IUD birth control screwed me over. so here i am.

reading all those women's posts was amazing. i had never linked it before but my depression, anxiety attacks and major mood swings all started when i got my iud. before that nothing would phase me, i was such a calm and centred person. it was my inability to cope with those emotional changes that led to my eating disorder and 40kg weight gain. iwas thinking of getting it removed because i am sick of the painful and unpredictable periods. this has just confirmed my decision !

Funny how some people just get informed and use common sense, and others don't.

And as said, it doesn't really matter if the IUD or something else is the reason for weight gain, if people believe it's the IUD and get it taken out, that will do the trick for them, so everybody's happy.

uhm no.

if i have cancer, and drink water, convincing myself that the water will heal my cancer, does not guarantee that it will.

chill out. it's not that serious.

i never said that everyone gains weight with the iUD.

but do some research, go on forums, there's no way that its happening to thousands of women and that we all stopped eating correctly, or that none of us did enough exercise. think about that. You're making yourself sound like such a fool.

talk to a doctor, one you know personally, whos not getting paid to stick this shit inside you. maybe he'll tell you how many women complain about the weight, anxiety, depression, and everything else. OH and he might even tell you how all these go away just a few weeks after the IUD is out.

but hey, its all in their mind :)

You'd be surprised what the human mind is capale of.

Did you check with all these women and found out which IUD they exactly have? Did you check if there were no other reasons that could have possibly contributed to their weight gain?

I said several times that certain types of IUDs CAN cause weight gain. If you want to have a go at me, at least take the time to read properly.

I have spent nearly 6 months researching IUDs before I made the decision to have it put in. I was told about all possible side effects, and picked the one that seemed right for me. I DID my research.

So if I come across as a fool to you or not really doesn't bother me, because I studied the facts. Research, clinical studies and so on. Forums are totally subjective, and a lot of people will not tell you the full story.

All of the above said, it doesn't really matter, because I could talk until I'm blue in the face and you'd still insist that the IUD is the root of all evil. Maybe for you it is, who knows? *shrugs*

In any case, I'm out of here. It's another one of those threads where people just want to get a confirmation that what they think is right, and aren't interested in actually looking critically at it, or accept that there is more than one way of looking at it.

Oh well...more power to you. Hope removing the IUD will have the result you hope for. Have a nice life.

Thanks :) that's what we were hoping. That you'd "get out of here" :):):).

Oo and yes, most of the women on that forum are complaining about the COPPER IUD.

BLANCITA: How long have you had yours removed?

I removed my fake hormone IUD a year ago. My doctor is currently checking my hormone levels. I'm wondering if perhaps the fake progesterone hormone screwed up my natural system? Or my hormones may be waining as I am turning 41 soon (eeeeeek!). My metabolism just isn't the same as it used to be and I'm trying to figure out why.

I think that different forms of Birth Control, Affect people differently. SOME people won't have side effects at all, so it's hard to imagine others having such difficulty....but that is true for me. My IUD, I wished it would work so badly, I had no idea of the side effects, didn't really think it would be different than the pill, which I had taken for years. It wasn't for Birth Control for me, My husband had his vasectomy, but it was for helping with horrible periods. So my alternative would have been surgery...I hoped this was the answer, and maybe if I was not into my life changing time, I wouldn't have even noticed, because I never weighed myself. But while trying to lose, working out for 1 hr a day, eating right, and gained 8lbs in a week and a half..... I HAD MINE OUT, I dropped 9lbs in two DAYS!!! HONESTLY, IT AFFECTS everyone differently. BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. Let us know how it works out for you.

I agree with San, there are no hormones in the copper IUD.. no proof scientifically that it causes weight gain.. they would have to put that inthe side effects if it did when they first tested it... women DO change as they get older.. I am having a very hard itme losing my wieght.. whenI was younger it was easier.. and I notice that I keep it on longer now.. I do not have an IUD right now.. I just had a baby.. but will be getting it back for sure.. the copper IUD beats taking hormones.. and the copper effects the sperm.. it make sit "retarded" so it cant get you pregnant.. it doesnt really make you think your pregnant.. the copper just effects you.. "like magnets effect electrical equipment" making it much much harder for hte egg to get fertalized... if you have an IUD with hormones then that is probably your culprit... or could be.. if you have a copper IUD then it has nothing to do withyour wieght gain.. and youll be sorry after getting it taken out, and not lose any weight, maybe you should consider other things in your life before taking it out and taking that chance of getting pregnant... or find a BC that WILL help.. but you wont know that until youve tried them.. they all effect people differently.. luckily there IS a BC out there likethe copper IUD that doesnt have hormones for people like me who cant have those extra hormones. :) just MOP

no, i have the COPPER iud. not the mirena, which is the one with the hormones.

and although copper releases no hormones, while it is in the body, it mimics estrogen.

so its like you're taking a high estrogen level pill, i guess.

I've got the Merina IUD, with hormones, and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. For the one without the hormones there is absolutely nothing that would make you gain weight, so I don't quite understand that.

The one with the hormones can make you gain weight in some cases, but not to the degree described by the OP. I never heard that the IUD would make your body think it's pregnant either, that's not how it works. The coil causes the release of substances in your body which destroys sperm and eggs, making a pregnancy next to impossible, and that's all it does. It doesn't make you store fat or retain water at all, I have no clue why a doctor would tell you something like that.

I would check into a few other directions to make sure that there isn't a different reason for the weight gain and/or inability to lose it.

I actually started losing weight after my coil was inserted.

