Little John's Penultimate Goal

Yep, agree 100% - not going to let the setback mess me up. It happened, there's no point crying over spilled milk (or pizza, or ice cream, or beer, or cookies, or... Did I mention it was all spilled down my throat?).

I wouldn't call it all spilled either. You had a good time with good foods, and there's a price to pay. I'd say having to diet for a wee bit longer is a price worth paying.

I'll be joining you on a month of xmas penance.
I went to Catholic High School and I just came up with a million dollar diet plan: you hire a nun and every time you reach for junk food or decide to blow off your workout, she whacks your knuckles with a yardstick, and makes you kneel on a hard floor for 15 minutes.

I'll call it genuflexing.

Oh the weakness. Anyway, checking back in. I haven't been bad, per se, but I haven't been good either, just kind of stuck at 305-310.

The title of my thread comes to fruition this Sunday! I'll be competing in the 2013 CRASH-B Regalia in the Men's Masters Class (sounds fancy, but it just means I'm in my 30s). My father will be "coaching" me, and my time should place me in 50th out of 60, or there-abouts.

Sorry I disappeared for so long, I have no excuses, but I do plan on getting out of this slump after the race!

You're so close to being under 300. Good luck at your race. I had to look it up to find out what it was. I had no idea that indoor rowing was a competitive thing. There's not much rowing sports in my part of Texas indoors or outdoors.

Thanks Quercus. I'm getting back on the weight loss boat tomorrow.

I'm pretty happy with my row yesterday, as painful as it was. My at-home record is 7m24.9s, and I raced yesterday at 7m12.7s. Came in 35th out of 44th, with the winner rowing a 6m04.1s - I believe he broke a world record.

Anyway, gonna try to kick my afternoon snack needs starting tomorrow, and next week I'll start bringing in oatmeal again. AAAANNDD... I'll be a lot more active here again! I'll start checking others' diaries soon enough.

Ciao and good luck!

Hey Little John, was wondering when you'd make it back. Congrats on finishing the row and beating several guys.

My motto is that you haven't failed at losing weight until you decide to give up at it, so good to get back on track. Of course my motto is also "why yes, I'll have another," so YMMV.

Thanks guys. Now my next decision - do I row to burn calories or do I row to improve ability... Arguments in both directions, I'll figure it out. Leaning now towards the burning until the end of summer, then start ramping up ability for next years' races. But we shall see.

So far today I've resisted my temptations. Didn't eat my afternoon snacks early, so when 2:30 shows up, I'll have some yogurt and pumpkin seeds on-hand, and a banana for the drive home. And a good 500-600 calories of rowing tonight...

You probably have included this info in your thread, but I haven't read it all yet.... what rowing apparatus are you using? Does it occupy a big footprint?

BTW, great job on your loss over the past year!

Hey Don, thanks for checking in. I have a Concept2 Model D - it works by basically spinning a big "squirrel cage" fan in conjunction with some bungee cords. Fairly simple, really. When it's setup to row, it's got about an 8' by 2' footprint, and when broken down (under 15 seconds), it's probably about 3' x 2'.

It appears from a cursory look online that these have a 500 lb. weight capacity, which I could use. Has it been a good, solid piece of equipment for you? Do you recommend it?

I looked on Craigslist and someone nearby has a Model E for $800, which seems reasonable (?). I'm not going to jump and buy one today, but I've been considering a rower to replace my stationary bike to give me a better overall workout. I like that it is fairly compact when not in use.

Ask anyone who knows me here if I recommend it... :biggrinjester: I definitely do - it's a good all-round workout, muscles and the heart, you decide how hard the workout is, and you can do it online (if you want) and race against other people.

When I was 350, sitting on it definitely felt secure, it bends a little bit, but not in an alarming sort of way. Added bonus, it's really light, and fairly portable - it breaks into two pieces that aren't too clumsy to move around.

I have zero regrets with this one. Model E is the newest version, don't remember the difference between it and the D, but you'll want to have a PM-4 performance monitor if you'll eventually want to participate online.

Thanks for the tips. I may be trying that road at soon, as I think the effects of the stationary bike are pretty limited, relatively.

I dig the C2 rower as well. I would have one if there wasn't A: One at my gym and B: a cheap bastard in my heart. It's super sturdy too. There is only one at the gym and it holds up to constant use. The gym is also a physical rehab center so I'm not the only hefty one wailing on it.

So Day 1 of my twice-reborn-again health went so-so. I did pretty well until after dinner. I had beef/bean tacos for dinner (barely within caloric budget), but let my chocolate compulsion get the better of me. Plus I got home too late to row last night, so I'll make that up tonight. Not gonna beat myself up, it's just a re-entry burn.

Don, $800 for a Model E is a pretty good deal. At the end of CRASH-B they sell the rowers (which are pretty much brand new), and the Model E goes for $900-950 (compared to 1200 or so). If you end up looking at it, check to make sure the rollers aren't clicking (they could just be dirty, Windex fixes that), and that the chain/handle returns nicely. The previous owner should have maintained it regularly, which includes cleaning/lubing the chain every month or so.
