leg strength w/o squats and deadlifts

i have torn ligaments in my lower back which is preventing me from doing squats and deadlifts for a while. what are the best leg excercises that dont put stress on the lower back?

I have had trouble doing squats and deadlifts also. You could try the front squat, which puts less stress on your back. And I believe your going to have to stop deadlifting all togeather for now.
 
yes, i have been in physical therapy for over a month. when i asked about weight training they told me that it is fine to do as long as i dont do any excercises that involve lifting weight over shoulders(squats, push press, power clean, etc.) and anything else that puts alot of stress on the lower back.
 
pistols (1 legged squats)..step ups...walking lunges...sl squats with back leg elevated...might be a good time to catch hams up i think
