Journey, Not A Destination

Weekend update

So this was a very nice weekend. The weather was heavenly.

Friday I went to Gordy's and we shot videos until 3 in the morning. We have about 60-70 done now, but only a handful of them edited and on the website. I think we need to slowdown the shooting and spend more time editing.

Then we woke up at 7am to have a meeting at the bank. He said they opened at 8. But no, that was just the drive through... so we had to wait around forever!

After that, I came home and watched my little cousin. I took him to walmart to buy a toy. I told him he could pick out anything. Of course he picked out a power wheels hummer that was as big as my freaking car and cost 400 dollars, lol. I realllllllyyyy wanted to get it for him but Krista put her foot down. His mother would have been pissed. So he ended up going with a remote control car, which he loved. Then I took him to the playground and played with him until he was literally sleep walking, lol.

Yesterday I went and drove some golf balls.... I'm improving. I also went for a bike ride.

This morning, before work, I woke up bright and early and went fishing with my partner.

I could take this weather year round I tell you.

sounds like a great weekend...

man are you gonna be in trouble when you have some kidlets of your own... good thing Krista is responsible :)

How exactly are you shooting your videos, Steve?

Like, for example, when you are shooting a bench press video. How will you show the client in the video to maintain proper neck, wrist, feet, elbow, knees, and back positioning? There are a lot of little details in this lift alone that a single quick video likely won't cover. How will you cover them for online clients?

I'm just curious. ;)

Obviously you'll never match what a good in-person trainer can provide. So we do our best by explaining each exercise in as much detail as possible verbally, explaining the mental cues that should be in your mind, what not to do, and type a text description below the video. What more can be done, really.

We don't do all that for simple things, like some of the static stretching, but the more complex exercises will be very descriptive.

Our bodyweight squat video, for instance, is 3 minutes long. The barbell one, which we haven't done yet, will be much longer.

If someone just can't 'get it' by way of the instructional video we have, we'll provide custom videos and hopefully the client will be able to send us videos too.

Last resort will be to send them to an in-person trainer.

My take is pretty simple though... I've got a good bit of experience with regards to how likely you are to find a decent trainer in a gym and the online client is more than likely better off with a sound trainer over the net than what they're likely to 'pull' from the in-person pool, IMO.

hummmm
AC/DC's Highway to Hell :)

I'm on the highway to hell.
No stop signs, speed limit,
Nobody's gonna slow me down.
Like a wheel, gonna spin it.
Nobody's gonna mess me round.

No wait - that's the wrong song...
Tom Cochrane: "Life is a Highway"

Life is a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind . . .
Life is a highway
I want to ride it all long
If you're going my way
I want to drive it all night long.

Or wait -maybe AC/DC has the right idea...

Rock on young man.. :D Have fun on this road trip :D

That's excellent news! I didn't realize your mother was obese... what did you have her do? Is she really 400 lbs?

Well, she was 390ish at the doc's office last week, so pretty close. She went around the circuit at my gym--did 7 of the 9 machines, a few of them twice. She didn't due any of the walking in place boards in between machines, though. It wasn't the full 30min workout--only about 10-15 min, but that's all she could do. Baby steps. She broke her femur really badly nearly 4 yrs ago and has limited range of motion in her leg in addition to the limited range of motion due to her weight. She uses a walker to get around, so this is a great start for her. She's also cut back on her eating. I'm really pleased that's she's finally making some healthy changes. :)

Got up earlyto go fishing eh? That's probably when I went to bed. :D

I think I'm going to send my H to your website once it's up. His back has been killing him lately. He thinks his back muscles are weak. Do you think planks would help strengthen them? His abs could use some work, too. :D When do you expect the website roll out?

I watched the Stars/Sharks game last night. That was a long one--4OTs! HOpe the Stars are still tired when they play the RW's Thursday. :sifone:

So is PA excited to have both NHL teams playing for the Eastern Conference title? Are the Flyers/Penguins a big in-state rivalry?

Disclaimer: If I was really concerned about this -I'd find a doctor and make an appointment - this was more observational than anything else -and probably means that I'm doing something wrong... but what's new.

I was doing bench presses yesterday with my olympic bar - no weights on the bar (yes, I'm a wimp but am ok with that) and I was on about rep 6 -when I noticed my heart rate monitor -which i hadn't turned off from being at the gym -had spiked to 213.. I sat up and it almost immediately went back down to 89.... (my resting heart rate is around 68-70)

Went for round two... and it did the same thing...

Is your heart rate supposed to raise when you're lifting weights? I do breath correctly -or as correctly as I possibly can I think.. and when I'm on the treadmill - my heart rate rarely gets above 160... 130-150 is pretty much average...

This is very cool to hear Kimberly.

And you're right, something is better than nothing. Shit, I forget if I mentioned this or not, but I was working with an obese woman who had very limited mobility. She also didn't leave her house. I started her on walking around her apartment (which was small) every hour for 5 minutes, very simple band exercises from a seated position in her living room, and leg exercises where she would slide paper plates around on a tile floor. Start out extremely gradually is the best bet with obese people. I mean extremely.

One of the most common problems is starting too fast or much and they burn out faster than anyone else.

I do wish her all the best... hopefully she'll stick with it.

Yuppers. :)

Planks are a great core movement.

But it could really be anything. It's isolated to his lower back only?

Does he like reading? I have a great book if he does.

Yea I saw that.... that's a LOT of hockey!

Not that I'm aware of. I'm not a huge sports buff though so I wouldn't know either way.

You're heart rate will elevate, but shouldn't spike like that. You are breathing correctly you're sure?

Did you feel your heart racing?

I wasn't holding my breath...

I would have chalked it up to a glitch - (i do have an irregular heart beat that the HRM has gone there only once before - but I don't ever feel it when it does) becuase it's for seconds... however i'm not sure about the glitch this time becaue i could repeat it when i did it again....

No matter -i'm too mean to die.. besides Idon't have that kind of luck - I just wasn't expecting a bump in heart rate from laying down and lifiting a weight..

I think it jumped almost immediately -it didn't gradually go up - it was at about 90ish - then I noticed my wrist and it said 213... When I put the weight back -and sat up - it was back down to 89...

Second round iwas pretty much the same thing -it didn't go from 90 to 120 to 150 to 180 - just up to 213 then back...

i think that's what you asked.

How heavy is that weight for you?

Meaning, are you able to lift is smoothly for your goal reps or is it hard?
