Late Night Snacking

my biggest problem with my weight loss is the cravings that come at night time...i'm sure a lot of you have this problem...i'll be completely on track calorie wise all day and then before bed i'll lose my will power and grab chocolate, crackers, yogurt, etc. and before i know it i've eaten 500 calories and blown the day...

what do you guys to do counter those cravings? sometimes i try drinking water instead, but i live in a cold climate and i'd rather have something warm and comforting! lol...i get cold easily hehe

oh man haha i remember in the begining late at nite id have a lean pocket or something cause i was starving(or at least my body thought so)but later on i added a late nite snack to my diet.which has been yogurt, whatever power bar i have on hand, and 90 calorie cheese for the past 8 months.and later on when those cravings return i fight them with sugar free hard candys like livesavers sours or ill chew gum and have ice cold water on hand(water does work).

if your problem is not fulling full after dinner what i started doing was adding a salad and side of fresh steamed veggies(easily done in the microwave i found out)to whatever i was eating(brown rice or whole grain rice works to) and it really helped me get full and take in plenty of fresh veg at the same time.id rather stuff myself with veggies and know its okay....than feel guilty for having gone and had fast food or junk food or something cause i didnt get full off my diet foods.

I know exactly how you feel in the evenings. I also have these cravings quite often in the evening. What I usually do then is preparing myself a lovely hot tea with some splenda for the sweetness. It is not as good as chocolate, but it is something like an alternative. And if the cravling gets too strong I just brush my teeth and go to bed...

I struggled with this myself, especially at the beginning of my weight loss journey.

#1. I planned a evening snack in my mean plan. Usually a sugar free pudding with lite cool whip, or a "Skinny Cow" ice cream- both these things fulfilled my chocolate fix and have protein to fill ya up.

#2. Often times, I WANTED a snack out of habit, not hunger. Getting thru the first few weeks trying to understand true hunger from habit took some effort, but now I generally only eat a snack after dinner if I'm truly hungry, except for Thursday nights I usually have air popped popcorn to eat while "my shows" are on.

One day at a time dear, and new healthier habits will form. And allow yourself a treat when needed- just be sure to COUNT it.

Good Luck!

And do you keep on losing weight although you are eating a sugar free pudding withlite cool whip in the evening? I can imagine that this snack really has an effect on your diet, hasn't it? Most people say that you you shouldn't eat anything after 6pm. But maybe that is just not true and I don't have to go to bed when the small apetite comes up and I can just grap a pudding like you do! :)

there are a bunch of threads here on the eating after xx hour subject -and the bottom line is - it's the total amount of calories consumed in the day that matters - not when you have them...

You can eat whenever you want- it's total calories in for the day that count not when you ate them. I'm a late night snacker so I always leave myself around 400 cals to play with at night , otherwise I tend to go over.

I plan for a snack but I'm rarely hungry enough to eat one. If I do it's usually chocolate caramel protein powder blended into ice and water. If I'm out and it's late I have a decaf latte with skim.

See, I wouldn't lose any weight with that method, because there would be no way for me to stick with it. Some days, I don't have half my calories for the day in by 6pm. Which is fine, because I have another 5 hours to eat them.

It's always a good night for me when I have calories / macronutrient ratio left for some oatmeal with pear as a late-night snack. Tonight will be a good night. :)

So far so good! I think I'm slower than most, but it IS coming off and it will stay that way as this is not a diet, but a way of life for me. FYI- the total calories in that snack are @70calories.

I can imagine that it is not always easy to have almost all the calories you should have a day before 6pm. I also think that this method is kind of stupid. It is better to say that you shouldn't eat 4-6 hours before you go to bed, because then your gastric is still full at that time.

Well that is the most important thing. And at least you can say that you are not on a strict diet, you are only changing your way of eating. That is probably really good, because otherwise you often gain all the kilos back after having stopped the diet. And 70calories is acutally not to much. Great that you have found a good way for yourself to lose weight!

I've struggled with this a lot, I've always been a late night snacker so it's a hard habit for me to break. I find it best if I plan for a late night snack by leaving enough calories available so when I do eat at night I'm still within my calorie limit. I would suggest if you don't want to eat at all at night, try to keep yourself occupied and keep your hands busy.

I'm an evening snacker too. I know that I'm going to need that evening snack so I plan on it and save for it.

If you're a popcorn lover, those 100 calorie packs made by Jollytime are great. 5 butter flavor and 5 kettle corn and it's really a pretty good size serving for 100 calories. The kettle corn has that nice salt/sweet combination that I like.

If you're a popcorn lover

I have an popcorn pumper for air popping. I use spray butter and there is a brand of seasonings called Kernel Seasonings with a large variety for flavors-
I have at least 3 in my cabinet right now: Ranch, Parmesan Garlic, White Cheddar. So good, and virtually no calories. YUMMY!

I picked up some of the white cheddar flavor today. I haven't tried it on food yet, but I did stick my finger in the bottle to sample it and thought it was pretty darn good. :)

I'm guessing they have enough sodium to kill a horse...but thankfully I have no problems with blood pressure or heart disease so I let myself eat loads of sodium.

Not so much, I think. The link below spells it all out but salt has 470 mg of sodium, and the flavors range between 80 and 0 mg of sodium.

LOL one would think I work for this company or have stock- maybe I should! Would love to get a discount!

Ooh, watch out for the serving size! My daughter puts that Cabot powdered Cheddar on her popcorn, and she could easily eat 1/4 cup on a bag of popcorn. Which is like 48 1/4 tsp servings.

Popcorn is so yummy. I have a popcorn machine and I really enjoy making my own popcorn. And it doesn't contain so much sugar like popcorn usually has. But actually I don't have to add any sugar or butter to the freshly made popcorn. I completely forgot that this machine exists. Probably this would be a great evening snack!

Are you sure that you can really eat whenever you want to? Then I am wondering why there are so many doctors who say that you definitely shouldn't eat after 6pm. It would be great it this statement wasn't true, but I don't know yet. Where did you get the information from? Or have you experienced that late night snacking doesn't have any effects on your weight?
