Journey, Not A Destination

I've read more about this guy... he makes an argument (and a list of things that, including it causes cancer, which is what annoys me) that aerobic exercise is bad for you. He is all about the anerobics like HIIT. I'd like to link his blog but it's all about selling shit, the guy is impressive for 55 and has a client base that is impressive... you should google "Steve Maxwell top 10 reasons" or something like that. I felt angry reading this shit.

It doesn't sound like it wouldn't even be worth my try. Anyone that says cardio is bad for you is a moron. Sounds like another retard who read a few of the studies on HIIT and used falty logic to believe it's the be all end all of training.

It's not.

In fact, there are many instances when it would be counter-productive to use HIIT.
 
Steve- speaking as a new member here. Mal is 100% correct, it is because you have no issue telling people that they are wrong. A lot of people do not want to be told this. Also there is the 'epenis' to remember. You have a crap load of posts, giving you a very large 'emember'.

Also, so much advice is given in the posts that really if you search the stickies and your journal you usually find what you are looking for without having to ask a question- resulting in views.

I hope that's the case!

Sometimes I think of all the time and information I posted on here and I think about how it could fill a pretty good book at times.

Finally, some of the conversations that take place in here are generally interesting reading- especially to a new member. The curiosity of what is in a 500+ page thread draws people like a car crash.

Just thought you might like to observations from a new member.

Haha... I didn't do a lick of work this w/e nor did I make it to the bank. I fished the entire weekend. Didn't get home until 9 last night and I just got home now, tonight. It turned out the one guy I really didn't feel like fishing with didn't go. It also turned out to be a very cool experience taking Jared's* little brother in his place. It was an emotional trip.

Jared = friend killed in car crash last year for those who don't know

I am definitely whooped though. I already called in sick tomorrow.

Tomorrow the diet starts. Hell day.
 
Yea, I caught a bunch of fish actually. No big ones which was disappointing but quite a few average ones. It was butt cold this morning though. So cold in fact, my line was freezing and the 'eyes' of my rod were turning into ice, no allowing me to reel in.

I'm glad that meeting with the gym manager went well. It sounds like you both can learn a lot from each other.

Being a night owl, I've never understood the allure of getting up at an hour that I frequently go to bed at so that I can sit in a boat or stand in a stream waiting for fish to bite....haha. But I know that lots of other people enjoy it immensely. :) That was cool that you were able to spend some time with Jerod's little bro. :)

On the trainers who don't know their head from their ass theme, a co-worker of mine recently dropped big $$ to join a local gym. The "trainer" there told her she should do an hour of weights and an hour of cardio 5 days a week. Keep in mind that my co-worker only needs to lose 20lbs, and has not exercised at all in ages, and hates to exercise. What do you think the chances are that she'll stick with that program?? I think it's better to start out slowly and work up to that. Also, her eating plan for her was basically to eat a granola bar in the morning, then some yogurt a few hours later. Then another granola bar and more yogurt every few hours etc. She never once talked about how many calories she should eat, carbs, protein or anything. I did what I could, but she already has barely gone to the gym. I think she might join mine so we can work out together. Don't know how that will go, though. I'm pretty sure that trainer says the same thing to all her clients. :rolleyes: I'm sure you'd rip her apart. My co-worker had a ton of unanswered questions, and was not keen on the yogurt/granola bar diet..lmao. I tried to help her with an eating plan that would be beneficial and
realistic for her at the same time. I also told her to ease into the exercise, as someone who hasn't done squat for ages doesn't need to work out 10hrs a week to see results. :willy_nilly:

It's a modified version of a protein sparing modified fast (PSMF). If you research it, it's basically a *gem* the medical community conjured up to make people lose the most amount of fat in the least amount of time, while negating one of the biggest downsides of 'starvation type' dieting.... that being muscle catabolism.

The modification comes per Lyle McDonald.... the best nutrition author out there right now in my mind.

It's probably the simplest diet ever. One of the toughest too. The last thing I'd want is everyone here running out and doing it b/c a) it can screw with your head and there are a lot of teeny boppers running around here already with borderline eating-disorders if you ask me and b) if you don't do things right, there's a real chance for a nasty rebound in weight gain.

But back to it being simple.....

Basically the docs said, the only thing someone really *needs* to eat in order to stay alive and healthy is essential nutrients (amino acids, EFAs, water, micronutrients (veggies)). Beyond that, you don't need much.

Really it's just eating 1.5-2 grams of lean protein per pound of lean bodies mass, veggies, and omega 3 fats.

So for me, my diet will look something like 4 meals per day. Each meal will have a handful of fish oil capsules, some fibrous veggies, and enough lean protein to total about 83 grams per meal (65ish grams per meal if I eat 5 meals per day).

That comes to roughly 1400 calories, not including the veggies. I'm actually lucky that I'm carrying around all the muscle I am. Small women I know who do this diet on occasion who aren't carrying that sort of muscle only eat around 400-500 calories per day!

Basically I'll be eating a ton of fish, chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, egg whites, protein powder, fish oil caps (10 per day), broccoli, celery, spinach, peppers, mushrooms, cucumbers, lettuce, asparagus, green beans, etc.

Boring, ya.

