Looking for a workout routine.

I'm 19.. about 5'7 130lbs.(skinny) I've wanted to start working out for some time now and I have went to local gyms a few times, but I don't have any clue on what to do once I get there. I've looked into some home workout type things and I'd prefer something like that if it brought the same results. Are any of those home workout DVD programs worth it?

I'm looking to gain 10-15lbs of lean and toned muscle. Abs are something I want to focus a lot on. My nutrition is pretty poor.. I drink sodas and eat out a lot, so I could use some help along those lines. Maybe supplements?

Any suggestions are welcome!

So...first things first. Just make sure you're not avoiding the gym to hide from the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing what the hell you're doing. Working out in front of others (who may or may not know what they're doing) is still one of the best ways to learn and motivate yourself to do better.

Second, and this is important, supplements can't do a thing to overcome a poor diet, so don't even try it. Want to know how to balance that diet? Balance the diet. Cut the sodas and know what you're putting into your body. More importantly, know what your body needs to achieve your goals and feed it that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't Orange Crush, as delicious as it is.

Best of luck.

Wow. I do actually feel uncomfortable once I get to the gym. It can't be helped, though.. I get that feeling often.(I've had problems with depression) But, now I feel I want to give the things I have wanted to do for awhile (like working out) a shot. I have more motivation.

I know I can drop the sodas and unhealthy foods. I just need to know what to replace them with. I have trouble gaining 5lbs and keeping it, so I know I will need a good nutrition plan. How do I find out what my body is like? And by supplements I meant protein shakes and stuff like that. Not roids or anything =)

As for my goals, I'm not looking to get fit. I would say im in decent shape already. I played soccer about 7 years growing up and after that went to basketball, but I haven't ever worked out. I want those extra pounds and I want to cut/rip them (I don't know what the right term is).

Side Effect, when I was your age it's exactly the same attitude that got me where I am today. 30 yo, overweight and out shape that is.

Get to the gym! Depression 'problems' are common at your age. No one will point and make fun of you in the gym trust me. That stuff is all in your head. I must look totally lame myself dragging my man-boobs around the gym in my old workout clothes, and believe me when I say that people have been the nicest ever with me. Always polite and helpful and supportive. Much nicer than people *outside* the gym actually! It's now a real pleasure for me to go there every other day, and I actually *miss* that place when I'm not going.

Stay consistent, eat properly and follow the advice on this forum. You'll see results in no time.

+1 from me! Your confidence will grow as your body does what you want it to do and the depressions issues will get easier. I walked in a gym for the first time at 270 and while that was difficult, the results are WELL worth it! (I am 5'8", and a chick!

Now, to answer the WHAT to do question, depending on what your gym has to offer, it might be a good place to start with the "machine" weights. These isolation exercises will help build the foundation to more in-depth weight training, plus it will give you the opportunity to watch what others are doing to get a sense of what to do.

Freeweights and combination exercises are where you will make your biggest gains, but you can start those in a few weeks, once your baseline is set.

Check out the "Journals" section of this site--find someone in a similar position to you or even a seasoned lifter--copy their routine! There's lots of help to be found on this site!

The next thing you need to work on is your nutrition...skip traditional "junk" foods, but find foods that are healthy and "whole". You will need to eat more than a "maintenance" amount of calories in order to gain weight and build mass/muscle. Good luck!
