Less calories

Heya im not sure where to put this post.... But if you dramatically cut down your calories a day e.g under 900 calories and do no excersise could you still lose weight?. I have been using the FLABeLOS machine at a salon for ten mins a day all this week and i have had to walk there and back to the salon ( about half an hour both ways ) and i havn't really done any excersise at home but i have been eating under 900 calories will this work?.
Thanks x

That's too low. 900 Cal. will make you crash at some point, it's not sustainable. Make sure your minimum is at least 1200 if you must reduce. Try to get enough macro-nutrients too.

What artfirms said. Way too low in calories.

And a little hint - those machines are nonsense. Invest your money in some healthy food instead.

What the others have said. Never eat under 1200 calories.

I think it's possible to lose weight without exercise. What I've done (although I've done this keeping my exercise in mind) is calculated my maintenance calorie allowance. Go to this site (if there are any ads on it I can't see them, I use ad blocker): BMR Calculator Put in your details (metric or imperial), get your BMR, then follow the link to calculate for exercise level. That's the amount of calories you need to stay your current weight. If you reduce that number by 500 (don't do that if that's going to take you under 1200), and that's the amount on average you eat a day, then you should lose a pound a week. You can decrease by up to 1000 (as long as that number is over or equal to 1200) to lose 2 pounds a week, but ultimately I don't think that it's realistic for most people to be able to do that (and stick to it) and stay satisfied and eating a healthy balanced diet.

But exercise definitely helps with that (and other things, like health, but let's keep it to weight loss). For example, my BMR is 1538.9. If I were completely sedentary, my maintenance would be 1847 (rounded to nearest calorie) calories a day- that's not a very big number, and then to lose a pound, I'd need to eat 1347 calories a day. I've been calorie counting since the beginning of the month, and trust me, that would be really hard to maintain. If I were lightly active (light exercise/ sport 1-3 days a week), my maintenance would be 2116 calories, and so to lose a pound a day I'd need 1616 calories, which is easier to maintain, but doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room. As it happens I'm moderately active (moderate exercise/ sport 3-5 days a week), so my maintenance is 2385, making my calorie goal to lose a pound a week an easily attainable 1885 calories a day. I can eat that much and be more than satisfied (providing I make filling choices that are low calorie), and still have a varied, balanced, and healthy diet.

Also, how are you calorie counting? Are you weighing/ measuring and going with the nutritional information exactly, approximating, or guessing? I find it very difficult to believe you've been eating under 900 calories a day- my (low calorie, portion controlled) 3 meals a day usually clock in at least 1100 (not including snacking, which I find a very important part of my diet). I'm not trying to be insulting- most people have no idea how many calories are really in things (bread is surprisingly calorific, for example, and a lot of people have no idea how many calories are in cheese). If you haven't been seeing weight loss, maybe you need to re-think how you calorie count. (And if you are eating that little, and not losing weight, it's because you're making yourself sick)

Re exercise, forget that machine- it won't help you. Do the same walk, but walk for an extra 10-20 minutes past the salon and back again.

I have been eating under 900 i have been weighing everything out and not just guessing all ive eaten in 4 days is like sugar free jelly, dry cereal soup & yoghurt and drinking lots of water so im not as hungry i am not eating and bread/crisps/chocolate/cheese ive done that bmr thing thanks for the link. im not really eating 3 meals a day im just eating when i come home and then stopping for the night i dont know if ive lost weight im not going to weigh myself till the end of the week. Yeah thanks i was going to get a longer block booking on the machine but i dont think im going to bother now i think im just going to walk more and do an excersise dvd in my house xx

You cannot survive on 900 calories a day. You'll make yourself very sick, and your metabolism will slow in order to save you from dying (which means you won't lose weight). 1200 is the absolute minimum that the smallest, most sedentary woman needs to live. And you're not eating a balanced diet at all- think 5 fruits and vegetables a day, a serving of lean meat, lots of starchy foods (look to the NHS guidelines for ideas). You're not getting your nutrients, which not only means your health will suffer on that basis as well, but your appearance will suffer too- your body needs those nutrients to keep your skin, hair, nails, teeth etc healthy.

I agree with what the others have said already about 900 cals per day being too low. The ACSM states that "minimum energy intake to consume a nutritionally adequate diet is approximately 1200 kcal per day. Dietary intake below this minimum level may be deficient in essential nutrients." Not taking in all of the nutrients that your body needs can lead to some serious negative health effects, both in the short and long term.

Yes, you can lose weight without exercising, but there are so many positive health effects that go along with regular exercise, that I would never recommend it. I always recommend physical activity.

Also jessikat beside ehat others have said about the cals i ENCOURAGE to exercise for 2 reasons

1 it burns cals so you can eat more or lose mpre your choice

2 wheb you exercise it releases endorphines into your body an it will make you feel GREAT

Yes, you can lose weight without exercising and if 900 works for you then go for it. Now and then I'm sure you will have more. Listen to your body.

Absolutely not! 900 Cal a day is asking for problems. Please do not give advice like this.

You need to read this thread about low calorie diets in concentration camps
Low Calorie Diets
You also should talk to a doctor and check your own health just to be on the safe side if that's your view of calorie consumption Lacey.

Yeah, I asked my doctor about my own diet recently, and her face turned worried when I uttered the words "calorie counting". She said "how many calories are you eating and how did you work it out?" I told her about working out the BMR and how I worked out my own figure (~1800/ day), and she said it was fine as long as I wasn't losing anything more than a kilo a week (if I lose more, she told me to eat more).

It's amazing how two people can read the same article and get two completely different things out of it! I read both references about extremely low calorie diets and the "Great Starvation Experiment" and I am still in favor of 800-900 calorie diets and here is why... If you choose to go on a very low calorie diet it is for a short period of time (not the 12 months like in the starvation experiment). Also, you are eating 800-900 calories but the starvation experiment was starvation (no food). Also, you don't go hungry when you choose a very low calorie diet (VLCD)... you are doing it by choice so if you are hungry, you eat. Also, most doctors define a VLCD as one that is under 800 calories for a "prolonged" period of time. I'm sure I have other reasons but I can't think of them right now. My best advise is, if you are otherwise healthy, go for it. We eat way too many calories anyway and can do with much fewer (especially for short periods). Listen to your body and it will tell you when it needs more.
