Lift, Train, Fitness

I'm sorry the gas clouds have reached you as well. Sometimes I just want to drag people to a (cold) shower. With a 10 meter pole so I don't have to get too close.

join the club... i am just getting over a cold (virus, not the flu). i haven't been sick in well over a year or two, so i knew i was due. but this is the pattern... i run a temp for about 24 hours after which most symptoms subside but, due to post nasal drip, the cough starts and remains for a few weeks. what i have found helps is a simple antihistamine.

I have had this cough for the last 6 weeks, no nasal or sinus congestion, no temperature. Doc already had me on an antihistamine to see if it made a difference. Whenever I get ill I am prone to get chest infections that far outlast the initial cold, and are hard to treat and get rid of. I have not been getting much sleep because when I am lying down it is difficult to breath, triggering coughing fits with the only result being that I may bring up a small hard lump of mucus

Do you have Asthma, Tru? I used to often end up with a chest infection after a cold & it may be coincidence, but since I started having a hot lemon drink every night I have had neither. Sometimes I think I'm starting to get a cold or get chesty & I take Echinacea, but usually only for a few days.

Do you have Asthma, Tru?

Yes, When I was young I spent a lot of time in hospital for both Asthma and Croup in an oxygen tent. Croup is rare in Adults but my cough, breathing problems exacerbated by lying down and high pitched wheeze are all classic croup symptoms.

Doc has prescribed some meds and hope it clears up.

all this made dealing with that problem yesterday with the scent much worse.

My asthma is the reason I seriously HATE swimming, being forced to do a lot of an activity as a kid often leads to hating that activity.

I had missed your post about the stinky receptionist! Can you wear a mask when you go back for the scan? It is discriminatory & just plain inconsiderate to think that someone's attachment to their "fragrance" is more important than other people's right to breathe.

I hope you get well soon.
the main problem is the barking cough and breathing problems at night outside of that I don't feel unwell and it is not having an effect on training.

Ended up no DOMS from heavy squat/light deads on Wednesday, muscles have adapted really quick. Today was light speed bench and shoulder rehab/injury prevention exercises.

Bench was nice and smooth but speed needs to increase. Increased weight on Serratus press from 25 up to 42.5, this muscle is soooo hard to isolate but soooo important for shoulder health. Cubans went very well, last week I had to finish my sets with light DBs this week was able to finish all 4 sets with the half bar, showing definite improvement in external rotator strength (Teres Minor, Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus) and range of motion improvement. Back extensions are up from bodyweight to bodyweight + 30 kg.

If only feeling well automatically meant being well.

Tell me about it. And that´s you working with an excellent sense for what´s happening in your body.

Feeling a little tender this afternoon, the weight may not have been big this morning, but working all the small muscles is hard work.

And very worth it, especially for people like you who play with the big weights. You don´t know how wonderful it is to see someone who lifts the heavy stuff and actually cares about how it all works and what it does in and to the body.

.... My asthma is the reason I seriously HATE swimming, ...
i never really thought about that, but i can see your point... when i finally learned how to breath properly to be able to swim more than one or two laps, it has everything to do with controlling your breathing. when swimming you only have a split second to inhale deeply and on the flip side, when you exhale you need to forcibly blow all the air out of your lungs while your face is submerged. very taxing to your lungs... though it is the best non-impact exercise i can think of.

I have seen it far too often in various gym, all the young gym bros who have the good genetics to built size no matter what exercise they do or how they do the exercise, then a few years later you see those same guys struggling with serious injuries, no fitness at all and never to be seen in a gym again. Yet it is these same guys that you see time and time again giving out lifting advice like they are some sort of exercise god. All of this is perpetuated by the common sentiment that unless a personal trainer has that "look" then they know nothing.

An example of this, my youngest son has both the achievements on the competition stage and the big muscles and visible abs to go with it. At his soccer training when I arrived to pick him up one afternoon, all of the young men on his team were trying to find out his secret and how to train to look like that (these guys were all 5-6 years older than him) to my sons credit he simply told them he does the exercises mum gives him and if they want to know how to do it they should ask me. If my son was a typical gym bro in this situation there would have been a ton of bullshit advice given, received and treated like gospel.

while I struggle to keep injuries in check, all of the work I put in to maintain good muscle health and balance means at least I am still lifting, and in many cases lifting far more than the young men who think of themselves as gym gods. Looking at it now, I don't know of any of the men I grew up with that still lift or do much of anything physical and I am aware that most have back problems etc. that could have been prevented.

My body may not look perfect, I am not a bodybuilder but at least apart from a few problem areas getting worked on, my body is strong and functional.

I agree, it is a great exercise and I do recommend swimming, it is just not my personal choice of exercise.

As a coach/trainer you still need to be able to recommend good exercises even if you have a personal dislike, having a dislike for an exercise does not necessarily make it a bad exercise.

There are some gym exercises which are in general considered bad or dangerous, however those same exercises if done correctly with proper supervision can be exactly the exercise that needs to be done and yet there are common exercises that the average person thinks are great exercises when in reality those exercises should not be done in general.

That right there is how it should be. And couldn't agree more about youth and good genes blinding people to actual knowledge and ability. Plus there's a big difference between being able to do something well and being able to teach well.

It's something I've talked about with a physio friend who's been doing bjj for years and by now she's often (one of) the oldest on the mats even though she's younger than me. There's few trainers who are still actively participating by the time they're 40. Which might be ok if you're working with pros but if it's supposed to be a hobby yet they're used up by 35 something's going very wrong.

Had scan, no tears, some calcification (expected) small amount of thinning but not a problem. Chronic Bursa problems, inflammation, very enlarged person doing the scan could see the bursa crinkling up as the shoulder was externally rotated while in the abducted position. Exactly the movement I need for squat.

will see what doc has to say on Wednesday but expectation I will need an injection to begin with.

Bench training went well this morning (just after my scan) son trained as well, he was working on his shoulder exercises, which are very important with his level of hypermobility.

had followup with GP today, medication had no effect on clearing cough/breathing problem, had chest xray and booked in for lung function test. Also have an appointment for cortisone injection for shoulder.

Doing training tonight for squat, so son can train as well, he is still sore from last training session lol
