Journey to the Centre of the Four... (A Rower's Journal)

As I said, the single and double but coach is also considering putting me into one of the Elite IV's if they need somebody to take weight (as they are all over crew average requirement - 70kg).
It's in 11 days, the 6th and 7th of December.

Not sure if I misread what you asked Maureen but it's the State Championships, I'm not travelling to the (United) States :cheeky:

When I hear "the states", I automatically assume it's the USofA ;)

My mistake, Sam! Silly me :D

Regardless of my error, it's still very good news!!!!

I didn't use 'the' though ;)

Any thoughts on the best method to get my racing fitness up to speed (pardon the pun)? Firefreak, any thoughts?

Tuesday 25/11/08 - Day 86 (11 Days to Deadline)

No rowing this morning.
Session with the fitness coach and the new program is a step up from the old one. He didn't give me a copy to train with for this week so I can't write it out for you, but it's the next step up from the previous program. All I know is it was bloody hard, we finished with extensive plyometrics which ****ed me up big time. It was a very, very solid workout.

Afternoon I did 6 500m pieces rating 32, with 1min recovery. I didn't focus too much on the splits just aiming to keep the rating up during the work. Average split for the pieces at the end was 1:38.9 so pretty solid.

Had work that night, was fairly cruisey.

Food: Under
Breakfast:
8 weetbixw/1% Milk

Snack 1 (post fitness coach session):
Protein Shake w/1% Milk and Honey

Lunch:
Whole Wheat Pasta w/tomato and basil sauce and Beef Mince

1xSalami, Ham and Cheese sandwich on wholemeal
Bottle of Powerade

Dinner:
Whole Wheat Pasta w/tomato and basil sauce and Beef Mince

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake w/1% milk

Total Calories: ~2625

Tomorrow I have rowing training and I'm going to do my 6k Test Erg for selection. That night I have a going away party for one of my good friends (he's a soccer player and he's just got a contract with Empoli in Italy's Serie B) but I'm not going to drink.

Thought for the Day:
"Without Struggle, we would never be forced to exceed our limits, to stretch ourselves, to achieve our potential. We would never be forced to search for the best within ourselves-and find it. Without Struggle, we would never know the kind of people who we really are."

Wednesday 26/11/08 - Day 87 (10 Days to Deadline)

Went to rowing this morning but due to the storm (2 weeks ago) it is still too dangerous to go on the water. We did a 50min ergo session instead.

4x 5' on (rate: 24, 26, 28, 26)
w/5' off (rate: 12,14,16,14)
1x4' on (rate 22)
1x1' on (rate 36)
1x5' off (rate 12)

then a warm down.

During the day I did my 6k test ergo for Queensland selections (might as well still do it even if I don't think I'll make the squad) and pull a 22:18.3
Not bad for a first attempt.

That night I go to a friend's house for his going away party (he has been offered a contract with Italian football team Empoli in the Serie B).
I don't drink (kudos for me) despite everyone else getting tanked. I only get half an hour of sleep though before I have to go to rowing coaching on Thursday morning. From there I go home to sleep, and get a solid 6 hours sleep in the middle of the day (is now 1.30pm on Thursday).

Food:
Breakfast:

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake w/full cream milk

Total Calories: ~2950, so just under.

So close to States now...

Thought for the Day:

Dinner:
Last night's Chicken Curry

Pre-Bed:

Needed a bit more, but as I'm coming up to states it's not as bad as it should mean I am securely on weight.

Tomorrow I'm doing my first row in the double with my partner for states, he's stroking it. Coach left it up to us and he wanted to stroke and I wasn't fussed so he's stroking it. Hope we go well.

Thought for the Day:
"Glory is in the Crew, not the individual"

Friday 28/11/08 - Day 89 (8 Days to Deadline)

Rowing this morning in the double. My partner is the same guy I row the pair with...

Well... I must say I am really, really suprised! And in a good way! He mightn't be the best sweep oarsman around but as a double (sculling) we hit it off straight away and get a really good rhythm, timing and balance. We do some good, hard pieces on the way home of a 16k row and generate some good boat speed. I reckon we could go alright, we'll need to spike the fitness up a bit but hopefully we should do fairly well.

Then I just have work all day... gay.

Food:
Breakfast:
8 weetbix w/1% Milk
4 eggs

Snack 1:
Protein Shake w/1% milk

Lunch:
100g Grilled Coral Trout

Snack 2:

Dinner:
Sweet potato, rocket, lettuce and tomato salad and a real beef, egg and cheese burger that the chef at work whipped up for me.