But it will get the job done quickly, which I'm looking for. Plus, I like screwing around with stuff like this.

Probably more than you were asking for.... but it's good for me to think it out on paper now since I've only been thinking about fishing the last couple of days and when I wake up tomorrow morning, I'm going to have to figure out what I'm doing.

Oh yea, and this will only last for 2 weeks or so. Anything more and too much 'bad stuff' would happen metabolically.

Yea, it's not for everyone, that's for sure. I grew up doing it and got really good at it.... so it's something I like to do. I used to get out around 100 times per year. Anymore, I'm lucky if I get out 10.

And yea, it was cool and sad about Jared. Aaron, his little bro, used Jared's fishing rod/reel, wore his vest and waders. Jared died a day or two after last using that stuff. Hell, the fishing line still had the last hook Jared tied on. And we started where Jared took his last cast while alive. So it was pretty emotional, but good.

Not at all, ive heard the word thrown around and some basic principles but that was a tad more detailed. I looked into it but understand fully how hard it would be.

I thought about doing something similar but its pretty darned hard when you have 4 kids + partner etc :)

How much will you loose in the 2 weeks do you think? or what are you aiming too ?
 
I'm not aiming for a specific number. I've never done the diet before so I'm not so sure what to expect personally. But over 10 lbs wouldn't surprise me. You lose a lot of fat considering the amount of time were talking.... but you also lose a shit ton of water.

That's one of the reasons why this diet can screw with your head. Key word being one.

Someone could lose 20 lbs on this diet in a very short period of time but gain back 12 as soon as they introduce carbs again. That can screw with those who focus solely on the scale, which is a majority of those around here. But the weight regain is to be expected. It's just water. You still lost 8 lbs of fat (in this particular example) which is damn impressive considering the short time frame.

Something I left out of my original description is I'll be drinking a ton of water.... probably over a gallon per day. I'll also be taking a multi vitamin, some calcium supps, some electrolyte supps. I was thinking about throwing an E/C* stack in there too to control metabolic slowdown and hunger but I'm not going to do that this route.

*E/C = ephedrine, caffeine stack
 
better you than me, reminds me of that sacred heart diet only with more meat (read: fun ... i love meat!)
Its almost impossible to get E/C here or anything with ephedrine. The druggies take it and make P out of it. I think Cold pills are the only thing with eph in it and you have to take in a drivers license to buy it and enter your details into a database.

Im a bit wary of low calorie stuff whilst im cycling, as my cycling does burn a crapload. Though if i havnt kicked those last few lb by winter i may hit you up for more details :)
 
Yea, I definitely wouldn't do it if you're cycling heavy. Training volume for me will be cut waaaayyyy back while I'm on this. I'll be doing no cardio and only 2 weight training bouts per week that are very brief and heavy. That's it.

So meal number 1 is knocked out. They aren't kidding with they say protein is the most satiating macronutrient! I'm stuffed. This diet will be a walk in the park if I feel like this after every meal. I know I won't though. I think the satiety stems from the fact that I've been starting my days off with a liquid breakfast for the last 6 months or so. My stomach isn't used to being stretched out by a bunch of food.

I am going to try and journal my journey through this diet in more detail than I usually do around here.

I'm not really planning my diet out. I know what I am 'aloud' to eat and I know what these foods contain in terms of protein. So I simply divide my total protein goal for the day into the number of meals I am going to consume each day and get my per meal protein amount. It comes to about 66 grams.

Breakfast was:

5 egg whites
1.5 servings of fat free cheese
1 scoop whey protein mixed in water
1 serving of green beans

is that what you'd normally eat or are you going for lower calories?

Egg white omelette with green beans and cheese filling?

If you're going for low calorie (and you certainly don't need dietary advice from me but...) Goat cheese is low calorie (70 calories an ounce) that's got aton of flavor and makes for a really nice egg white omelette with a bunch of heaping scoops of pico de gallo or salsa...

I was going to dice up a bunch of veggies to throw into the omelette but I wasn't interested. So I just scrambled the eggs and melted some cheese on them. I ate the green beans separately.

If you're going for low calorie (and you certainly don't need dietary advice from me but...) Goat cheese is low calorie (70 calories an ounce) that's got aton of flavor and makes for a really nice egg white omelette with a bunch of heaping scoops of pico de gallo or salsa...

The thing is I have never been one that needs things to taste good. Especially when following a short term diet.... I just whip something up quickly and scarf it down.

The cheese needs to be fat free.... not sure if goat cheese is, but I doubt it. As I said in the post where I explained the diet last night to Wishes, the idea of this diet is to intake only the essentials which happen to be enough lean protein, omega 3s, and veggies. That's it. So I need to use fat free foods. The only fats I'll intake are the 10 fish oil caps (oh yea, I had 2 of these at breakfast too) and the very little bit of fat found in my lean meat sources such as chicken and turkey.

No, this PSMF is just a temporary diet. My liquid breakfast is what I eat when I'm not following this temporary diet. It's what I enjoy. The egg/cheese omelette is what I'll be eating for breakfast during the PSMF only as it's not my favorite thing.

Don't get me wrong. I love me some tasty food. But when I get into full diet mode, I don't care about much.
