is there a difference..

is there a difference between a normal bench and one of those vertical benches where your sitting up? or do they pretty much do the samething?

There very different, one is free weights the other is a machine. Free weights are superior but its fine to do a bit of both.

How are they very different? I've had this discussion with someone who does free weights at work and also says they are superior, but cannot give me any difinitive reasons. My gym (small gym at work) has Machine-based weights, where you simply move the pin between the weights. The only difference I can see is that you have to apply more balance for free-weights, or are there other benefits?

Free weights make the user CONTROL the weight, making him do it properly by himself (the movement), will give you more results.
 
But is the difference really significant?

My thinking is that once I can bench the 95kg (209lbs) weight (which is the heaviest weight on the machine) I will join a gym for the free weights. The gym I go to at the moment is both cheap (free) and convenient as it's at my work.
 
I don't think it's a military press machine C-rad is talkin about. I think he's talking about a machine where you sit up, but you push out, as if it were a bench.
 
Yes, it is really significant. Free weights, I can bench about 155. Machine, I can bench about 175 several times. It makes a big difference in your muscles, at least for me.
 
hmm... thats wierd cause the pic that i showed you is what i own at my house and on freeweights i can bench alot more than i can on my machine
 
I can do a lot more on free weights than on the machine too. I think it is from the range of motion though for me. With a barbell I can only bring it down to the height of my chest and I start with the weights at the top, with the machine the start position is further back (down if its a lying machine) than I could go with a bar and since I don't work heavy in that range very often I cannot get as much going.

Free weights will work your forearms and other muscles a bit at the same time to keep the load balanced. Many people prefer free weights for one reason or another, almost as many prefer machines for other reasons, really the most important thing is to just do it, either way you will see way more results than doing nothing.