Pre-Bed
Protein Shake w/1% Milk

Total Calories: ~2600

Thought for the Day:
"And all the way, to guide their chime, with falling oars they kept their time"

good grief the toooo of u couls split a hair and serve it as a banquetr!! LOL!!!

my post should give you sometjhoign to work with,,,, spellin and grammar are for the anal!!!

anyhow--

great workouts and you are asoooo disciplined,,, you are going to do great!!!

I will try and read this more regualr so I can fiugure out soem of the termnology...

when you say singlr or duble do you mean- one guy in the boat and/or two in the boat?

when you train are you usually alone pout in the waer all nice and solitude and such?

Thanks a lot FF! That means a lot coming from someone as inspirational as yourself :)

There are (loosely speaking) 5 classes of boats

Single (or 1x) which is one person in the boat with two oars.
Double (or 2x) which is two people in the boat with two oars each.
Pair (or 2-) which is two people in the boat with one oar each.
Quad (or 4x) which is four people in the boat with two oars each.
Four (or 4-) which is four people in the boat with one oar each.
Eight (or 8+) which is 8 rowers in the boat with one oar each and one coxswain who steers the boat).

Pairs, Quads and Fours can also sometimes have coxswains in them as well (in which case they'd be marked as 2+, 4x(+) or 4+ respectively).

Normally I train in the single, and that is the type of boat I have just purchased, but I never train alone. I'm almost always training with a squad, where we will all be in singles and do the work together. However, my squad is almost exclusively Queensland or Australian representative rowers so I'm the odd one out (for now) and tend to spend most of my time at the back of the pack.

Having said that I'm moving up the field and this morning I held pace with the elite guys.

I have the advantage of being 3-4 years younger than most of them (i'm only 18) so I have time to improve and develop.

Yeah Todd, can you believe this guy is only 18? When Sam started posting here, if I hadn't read his age, I would have thought he was around 35 years old, already won tons of medals, and was rowing in the Masters class because he couldn't give it up ;)

Sam is one of the most dedicated athletes on this forum (if not THE most dedicated).

He blows me away every time I read his updates.

Saturday 29/11/08 - Day 90 (7 Days to Deadline)

Rowing this morning, but back in the (club) single, with most of the older members of the club at Head of the Yarra there isn't really any contest for club boats.

We do 30 (yes THIRTY) x 30" on 1' off at max effort...

Wow, i am more than shagged afterwards, I am totally and utterly spent. Imagine doing HIIT for 45 mins when you also have to be concentrating on balance and technique in the boat so that you dont fall out. Crazy...

I have a well deserved rest afterwards but in the afternoon head to the gym.

3x1000m Ergo (rate: 20, 26, 32)

4x (each side) Cable Woodchoppers
4x15 (my coach calls them Execution Squats but this calls them Choppers) with a 10kg M/B. Its an interesting exercise because it neither makes your quads or abs burn but do it properly and by the 3rd set you find you're whole body beginning to fatigue. Possibly also because my legs were already smashed by the row and ergos.
3x10 Incline Bench Press (working on explosiveness) @40kg
4x10 S/B Push Fly's
4x10 Curl and Press @20kg

Then did 20mins stretching.
Did a recovery swim and then a shower with 4x30"@hottest, 30"@coldest.

Feel good afterwards and not much soreness.

Food:
Breakfast
After that brutal workout I decide to treat myself to a low-fat milkshake and a ham and cheese croissant from the hugely popular local cafe 'King of Cakes'.

Snack 1:
Protein Shake

Pre-Ergo's:
170g Whole Wheat Pasta with tomato and basil sauce and beef mince

Post Gym:
Go to work and the chef whips me up another of those awesome beef, egg and cheese burgers he made me last night

Dinner:
Go out for dinner with the gf (more below) to a highly recommended Thai Restaurant... the food is actually fairly terrible. :(

Total Calories: ~2500 - really need to try and get this up for this last week so that I am fully energised, just try and hit that 3000 each day.

It was not a great evening to cap off a good day...

For starters the restaurant me and the gf went to was suprisingly bad given the recommendation I'd been given... but that was the least of it.

She told me that she's sick of playing second fiddle to rowing and that I never have time for her because I'm always training... the long and the short of it was that she broke up with me. I'm sure she could have picked a better time than a week out from states. I'm pretty dirty about it but not altogether suprised, I had a feeling something like this was coming. Still pretty cut up about it though.
Just got to throw myself into training and keep my focus for this last week...

