Jogger's Diary

Food and my husband

Risty - I hear what you are saying by not going crazy dining out with my husband when I return home!

By the way - we bought a house! It is adorable! Our neighbor is a cow! We are near the city, but surrounded by peaceful farms. I am looking forward to spending a lot of time cooking healthy meals in my beautiful new kitchen! We get to move in a few days after I arrive home. It was a weird weekend because after finals ended (with me pigging out on pizza and chocolate - ugh!). It started snowing hard and snowed all weekend. Mind you, this comes a few days after going to class in shorts and skirts. I also got sick - staying up late and eating poorly during finals week probably contributed. I spent the whole weekend rereading Harry Potter book 5 and talking on the phone with my husband about the house we bought.

Fortunately, I am feeling better and I am also losing the weight I gained during finals. I am not going anywhere near Harry Potter book 6 until I finish some packing!

Our neighbor is a cow!

I was just gonna scold you for calling your neighbor names :) then i realized it's probably a moo cow :) least I hope :)

Now cow tipping is a fun way to pass the time -just make sure its a cow your tipping and not a bull :)

I was confused at first too, I was thinking YAY on the house and then... OH NO on the cow thing... until I read later on and you were talking about an actual cow, lol.

Congrats on a house, that's so awesome! I want my own house so bad! Who knows if that'll ever happen

Good job on losing the weight you gained from finals!

Tee hee! I worried that might come off wrong, but couldn't think of any other name for it - it is a real moo cow!

The Sweetest Strawberry

Well, I have a real sweet tooth, but lately I have kept all sweets out of the house. Dessert is toast with jam or cinnamon sugar. Chocolates have left the cupboard. So... when I ate a fresh strawberry yesterday I was in heaven. It tasted so sweet and perfect in every way! I think I am more sensitive to the taste of sugar now. If I was consuming a high quantity of chocolates it might have tasted tart. In contrast, by keeping my sugar intake down, it tasted all the sweeter. Of course, this experience was followed by my departure to a BBQ in which there was a fire with smores and I had 2 chocolate hersheys squares at the party - but I doubt this will do much damage!

Confession

So I was raised Catholic and I never quite got away from the confession thing. I have lost 2 pounds since I joined the forum and I have been eating very healthy and I have been maintaining this weight loss. However, I must be totally honest. I haven't put in any real effort towards weight loss for a whole week now. It is just so much easier to have that snack of wheat thins or fruit so I never feel any hunger at all. However, I have already mentioned on this site that at this "set point" that I am at, I only seem to lose weight if I endure some mild and temporary feelings of hunger. If I want to see results on the scale at the end of this week, I am going to have to do more than pay lip service to my efforts at weight loss. That said, I am ready to move forward again and renew my efforts! And this includes drinking more water... I love all the sunshine, but I think it calls for an increase in my H2O intake. :)

Hey,

I was raised catholic too and so I understand this confession thing. About the whole needing to feel hunger to lose weight, that's just plain silly! I've lost 49 pounds and I've not ever had to feel hungry. If you're eating right and sticking to it you will lose the weight. If you add exercise to it like walking fast, running, cycling, etc you'll definately lose the weight as well. I have hit a plateau but I need to try harder in my efforts. But I have come a long way without needing to feel hungry to lose weight and I'm sure lots of other people on this forum can say the same thing. So just eat healthy and sensibly as well as exercise and you'll be just fine.

I did it! I lost another pound!

As noted above, I resolved to try a little harder with my diet and the scale has rewarded me. It read 131 lbs this morning, but I am going to count it as 132 lbs just to be safer. Hurray, I lost another pound! This is the break down for yesterday:

30 min jogging

Breakfast: Bowl of whole grain cereal with sliced strawberries
Lunch: Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
Dinner: 2 large bowls of "One Dish Broccoli, Brown Rice, Chicken Casserole" - topped with cheddar cheese... yum!

Hello Jogger!!
Great job on the weight loss lately. That's fantastic! Oh and congrats on the NEW HOUSE too, YEAH!!!! :jump: You mentioned a little back that you eat more when your hubby is around, WOO I know all about that one. My hubby is as fit as a fiddle and he eats like a horse, uggg it's hard sometimes being around that, and sometimes I cave and eat crap with him and I know I shouldn't, but I'm getting much better. The more you want the weight loss the easier it seems to me to stay away from those temptations. Your on the right track, keep it up my friend!

Totally agree with that -I've not once been hungry - it's really not a side effect of a lifestyle change :)

Recovering catholics like me are great at penance but it really doesn't need to be hunger :)

Argh!

Sorry for the delayed reply. I wrote a post yesterday and I lost my internet connection or something and it was just gone.

Kim: Thanks for the support. This is all going to get more difficult in only a few days time. My mom and I will be on the road for 3 days and I am a little worried about eating every meal out. There is Subway and more Subway...
Then there is the celebratory mood of arriving home and the temptation for my husband and I to eat out some more as all our cooking stuff will be in boxes until we can get unpacked and settled in our new home. Not to mention all the stuff you mentioned- the temptation of eating as much as he does! Only in this case, my husband is not "fit as a fiddle" - Lol! Love him dearly though...

I'll send this now before I lose it...

