Journey, Not A Destination

hey!

hope your saturday is going well!!

i have a favor to ask of you... (surprise, surprise! feels like i am always asking you stuff! :))

will you please, please read the post i did today in my journal and answer the question that's at the end?

i would also just like your input on my workout in general.

thanks!!

Hahaha. This made me LOL. Thanks Mal.

my pleasure :) good to know i have a skill :D

I've been searching for the last half hour for your posts on fish oil so you don't have to repeat yourself on the subject again (even though it seems like a subject worth being repeated, haha). I do have one question though. What is a sensible amount to take for someone that is losing weight as opposed to gaining? I'm not inactive but I can't say that I'm very active either. I ask mainly because I read something about Omega-3 or fish oil being dangerous at a high dosage (I recall something about bleeding o_O). I am definitely going to start using this supplement now but don't want to overdo it.

Thanks for the invaluable information!

EDIT: I couldn't find anything on the fish oil danger I mentioned. I may have been thinking of something else entirely.

thank you so much, steve!

i still want to run occasionally (just to prove to myself that i can), but now i know i need to focus more on the elliptical. and the weights, of course! :)

Sorry to post again, but I called my local GNC (I work literally right next door to one :D) and this is available:

I've found similar online for cheaper, but I'll pick up a bottle locally since shipping and Paypal transfer time means it'll be a couple weeks possibly before it arrives. As far as I can tell, it is exactly what I'm looking for.

Also, surely you can get stronger while in a deficit. Muscle growth is not the only contributing factor to increases in strength. In layman's terms, your body learns to get stronger. I don't think I need to get into the science of it unless you want to hear it.
Im keen on hearing it, ive been working with weights since the beginning and when i stopped it made a huge difference in the amount of weight loss as well as overall feeling (energy levels etc). I think because it burns so few calories compared to cardio a lot of people give it a miss, which is somewhat sad. To have the muscle to do things you never used to be able to gives you the motivation to keep going, it also makes cardio easier to go harder :)

Wow, my legs are dead.

Killer workout and added an exercise I have never done before, which always shocks the muscles.
Hehe My back is somewhat the same from a hard core 2 hour session shoveling yesterday. I never realized how little i used those muscles until now, i think ill add some new weight exercises to keep them up after this :D

good morning steve :) man i wish it was morning here hehe

i was again starting to read through your diary hehe but gave up on page 20. i'll need to find some time to continue since you have some really great advice and you're a great motivator. i posted my questions in the harsh truth so i'm not going to bug you in here :D (for now lol)
anyway, just wanted to wish you a great sunday :D

Lena

I did not see how much EPA and DHA are in each capsule. I recommend 180 EPA, 120 DHA

Wishes, in terms of actually gaining strength with actually hypertrophy, or as I said your body learns to get stronger, the gist of it is this:

Our CNS activates electrical impulses that filter their way through various neurons until it reaches the muscle which is in question for action. Once it reaches the muscle, it stimulates a lot of processes. Basically, calcium is released from the sacroplasmic reticulum, which finds its way to various proteins within the sarcomere, namely troponin. This clears the pathway for the main contractile units of the muscle to bind, these being the proteins, actin and myosin.

As you progress through a program, especially in the early stages, the motor unit (neurons + fibers which the electrical impulses innervate) become more efficient. Namely, increased motor unit recruitment and rate coding occurs. This is, you learn to activate more motor units over time and you learn to produce more action potentials (electrical impulses) over time, respectively, leading to increased force production. Hence, you are stronger without necessarily being more muscular.

As for weight training not burning many calories.... I beg to differ. Sure, it may not burn as many as you had done a session of cardio, which is a very generalized assumption within itself. Howeve, who cares about acute energy expenditures? The aftermath of a bout of intensive resistance training is much more calorie expensive than a bout of steady state cardio, and this is what matters when it comes to weight loss. Total energy balance. Not energy balance by the hour.

Thanks for the kind words. And you don't have to read through this journal. :p If you have questions, ask!

Haha, I don't know about this being the place to be, but I appreciate the kind words. I don't post much on the weekends, but I am sure I will see you around the forum!

Take care, and welcome to the forum. :)

Have a great day Steve! It's beautiful here in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and I'm about to go for a long run in the forest. The only issue is not tripping on tree roots and avoiding the banana slugs! Talk to you later!

Yes, it is a busy Sunday and it feels GREAT! The weather is amazing :)

Got my run in this morning and now Megan and I are going hiking in the arroyo to find the GeoCache :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
