maybe its because I am trying to get to 12%, so it didn't seem so low. There I go switching around goofy gender roles again...

Just adding some more to this thread. Give it time - the loose skin does fade away a fair bit!
Ive been sitting at the same weight for about 6 months or so now, and the skin has most definatly shrunk a fair bit and continues to do so. Ill still need surgery but ill need a whole lot less than i thought i would!

VERY encouraging. I am seeing a bit of snap back as time goes on as well. Nothing I'd be dying to get my shirt off for, but nothing too horrific either.

Excess skin under arms - What do I do to remove it?

I have some excess skin under there... It's in a "triangular" shape, and It's terrible because I'm thin and I can't even take off my shirt or anything. I've lost a lot of weight recently, can that be why? I just want to know how to remove it. I have a picture here, copy and paste the link.

PS: I'm 14, my torso will probably grow... will this rid the excess skin from my underarm? Thanks.

PS: I'm new to this forum, sorry if this is in the wrong area :banghead:

The excess skin you are seeing is probably the result of your recent weight loss. You skin was stretched to accomidate the excess baggage your body was carrying. When you lost the weight your skin didn't return to it's original taunt position. Sort of like if you take a balloon and blow it up really high and let it sit for a few days, then release the air.. the balloon will have shrank, but won't look exactly the same as it did originally. The good news is that you are very young and as long as you keep the weight off and exercise to tone the muscle underneath, as you grow more the skin will become taunt again. Young skin is very good at bouncing back, the fact that you have more growing to do will help as well.

So, keep up with your healthy lifestyle and your skin will be kind to you.

Paranoid abt loose skin....

been reading abt people who lose weight quickly and end up with great big rolls of hanging skin....how on earth can you stop this from happening???? I really dont want to work really hard and still have hang ups abt my body!!

I moisturise every day, and exfoliate. I do core training exercises and do cardio workouts regularly. At the moment I am losing 3-4lbs per week, but i expect this to staedy to abt 1-2lbs once my body settles to the new diet and exercise program. Am i doing the right things? I cant think what else to do and i am really worried that this will happen to me.

I cant help but wonder abt all these celebs who have babies and spring right back into place! Is that surgery??? Or is there a way to avoid it that i havnt come across yet? HELLLPPPPP!!!!!:svengo::svengo:

I know what you mean. I've got loose skin on my stomach (from having my son 4 years ago) and even though I'm the right weight for my height and do abs exercises etc it doesn't do anything for the skin I'm afraid. I believe the reason I got such bad stretch marks and stretched skin was because my skin wasn't hydrated enough - I didn't drink enough and I didn't really bother with moisturizing, massage etc to try to prevent it. So those are two things I would definitely do now.

I have always had a lot of stretch marks since my rapid excessive weight gain - so cannot really comment on getting stretch marks at the time of weight loss.

I do have loose skin - but I probably deserve to have more loose skin than I have. I still have some weight to lose so it is still uncertain how much loose skin I have.

I think that it all depends on things like how much weight you have to lose and how old you are. These factors work against me as I have lost a lot of weight and have still more to go. Also I will be 49 this year - so am not in the first flush of youth.

I have tried to adopt every good habit that I have heard of - so I eat very healthy food and make sure that I drink sufficient water each day. I normally massage key areas every day (but admit to having been remiss in this since my recent spell in hospital) and I take various vitamins. I have heard that starflower oil is good for your skin.

Why worry about something that might or might not happen - you'll just make yourself crazy...

I've lost almost 200lbs - and have a bit of loose skin, where it's most noticable is when i'm floating in the bathtub, I can see it in my thighs...

If you lose weight at a sensible pace... consider 1 percent of your body weight sensible... and keep with the strength training, you should be fine...

When you're obese you develop fat around your organs, like your heart for example. I would much rather have a bit... or even a lot... of superficial loose skin, than a heart clogged down with fat. Take care of your health, if you have loose skin, let it be for awhile and see if it tones up. If not, you need to decide whether or not surgery is an option. It can be removed if it's affecting your self-image that much.

However, like maleficent said... you're dealing with maybes here. By the time you get to your goal, you may feel differently about the loose skin because of all that you have accomplished. Unless you're like that guy who was something like 500 lbs and his body was horribly deformed from the loose skin, I would wear it as a badge of honour for what you have overcome. But, it's a personal decision that you have to make for yourself. There's no need to worry about it.

Thanks guys :) Think i was having a small panic abt something really silly!! Mal ur totally right that im tormenting myself with maybes - a completely pointless thing to do! Think i will follow all the advice and hope for the best.

I like the idea of a badge of honour! And you're totally right that the health benefits of losing weight far outdo any annoying bits of skin! Im thinking a bit more positively today, so thanks for making me rethink this!

Glad to hear it! Keep in there, you're doing something a lot of people are going to really look up to... hanging skin or not! :)

Excess skin after weight loss

At my heaviest I weighed around 265 pounds. I'm currently around 214, and still dropping the weight by sticking to a healthy diet and workout routine. I'm doing it the healthy and lifelong way this time, unlike in the past where I have done things in a not-so-healthy manner...and consequently have always gained the weight back. Consequently, my body has suffered, which I expected. As I drop more and more weight, more and more of me begins to head south. My stomach in particular is starting to look like something that belongs on the discovery channel in one of those medical shows, where the doctor is seen lifting up folds of skin in the operating room. :( My question is, have any of you successfully lost lots of weight, and then had to have surgery to remove the excess skin that was left behind. I realize that I won't look perfect after all the damage I've done to my body. That isn't what I expect. I do have realistic expectations and I do lift weights to try and maintain some tone in the process, but when you go from being nearly 300 pounds, to working towards a normal weight...there's bound to be some evidence left behind.
If any of you have had this kind of surgery, were you able to get insurance to cover it?
Thanks so much for your patience. :)

well i was 326-330ish when i started, im now about 160ish. I took a 6 month break for a while there and a LOT of the skin has started to finally shrink back. I expect i will need some removed by surgery but even ive been surprised and how much it has shrunk back already.

That gives me hope...my stomach looks like a front butt since I've lost over 45 pounds...but I think I'm a good bit older than you too. I keep hoping that skin will firm up some though....

BTW....awesome weight loss journey and you look so pretty in your glamour shots.

i love my glamour shots too! :D

Yeah i have a front bum too, it sucks, but its definatly shrinking. Most doctors say wait 2 years before surgery because of shrinkage.

Thanks for the reply. :) So when it's all said and done, do you think you will end up having to have surgery after all? I just hate the thought of working so hard, only to be left with this gross, saggy belly. See, I've had two children as well, and gained a LOT of weight with my first one. I have massive amounts of stretch marks, and basically just ruined my stomach during that pregnancy. And when you add severe obesity and weight loss and gain into the mix, what's left isn't pretty. I know I should be proud of my success, but I'm already worried about the permanent damage I may have done to myself.
And before you ask, yes, I do know I'm a spoiled brat. Haha. :)