+1 I've lost 30+lbs while on Mirena. I think most ppl see birthcontrol as an easy excuse for weightgain :toetap05:

hm, if it was just an "excuse", and if it would be impossible, it wouldnt be listed as a possible side effect on its website.

this is all about hormones, if you have alot of hormone A , and not so much hormone B and get mirena which is hormone B and they balance out, youll be fine.

if you have hormore A and B, and getting mirena, or whatever else in increass one of them, your body can react crazy because they arent balanced.

birth control can make you gain weight, or lose weight.

be emotionally stable, or an emotional wreck, it just depends on the individuals body, hun.

Iud

A woman's body is not tricked into thinking it's pregnant with an inserted IUD. If it was, an egg wouldn't be released, and the lining of her uterus wouldn't shed resulting in a monthly period. Think about it. It is not known precisely how it works. It is thought the IUD somehow prevents the egg from attaching itself to the uterine wall. Some say copper is a factor but, then again, some IUD'S are made of plastic.

New here.

Hey guys, this is my first post..

So about a month ago, I was at the clinic for a regular checkup when I was told that I shouldn't be taking Alesse birth control (contains both Estrogen and Progestin) because I have a history of aura migraines. Taking medication containing Estrogen raises the risk of strokes for aura migraine-prone people like me.

Anyways, I have switched to Micronor which only contains Progestin .. I am considering switching to an IUD soon.

Do you guys think I'm in the clear for the weight issues since I have already been taking Alesse/Micronor without any problems?

Thanks!

"Estrogen Dominance is a condition where the estrogen in our bodies is not balanced by progesterone. In other words, we have far too much estrogen compared to progesterone.

It is important to understand that these two hormones oppose one another. In women estrogen is responsible for building the womb lining every month, while progesterone is responsible for the shedding of the womb lining (menstruation). Estrogen increases body fat while progesterone helps us use fat as energy. Estrogen increases blood clotting and progesterone normalizes blood clotting. The list goes on and on."

so if estrogen increases body fat, and copper mimics estrogen when it is in the body, then it increases your body fat.

is it really that difficult.

the copper could either balance out your hormone levels, and make you lose weight and feel good. but it can also make your hormones go out of control and cause to gain weight and feel insane.

just like the pills, some work for some women, others dont.

i have friends who on the same pill, have complelety different results.

I had the IUD for a year. Then I began having pregnacy symptoms. My hormones were insane. I didn't have any issues with weight gain. I lost my 1st 40lbs lost while I had my IUD. So as far as the weight gain I don't know how it could make you gain weight, but some people say that it can't make you feel pregnant and YES it can because I did. I switched to a very low estrogen pill and I feel much better. All I know is that I hated my IUD. I am so glad they removed it in december.

Everyone is different, what works for some women dones't work for others that why you need to experiment with birth control. When I was on the pill I gained lots of weight. I'd like to land the blame solely on the pill but if I think about it, I was in a relationship where we stayed in a lot, cooked big meals and went out to eat alot - possibly another way of explaining the weight gain... When I'm single, I think alot harder about what I eat and I'm more likely to spend time out in the gym or dancing in clubs.

I now have a plastic/copper IUD. I've lost 30lbs since it was put in. yes I do get much heavier periods and they last longer but I think its slightly unwise to blame a massive 60lb gain on the non hormone IUD.

Hi guys,

Just clocking in for an IUD update. I had the copper IUD for about 2 years and recently reached the point where I just couldn't take it any more. My periods either wouldn't come or would come every 2 week or last 2 weeks, I always (embarassing!) had a bad smell down there, terrible pmt that lasted weeks before my period came. My periods were so painful and unpredictable that I had to have it out!

About a month later and the results are...

No weight loss. Not that I expected it at all, my weight gain was down to an eating disorder which is stil present so i'm kinda stuck with that for a while.

BUT

I got a jaw line! Almost immediately the puffiness around my face dissapeared and my jawline became much more distinct.

My belly went down. I must have been incredibly bloated on the IUD because within a couple of days my belly looked a lot less poky outy (the scientific term...) and my trousers sat more comfortably. As I said, this wasn't weight loss, no chance, just some serious debloatifying (also the scientific term...).

So to sum up, getting my IUD out wasn't lifechanging, I didn't drop 100lbs by the next day, but it did have some positive effects on the way I look and feel and that can only be a good thing!

So along with a whole whack load of other things...I have gained weight, I did start taking Yasmin when I was 20. For birth control, as well as acne <(that didn't do much), for keeping my period regular, and less pain. It could have been that I just happened to start growing breasts at that time, or I could have had actual weight gain from how I ate <(which was poor) But along with than being put on anti-depressants/anxiety in one about 1 year and a half later,(for about 2 1/2 years where a lot more weight came in the picture) I always heard ppl talk about how they would gain sooooo much weight whilst on those. I never really noticed it, all I noticed was that I became even more depressed, non-emotional, and a lot sleepier 18 hours a day to be exact and eating pure junk...so I guess in those regards yea I gained weight. Yes I got older too, and things change. But I do often wonder about the BC giving me a hand with weight gain and making me slightly a bit more loopy...?

I have a huge problem with *Bloated-ness* It's just about constantly all the time. I am a bit Lactose Intolerant as well. And some others have suggested I take a look into my *gluten* intake. After reading this and hearing about it b4 I do wonder if this BC causes me to have weight gain & being bloated nearly all of the time?

So I get that these IUD's are a method of birth control, and that it is inserted into your uterus? But what does IUD stand for...?

Thanks a bundle! :)

P.S. I hope leydam's surgery goes well, & all is well with you. ;)
