Is Oprah's way correct?

Hello,everybody :) ,

I was lately very impressed by the results in weight loss by Oprah. She is my role model and I enjoy watching her shows. When asked how did she loose weight she said that she walks on treadmill 90 minuts per day and, more than that, she said that according to her instructers this is the absolute minimum you have to do in order to loose weight :( .I currently walk on treadmill and try to speedwalk 20 minutes per mile,4,5 miles a day.My callory intake is below 800 a day.Any advice? Is that really true you have to walk 90 minutes per day, seven days a week?Any help will be greatly appreciated. :)

P.S.Sorry if I have mistakes in my English.I still have a long way to go with my English :p .Thank you for understanding.

Just my two cents....I REALLY don't believe that there is any one thing that you can say "this is exactly what you have to do to loose weight...no more, no less" I think that is part of why dieting is so difficult. Everybody is different and what works for one person may not work for another. So, is 90 min's a day going to work for you? I"m sure it will...will you see the same results that Oprah had? Its hard to tell. All you can do is try.

Just an example, I read from an article by BOB GREENE, her fitness coach, That Oprah swears the key to loosing weight is not eating after 7pm. A fine example of what works for some may not work for others. Not eating after 7 is fine for Oprah, but If I worked the graveyard shift, that wouldn't work for me. Hope that helped a little???

First of all 800 calories per day is not acceptable at all. When that little is eaten then your muscles are also eaten away which makes your body fat even higher. It should be AT LEAST 1200, and then eat over 5-6 small meals per day.

And Oprah walks 90 minutes, not jog or anything like that, if she were to jog at a good pace then she'd be doing a lot less cardio. I would recommend doing cardio 3 days per week and lift weights 3 days per week.

If all you do is cardio then when that fat is burned off you'll have very little tone or definition when you get to the weight you want. I think her instructors are retards lol, I'd put her on a good HIIT program.

Does speedwalking really take 20 minutes for 1 mile? I would think it'd be in the 14-15 minute range. You probably don't like what I've had to say but well, sorry lol. I would recommend 20-30 minutes of HIIT. You basically go in like 1 minute cycles of really fast and then a slow jog. It'll really make you sweat and it won't take you an hour to finish your workout, and you'll know you got a good workout in, if you can walk up stairs easily then you may not have pushed yourself hard enough. Sorry if this is mean in any way, just giving my opinion.

I guess I skipped over the calorie part of your post, and I'd have to agree with Errtu....you have to eat more!! 800 cal's is nothing, then a heavy workout ontop of it. Your not going to do yourself any favors that way.

I must agree as well that eting only 800 calories per day is NOT healthy. All you are going to do is kill your metabolism at that rate and then it will be very hard to lose weight.

if you aren't getting enough calories, you can actually gain weight as your body goes into starvation mode. I've mentioned this a few times, but when you aren't eating enough, your body takes any food that you eat and automatically stores it as fat, instead of keeping it as readily available carbs. It does this because it doesn't know when it's going to get more food ... and, to make the food last longer, your metabolism also slows down ... a bit of a double-edged sword. The opposite is true, and that is why those "eat as much as you want" diets can actually work if done properly (and if it's the right diet for you).

Thank you so very much for your inputs - they are really valuable to me and I will try my best to get everything you said into the count :) .Couple of moments, though.I think we can all agree that every person is unique and if something does work for somebody else it doesn't mean it will work for me. Not so long ago I have read a book, biography,of Mhatma Gandi(spll?),did you know that he lived on one cup of rice and veggies a day?Simplycity was his way of life. When it comes to me,I just want to get better.I have come to the USA from contaminated by Chernobyl zone, very high in radiation, deadly afraid of cancer as I had my first husband die of it at the age of 21,my best friend's baby of cancer of the blood and many others who stayed left behind and who was less fortunate. Before I came to the USA,one of the doctors I have spoke to said that the best wait to keep yourself healthy is to make your food as simple and natural as you can.So I did. After a while you just don't want to it at all.You eat what you have to but beyond that you just can't force yourself, you just are not hungry. So ,what you saying is that even if I am not hungry I have to stuff myself up to 1,200 calories a day? :( For example, today in the morning I had a cup of green tea and an apple and for luch I had griled chicked over spinach - that's it and I feel like I can't eat anything else for the rest of the day.I drink 9-10 full glasses of water a day,but other than that - nothing.Ok,forgot to mention a cup of coffee with milk(no sugar).I would like to ask you for some help, please,if I can. What would you change in the way I eat?I wouldn't want to start eating portions and portions just to make it up to 1,200 calories.I am upset a bit, even cryed a bit after reading your posts.Feels like I am in a race for my servival.I have a 9 year old little girl on my hands, have to make sure she grows up healthy as well. She was born over in the same contaminated earia.I have to make sure I will last enough to raise her.Sorry if I made more mistakes and thank you for your kindness :) .