No hunger. no weight loss

I know you all are exactly right on. Hunger isn't necessary to lose weight. If I was patient enough to lose weight more slowly or better at spacing meals or snacks I could avoid the "hunger trap." I gotta tell you though I have little patience with the scale, snacking often turns into grazing and overeating for me, and increased exercise usually results in increased calorie intake for me.

Yesterday I tried snacking throughout the day and it was like, oh, now I will have a piece of toast, now how about just a small bowl of cereal, oh how about a banana, oh, how about more casserole and so on all day long!!!! :rotflmao:

I recall a semester in which I only tried to lose weight by increasing my exercise. It got me nowhere. I would think, "I burned so many calories during my workout today, I can have a bigger dinner!"

I realize this would be good for me to work on and all, but in the meantime, I found something that works... just with one nasty little side effect

Morning Jogger! I'm just curious, but are you writing any of your calories down for the day?? Maybe if you log them post on the fridge on a wipe off board, that might help keep you on track for the day and if you think you might be over, you can adjust by doing some form of excerisise to burn those few extra. It is hard to get adjusted to eating right, that was my BIG down fall at the beginning, but just take it slow, and one day at a time. Also, maybe you can find alternative snacks that both YOU and YOUR HUBBY enjoy together, that are low calorie so you won't feel bad if he's eating something you shouldn't. Just a suggestion of course. I found these NEW Wheat Thins, and they are Veggie flavored, OH MY GOSH, they are awesome and my hubby likes them too, you can have about 14 chips (wheat thins) for 110 calories I believe, I"m good after about 7 or 8, I like to slice small amounts of jalapeno cheese and eat that with them. They are not thick like a normal wheat thin, they are airy and crisp like a chip. Also, do you like carrots?? I take a bag and peel the outside off, then take a container fill with water and drop them into it and put in the refridge. When your hungry take one out and munch on it, they are cold, crisp, and refreshing that way and are already peeled so quick to grab, (easy access is always good) hmmm, I also incorporate a lot of canned beans into my daily meals. They are high in fiber and filling! I use either Black beans or Ranch style beans both low calorie for 1/2 C I usually throw some light cheese on them and wrap them up in a small flour tortilla, quick, filling, fast!! these are just some suggestions for quick stuff that doesn't take a lot of prep and time. I'll try to think up some more for you. Well, I've taken up enough of your diary. I'll check later gator! Have a good day!
Kim

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I tried just increasing exercise and I thought the very same thing. The whole... I just burned so many cal's so it's ok to eat this! Basically it gets you nowhere unless you change your diet too. I realized that after a while and just gave up completely because I wasn't ready to give up the food I loved and change that part of my life. I'm glad that one day it hit me and I decided to finally change things.

One thing about snacking is to not think of doing it throughout the day but having maybe set times to do it. Like breakfast at 8, snack at 10, lunch at 12, snack at 2 or 3, supper at 5 or 6, another snack at 8 if you want. If you stick to eating like that, every 2-3 hours then your hunger won't ever grow to be unstoppable and you won't over snack either. Plus if you plan ahead what to eat and calculate it on fitday then you can see that your cal's are good enough and that snack more often would just make you overdo it in cals. Planning ahead is so important and I know I need to start planning my suppers cause that's where I blow it. Hopefully that helped you some!

Thanks for the great advice!

Kim: You are so right about carrots, wheat thins and beans! I had black beans with dinner and the other two things are in my kitchen right now. I have never tried the vegatable wheat thins. I totally want to buy those for a road trip snack and try them out. I create my own recipes and cook from scratch a lot which makes tracking calories a bit rough, but I could put a calorie limit on my snacks and just track that - to prevent the whole overgrazing thing I mentioned. :) My mom saw my husband the other day and she told me he looked leaner. I guess hearing about my weight loss progress has helped motivate him too. Awesome!

Risty: I am glad to hear someone else knows what I am talking about with the whole exercise-calorie limbo. Good idea with the set snack times!

So I stepped on the scale this morning after my jog and it read 130 lbs! I am counting it as 131 lbs because of water loss while working out. I am totally psyched to have lost another pound. Woo hoo! I had my dance recital today and it went really well. I didn't make a single mistake and there was a great turnout for the show. I'm having a garage sale tomorrow, my mom arrives in town on Monday, and I am moving on Tuesday. My oh my it is so busy right now!

Great job on the dance recital!! way to go!! And good job on getting that jog in as well. Your doing so good, stick with it!! YEAH ON THE LOST POUND!!! :jump:

My long absence

Okay, those vegetable wheat thins are really good. Everyone should try them! Well, I did gain weight on the car ride home and during the whole move in process. I was up to 138 pounds and now I am around 135. So all that weight lost since joining the forum is back on. :( However, I haven't been giving it my full attention so I am not too discouraged. Also, if I hadn't lost weight to begin with I would probably be closer to 140 lbs right now. I tend to get back on the band wagon here. I have jogging partners on Wednesdays and Fridays and possible waterskiing (when the sun comes out) lined up for Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am at the library studying right now (well, actually writing this post - tee hee!) and there is no kitchen to wander into and start snacking. It is difficult dieting when my husband contributed chips, frozen pizza pockets and other such stuff to our kitchen when we moved in together but we are getting through that stuff and soon it will be gone. As a side note, I love my new house! It is adorable! I love being home with my family nearby and old friends from high school. Life is good! Hope to check in with the forum more reguarly again. Hope everyone is well.
