Any Ideas on this on???

Yes I am new to the forum, and I am looking for some advice.
I started a fitness program created by me about 4 weeks ago.
Now.... I am a fairly big person 6' 2" large frame and about 250lbs
however I am not hugely fat. I am fit and healthy but I would like
to loose maybe 40-50lbs.

So far I have counted calories daily reducing them by about 500
per day and I cycle 10-12k per day 6 days a week.

After 4 weeks of sticking to this without deviation I have gained 1lb
in weight.

The calories I am consuming are good, with plenty of fruit and good
quality meat fish for my protein intake. I do not feel hungry due to
the diet at all, but I am cheesed off that I've gained weight.

Before I started I was eating all sorts of crap at night whilst watching TV,
crisps with sour cream dips chocolate etc and my weight has not altered in
over 2 years give or take a couple of lbs.

Can anyone shed some light on why this has happened, because its
beyond me!!

Thanks

Hi, you're about the same size I was last Nov/Dec. I'm 6'0 and was 253. The dietary changes you've made are great. I found cutting out soda and salty snacks helped a lot. I now only drink water and coffee(tea). Lots of water.
Fruits contain more calories than people expect, so don't go crazy on fruits. You can eat veggies till you pop though lol.

For working out I started heavy on the cardio running 20 minutes was a struggle but gradually built up to 30, 45 and then 60 minutes. I try to better my distance every cardio session. I am not impressed with the belief that you need to be constantly changing it up - the whole point to me is to get better at running.
With cardio I think the maximum benefit kicks in after 45 minutes so I always aim for 60 minutes. It took a while to build up to that though.

Are you keeping a food-log on any websites? I use fitday.com - makes it really easy. I find that I do a lot of rounding up to compensate for the usual habits of under-estimating.

You might want to buy a pair of dumbells and add that to your workout - with the cheaper ones that use the old-style plates you have a huge variety of exercises you can do.

It's not a 5-minute process, dropping weight. Sometimes like when you change your lifestyle your body takes a while to decide to let the weight go. A lot of people here notice that weight 'plateaux' lasts a few weeks and then suddenly you drop 4 lbs in a couple of days.

Good luck, and keep up the progression.

Hey Ayd.

First off, well done for all the excersize you're putting in. It sucks that you're not seeing the results you want to on the scale but remember, you are building muscle which weighs more than weight so consider looking at yourself and wondering if your body has changed at all. I know that when I started working out, I could definately saw muscles begin to build and tighten. If you're eating well and you're sure that's not the problem, then consider the water you're consuming. Water is SO important. When you're dehydrated, not only do you feel hungry, but your body can't burn fat as effectively. And if you're excersizing, sweating, losing water and NOT replacing it in your body, that may be a reason for weight gain.

One really effective form of fat-burning excersize is interval training. That means running (or cycling) really hard for a minute and then slowing down for ninety seconds or something like that. Changing up your excersize will keep your heart rate up without completely burning you out, and is apparently really good at keeping up your metabolism.

Keep up the good work!

I think Rosee hit it.
Muscle weighs more than fat. Ignore the scale for a while and whip out the measuring tape. That'll give you a better indication of your progress than anything else, especially if you're incorporating weight training.

Thank you for your feedback and support. When you are trying fit the training into a busy schedule with 10 hours a day a work and you still try to make time for your wife and children, it kinda de-motivates you when you are trying hard to fit in the excercise with not gains!

Ans Iain its great to see how well you have done with a little determination!! well done, and I hope that I can say the same of myself in 6 months time :)
