Is this a good workout?

I just started going to the gym, today was all cardio for me, i ran on the treadmill for 1 hour then used other cardio machines as well, alltogether i was at the gym for around 3 hours.

Tommorow im thinking of only weights and machines that require me to do like situps or lift myself up and such...

and then the next day cardio again

and so on for many months.

Is this a good workout? what should i do different?

Also, how many calories should i lose? i am 15 years old and 5'5

I love your enthusiasm but I don't think that you need to be working out for 3 hours in a day. 30-120 min per day is more like it you're only 15.

What about doing weight training 2-3 days a week and cardio on the days in between working out at your gym a total of 5 days.

What is your ultimate goal? General performance?

Thanks for the reply, So your saying i should do weight trainning like, monday tuesday wed and cardio the rest of the week?

I'm not fat, but i have started getting manboobs, i have no idea why so i wanna lose them. I am also trying to be able to gain muscle and be able to run further without being tired. :)

No I'm saying do cardio in between weight training days:

Monday- full body weight training
Tues- cardio
Wedn- full body weight training
Thurs- cardio
Frid- full body weight training
Sat- off
Sun- off

You only need to be at the gym for an hour each day to get a good workout in.

Does this type of schedule work for you?

Waitwhat offered good advice. The landscape is littered with the bodies of people who started off with excessive training volume and burned out. 1 hour / day, 5 days / week is a heavy training volume for a rookie.

Yeah thanks, that works out great for me! One more question though, what would be an effective way to lose manboobs? please reply

haha. Just follow a schedule like that and they'll go away. Unfortunately you can't spot reduce- so just be patient.

I was at the gym today doing weight trainning, and i asked one of the trainners of what he thinks is the best way to lose man boobs and he said, cardio up until you have burned away all your fat.

My question is, is he right? or should i do the cardio one day weights next

Ideally, you want a combination of aerobic exercise and strength training.

Look at it this way- You are probably burning more calories when you are actually moving a heavy weight than when you are doing aerobic exercise. But you are taking breaks, so over 30 minutes the actual number of calories burned doing strength training will be less.

I still say the answer is BOTH. Do your cardio 5 days a week and your weights 2-3 days a week if that works best.

yeah it'll work... if you run enough and burn off enough calories you'll start losing fat, but it's not the best way to approach it.

Right now you're body is burning calories. Sitting on the computer only moving your fingers you are burning those man boobs away. The calories your burning right now is your resting metabolic rate. You can make that rate go up (burn more calories by doing nothing) by putting on muscle.

Also, if you put some muscle on your chest (please not ONLY your chest, gotta be balanced) your chest will have a more squared off shape, rather than a 'booby' shape.

by no means should you abide by the schedule you started off with. You need to take it slow, the hardest part of getting into shape is the beinning, because it's not instant. Read around here you'll learn a ton. Be patient and stick with it, you're really young, and have plenty of time to reach watever goals you have.

Listen to what they are saying man. I may get burned for this, but at 15, you probably shouldn't have to be TOO overly careful about what you eat since you are burning through calories like crazy right now. So, like what WaitWhat said, do a quick/intense full body workout 2-3 days a week(Mon, Wed, Friday generally), and you can still follow that up with about 15-30 mins of cardio. Then on say Tues and Thurs, you can do your 45-60 minutes of normal cardio.

Just give it a chance. Give it a month, and I'm sure you will start seeing results. Also, do yourself a solid, and keep track of what weights you use for each exercise when you lift. Seeing the strength improvement on paper will really give you a boost. Also, there are plenty of threads on here that have some good; quick full body workout routines to follow...so you won't have to do it all on your own.

So far i did

Monday -> Treadmill 30 minutes 3 minutes running 1 minute walking. Then stairs machine for 10 minutes. Then this situps machine for 3 sets and 10 reps. and a few more machines just for the stomach, no weights though.

Tuesday -> I did Weight machines for upper body and stomach for 2 hours straight.

and so on taking turns for each day.

Will i see results in a month if i keep at it? I mean for my man boobs lol

Haha.... stop spending so much time on the ab machines. Ab machines will not help you lose weight. All they do is strengthen your abdominal muscles. And you don't need to do abs every day- they need recovery too. Do your cardio and then maybe 3 or 4 ab exercises if you want but the machines in my oppinion are crap.

And why were you doing weights for 2 hours on Tues? A full body workout should take you anywhere between 30 min to an hour maybe an hour and a half if you don't know what you're doing.

I feel like we are starting from square one, boy! ahaha

Generally speaking, any type of "machine" is inferior to using barbells, dumbells, and body weight. Start off light, youtube some videos on how to properly perform deadlifts, squats, rows, benchpress, etc. Work on pullups (try jumping pullups until you can do full pulls). Basically, you want to lift, push, pull, and press heavy crap, as much and as safely as possible.

As a novice, there's no need for isolation or "spot training/spot reducing"... your whole body will react to the increase in physical activity.

Don't stress over not seeing results in 5 days, everyones bodies react differently when they start training. You'll get there man, just stick with it and keep challenging yourself!

Sorry, I'm going to have to be the one. I started losing my weight when I was 16. Until then I was 'obese' by definition. It didn't matter that I was young, I ate a ton of sat. fat and did not exercise. Younger people may have more energy and burn more calories than older, but his metabolism won't account for absolutly everything.

OP: start reading mens health. They always have good workout plans in the magazine. What does upper body consist of? Did you do all of the muscle groups? If you pile on a bunch of chest stuff, and no back, you';; grow unevenly, and that can destroy your joints.