Hey :) ,there, well,I am not upset by your honesty.I just want to say, yes,I am walking 1 mile per 20 minutes and it makes me sweat.I have had my heart attack three years ago at the age of 27.Can't really race much faster.Have to be careful. But I would really like to ask you what exactly should I eat and how often to make it up to 1,200 calories, considering the fact that I do not have any appetite at all.Thank you. :)

haha. cocogirl, don't mind errtu, he thinks hes perfect :p (I'm kidding)

anyways, make sure you drink lots of water as well, and stay around 1200 calories. I suggest you don't go under because as everyone says, your body will go in starvation mode.

As for Oprah, she is rich and probably has personal chefs to cook food. People like us don't (unless you are rich). So if she didn't have those personal chefs, that 90 mins of just walking probably won't be enough.

Well eat like 6 meals per day, at 200 calories eat meal. One cup of milk is like 80 calories if its skim milk, a little cup of yogurt is around 80 calories, just mix a couple small things to make a meal. Have some chicken and a cup of milk, lots of protein and some carbs for energy. Or a small amount of oatmeal in the morning. I don't exactly know, just look at the side of the containers from your food. Sorry about the heart attack, it's good to know your sweating at the end of the workout, just keep at it and if it starts to get too slow for you then go on a slow jog. 200 calories for one meal is very easy to find, Just make sure your macronutrients are like 25% fat 30-40% protein and 30-40% carbohydrates. I recommend that mixture but I guess people have their own opinions on how it goes. Make sure you get a good amount of protein. And as for Ghandi, have you seen a picture of him? Not to say anything about the guy, but he looked unhealthily(this a word) skinny. I really don't know your stats or anything like that but please don't stay on the 800 calories! Have a nice day and drink your water.

you can do what errtu said, divide meals into 6, 200 cal meals. Or you can do this as well...eat 3 , 300 calorie meals, like breakfast lunch and dinner, and than one, 100 calorie snack like apples or 100 calorie packs (helps me with my sweet tooth) in between meals .... so you'd have breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack. Do what you want, but I think it may be difficult to have a meal, thats 200 cals. Lean cusines are typically 220 cals. Figure out what is best for you. It may take a little "practice" to realize what that is.

He's some Indian guy lol. I believe he was a monk who tried to stop a war with his people peacefully. I don't recall though, why is no one ever on chat? Oh and never listen to Nymphetamine, shes canadian lol.

Thank you! :) :p Oats sound like a great idea.I always loved oats.I will try to change my eating pattern starting tomorrow, but in any event,I,for some reason,do not enjoy food and really am not hungry at any given point of the day. When it comes to Oprah, yes,I guess being rich means you can get thinner with the help of the army of cooks and sports instructors.Well, what you gonna do ;) but try to make it on your own. Also,I do not understand how body can go into the starvation mode and stop loosing weight.Correct me if I am wrong:let's say your calory intake per day is 800 and let's say you burn 2,500 calories a day.How is that you body will stop loosing weight if it is forced to burn not only what you eat(800calories),but extra(which is all the extra fat). How is it exactly your body will stop loosing weight? Just trying to understand. Also,I think calories as well as exercise are very induvidual. For example,I have a very skinny friend who can eat up to 4,000 calories a day and never gain a pound(don't you just hate it? :p ) and I have another skinny friend who eats so little all her life that you can not help but wonder how is she still alive. And she says she just doesn't need to much food.Me - I am a different story.Believe it or not - I can gain 25 pound a month and that scares me.If I would let it go my weight from 190 will balloon up to 250 with in the matter of few month.SO,here I am,tired of all this trying.I am really glad I found this forum and you, guys!THANK YOU! :)

P.S.Ghandi was an Indian man who spend all his life wearing a simple tunic, eat a cup of rice an veggies a day, never wore shoes and represented his people,he became a symbol of dignity and a life proove that human body doesn't need to be spoiled in any way in order to leave a full life.
