Little John's Penultimate Goal

Sigh... kinda bummed. The weekend was somewhat high from a consumption standpoint, had an old friend over and had much beer and wine. I also came to the conclusion this morning that my rotator cuff and tennis elbow aren't going to get any better if I don't let them relax, so I'll be taking some days off of the rower and from lifting. I'll be doing some walking instead, but that doesn't kill the calories as well, and I can't do any running. Wah.

I believe I'll take advantage of the down time to do a little repair/maintenance on the rowing machine, though, the rollers seem to have some nicks in them, which results in ticking as a slide fore and aft. Doesn't affect performance, it just drives me nuts.

Good luck with those rollers and the walking.

In short...

Little injuries suck ...

but not resting them leads to bigger injuries that suck a lot more....

so enjoy the time that sucks less.

Good luck resting up on those injuries. Probably the best way to increase the calorie burning effectiveness of walking without shredding your knee is walking up hills and things like that.

little John, apart from the rowing what type of exercise have you been doing that effects your elbow and shoulder ? unless it is a specific incident that you can pinpoint that caused the injury, it is usually a muscle imbalance that causes the problem in the long term. For the rotator cuff massage really helps.

Sometimes you need rest to heal up. I am stuck resting right now due to being sick. As long as you get right back on it as soon as you can!

OK, I'm back after a few days without access. Funny thing happened on the scale yesterday morning: I hopped on, and I was .2 lb up from last week - which makes sense. Then I peed, and I was down .8 from pre-pee. So I dropped under 300 for the first time in a long time! I'll take it.

Trus, I've been doing an all-over lifting regime, but haven't been good about maintaining the rotator cuff. Both that and tennis elbow are pretty common injuries from rowing with improper form, and it's easy to do it wrong when you're rowing sprints. Thanks to the rest and staying on top of regular Advil and icing, it's looking pretty good to start up again soon - I'm thinking Sunday will be a 9K, then back up to where I left off starting on Monday.

Great work getting under to 300 mark :)

If your interested I can suggest a couple of exercises to rebuild your rotator cuff strength to help prevent it happening again when your ready to return to training.

Having a hard time getting back in the saddle, as it were. I lifted on Monday night, but it was a mediocre-at-best session. I'm rowing tonight for the first time in over a week - still have a twingy elbow, though the shoulder's OK. I'm thinking of replacing the handle with something wider - no such thing from the MFR, so I'll have to be creative - possibly a mountain bike handlebar.

Also, last weekend was a tough one - no one's fault but mine. Just a lot of overdoing it. This coming weekend is a variety of grownup activities - Xmas shopping for the kiddo (that will include adult beverages), Grad party, double-date night, comedy show, and post-show beverages. I'll have to buffer up on the days prior and after to make up for that day. And I'll have to plan my cuisine on that Saturday to be smart.

There are times where I just wish it could be easy. I know that's asking too much, and I usually don't mind the work, but it's hard to combine weight-loss with pleasure.

Yep it is. I was out drinking last night and certainly was over my calorie allotment for the day, but I think I probably still was at a small deficit. I suppose you can try and hold the fort when it's time to play, and then lose the rest of the time.

Congrats on getting under the 300s, that's awesome! Sorry you're still having elbow/ shoulder issues, hope you go ok getting back into exercise! Last thing you want to do is make it worse!

Hey LJ, just saw the news. Don't know where in CT you are, but it's probably a sad thing regardless. Condolences to the families, and to the state of Connecticut in general. What an awful tragedy.

Thanks Vee - thankfully no one I know was affected by it, I'm about 1.5 hrs away from Newtown, but it's definitely a preoccupation around here.

As for the weight loss front, I'm losing the battle right now. I'm exercising, but struggling with food intake. Maybe I'm too busy, maybe I'm just cruising in for the rest of the year, I don't really know, but I think the reset button happens on Jan 1st. We won't be tearing it up on NY eave, so I won't have a hangover to stop me. Sigh... This happens too much, where I just stop caring.

Glad to see you back. The holidays are always hard, your busy and there's always folks cooking holiday stuff. It's cold so it's hard to stay active. If you can keep 'bad' from becoming 'worse' during the holidays, that will make it that much easier when back on track.

As I mentioned on another thread, in the year before I started the weight loss, I put on 20 pounds to go from 355 to 375. At 355 I really needed to do something about my weight anyway, but tacking on another 20 only made things more difficult for me when I did start. That is to say, if you can keep from gaining much the damage won't be too bad.

Maybe set your cals to maintainance for the next couple of weeks, it's what I do sometimes, it seems like heaps more food, and seems easier to manage when life is getting difficult. I think it makes it easier for when you drop the cals back down too.
Good luck.

OK, time to reboot. December wasn't something to brag about - ate poorly, didn't really exercise, other things... I'll be able to focus for the next few months, though, so that's what I'm gonna do.

Embarrassed and ashamed to say I regained most of my November loss, putting me back up to 309.6 and 29.4% BF. Not going to dwell on it, though, just gonna eat more veggies and less junk.

Not much else to report, just checking back in. Happy New Year!

Welcome back Little John.

The holidays can be tough. Nothing wrong with circling the wagons and rebooting and getting back to business. Letting a setback _keep_ you of course is the killer.