I'm sorry to hear that your GF broke up with you. Use this pain to your advantage. It will serve you well at States if you channel it into your rowing.

You're very focused and determined, and you can only balance so much in your life. Your GF obviously wants more right now, so let her go. But I know she'll regret doing this in the future ;)

It's very difficult to have relationships when you are training. No non-athlete wants to date a somebody who goes to bed early on the weekends, doesn't drink alcohol, is always thinking about their next training session or competition, etc.

I'm not going to say it was easy for me. It wasn't. It hurt a lot. I got dumped by guys so many times, by the time I was 21, I told myself I wasn't going to bother dating unless another athlete asked me out. Fortunately that happened. That relationship was much better because we both understood the commitment level and made the most of our time together, which wasn't that much. But if you love somebody, you make it work.

From my perspective, relationships should be more about the quality of the time spent together, not the quantity of time spent together.

The thought for the day is extremely apropos, Sam. Believe in your heart that this is the right thing for you right now.

Sam don't fret the breakup too much. she's just a girl and she doesn't understand your commitment to rowing. if it was meant to work you' still be in it with her.

Now you get to have some fun on the few days you go out to enjoy yourself.

girls are stupid, throw rocks at them. :D

Great thought for the day dutes!

stay focused

maybe she will end up with some T.V. video game loser deeekweed! thatt's what most peeps are.

Sunday 30/11/08 - Day 91 (6 Days to Deadline)

No training today but I have work from 9am-9pm. Its a fun day at work, but I feel pretty **** the whole day anyway. I'm glad I don't have training today because I don't think I would have handled it well. I've just got to keep focussed for this last week, then I can have some time off at christmas to worry about it...

Food: Under

Breakfast:
8 weetbix w/1% milk

Pre-work:
Protein Shake w/1% milk

Lunch:
Just nibbled at food, mainly calamari, while I was at work, I don't get a break till 5pm

Dinner:
10 Tiger Prawns (fresh and delicious) and grilled sea perch with a bean salad.

Pre-Bed
Protein Shake w/1% milk

Total Calories ~2300-2400
Under but I wasn't doing much so probably not too bad.

A fairly dodgy day all round really. Tomorrow I'm in the double again. I will be better.
Depart in 4 days, States in 6 days... I will be ready

Monday 1/12/08 - Day 92 (5 Days to Deadline)

50 minute piece all up. legs hurt like a mofo.

4x15 Weighted Execution Squats @10kg
4x12 Roman Chair Leg Raises

In the afternoon my boat arrives!!!!

And she is perrrrttyyy :valintines: :luxlove:

Take her out for a gentle paddle for about twenty minutes then give her a loving wash and put her away for the night... I'll see you in the morning
:action4:

Food: very bad :violent:

Breakfast:
2 Bananas

Post-Gym:
2 Bananas

Dinner:
Whole Wheat Pasta w/(my own special) Tomato, Basil, Garlic and Oregano Sauce, Beef Mince, Egg and Cheese (delicious, even if its not 'traditional' italian)

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake w/1% Milk

Total Calories: ~1500 tops... way underneath what I need. On the flip side I weighed in at 69.8 so perhaps being a bit under for this week won't hurt too much in keeping me securely under weight.... on the other hand it was just a poor effort by me, i just didn't feel hungry at all during the day.

Tomorrow I am going for my first proper row in my scull, so excited :D
Also got a session with the fitness coach and I know he's going to hammer me, I hope he does though. When I've joined in the work with the elite guys this last week and a half I was terrified I was goign to find myself massively lagging in fitness, but I haven't. I'm behind them sure but not by much, the work I've been doing of my own accord, away from the squad (seeing as we never did any work when I was rowing in that bloody four) has paid big dividends and although the race work hurts like a slut (... just let it be Sam...) I still feel strong, fit and powerful. I'm looking forward to racing... I probably will be right up to about 300m into the first race when I'll think 'Why the **** did I come back to this stupid sport!' :boxing_smiley:

Really can't wait to get up there and give it a go. The other big news of the regatta is that my old school is sending a contingent to the state titles this year for the first time ever (we had competed at the school level states and nationals but had never sent crews to contest open age or U23 events before, for obvious reasons) which means I will be competing against the best athletes of my old coach. Be good to see him, and the others (who I was and am friends with) but also would be fantastic to beat them.

Note: there's no animosity toward either my old coach, teammates or the younger athletes of my old coach. I just want to show how far I have come (I was the bottom ranked of our crew at school that won the nationals)

Thought for the Day:
