Journey, Not A Destination

It felt like a freezer too, that I promise you.

My best quote from me as I sat in that room with my bare feet hovering over the ice:

"Gordy, are you fucking retarded? If we stay in here overnight there is no amount of snuggling that is going to keep us alive in this death trap. We're walking straight down this fucking mountain in the dark. I'll use my pack as a sled if I have to."

No lie, lol.

pity you didnt get that on video :D:D

Mind you, if you guys had died, and that video of gordy that you do have was his only legacy left behind, that could have been really funny :)

We're planning some small hikes this summer with some less qualified people who want to join us.

Then next year we're planning on doing doing Mt. Washington again but in the dead of winter.

One year I thought it would be a great if we planned a backpacking trip to Half Dome. We invited a bunch of friends and family and gave them detailed instructions on what to bring. We normally hike about 6 miles uphill to Little Yosemite Valley and then camp over night, ascend to the top the next morning, and then return to camp and pack up and exit.

Well come the day of we all drive in, park, and start putting on our packs and hitting the trail. A few minutes in and we were already having issues. I guess some folks didn't realize how difficult it was to hike uphill on a uneven dirt path with HEAVY packs on. Some people way overpacked...bringing a heavy ass 10 man tent for 1 person...don't know what they were thinking.

Anyway to cut to the chase, we barely made it down the next day. Some people wanted to leave their packs behind, others could barely walk and had to be carried...it was ugly. I think one of the highlights though was one of the girls pulling out an electric toothbrush and a curling iron in a campground w/no running water and no electricity. Another girl packed 3 pair of jeans for an overnight trip! Hilarious!!

Have fun w/those inexperienced folks and take it easy on them!

... though I think Ohio takes the cake as one of the most annoying regional accents...

At least you didn't say Michigan. :D

My Aussie H is constantly pointing out the pecularities of the accents around us here. It's fucking annoying as hell. It's not as though Aussies don't have their own odd ways of speaking. I'm sure Wishes can point out several, being such a close neighbor. :D

Tales from the cold side! lol Some of my favorite shows are "I Survived..." and "I Shouldnt Be Alive."

Your survival story could be on a show. Lucky to have found that shack. The pictures were crazy, it looked like a freezer storage locker.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I'm beginning to think Steve is a lot like that guy on Man vs Wild on the Discovery channel. That guy is one sick bastard. And the fact that Steve wants to climb Mt. Wash again--only in the dead of winter makes me think Gordy's not the only one who's "fucking retarded." :sifone:

Depending on how far you like to travel for your hikes... and not that you need my suggestions :)

Years and years and years ago - in Woodstock NY (the woodstock of the music festival) parts of the Catskills are great day climbs - there's one in particular that about a mile or three up the mountain -there are the remains of a hotel that burned down in the 20s or 30s but th shell is still there and when you reacht he top of the moutain - the views are spectacular...

New hampshire also has a bunch of easier climbs in the presidential range.. and some even smaller tha that..

there are some illinois accents that get on my ever lovin' last nerve.. we've got some doozies of regional accents in this country we do.. most are usually understandable - the only place I ever needed a translaor was when I was in the UK in the midlands region - I still have no freakin' clue what they were saying mos of the time -even worse when they were drinking

Hahahaha.... I'd shit myself laughing if I saw someone pull out electric bathroom appliances on one of my trips. In truth though, I know exactly how they felt, wanting to leave their packs behind. Mine was full of the essentials that saved my life, but I still hated every single ounce.

Shit, I thought about leaving myself on those mountains a few times. Just lay down and go in peace, lol.

Uphill hiking is beyond brutal.

I train in the 4-6 rep range most of the time with my weight training.

On my trip, I was asked to take 50,000 lunges with 60 lbs strapped to my back.

We're talking about doing one in NY... the adirondacks I believe.

Hard ain't the word.

Impossible is more like it. At least that's one your mind starts to tell your body.

You could go with a theme

bear mountain I don't think is overly challening but it's part of the applaccian trail - and is really pretty country -not far from the usma at west point...

That looks real nice.

Though, everything in that article says it's an ass-kicker. I'm down for that... I was thinking anything less wouldn't be as fun for me now. But some of the people we are planning on taking I'd worry about. I suppose they'd have to suck it up. Or turn back to the car. God knows I'm not turning back.

Ithink the article is written for city folk who's idea of mountain climbing is climbing the steps to get to the 1 and 9 train :D

the bonus is that it gets you another leg of the AT -people will spend months of thier lives hiking the entire thing... it's an accomplishment.
