Is it just me or am I doing something wrong

Hey I still have yet to see my abs I don't know why. I know I've been on this site not to long now and I've asked you guys for advice and everything so I was just wondering if I should do a bulking phase. I try to keep a good diet in order (though as I mentioned before I keep getting thrown off here and there) and I know that perfect form is idle and that I shouldn't work my abs everyday yatta yatta! I'm thinking now that maybe as soon as this week is over I should start a new bulking up phase. I guess I got screwed up because I didnt go to the gym on monday, but I realized that maybe I need to gain a little more muscle. Well heres the thing, I didnt start getting serious about working out and stuff untill about March 2004 a week after I turned 16. I weighed about 210 or so before I started working out then after three months I started seeing results and then In July of that year I stopped doing cardio then in about April of 2005 I was told about how cardio is important by some guy at the gym about how cardio is important. I am now about 148 to 152 i think. my Heights around 5'8.5 5'9 So I started with cardio again. with my normal weight training routine of course. Also in October or of 2005 (the one that just passed) I was told that if I wanted to cut up for my martial arts do low weight high reps. I have gone back and forth left to right side to side with confusion on the whole weight trainging and getting lean and cut thing. You see the main thing is that I do Martial arts. I want to look lean and cut like van damme or bruce lee or something not big and bulking. I guess I'm pretty lean right now. Im sry I couldnt give a picture. How long should I saty on my Bulking phase and for that matter should I do a bulking phase.

I make sure I get a days rest I do weight training 3 times a week Monday (back and Biceps abs also) Thursday (Legs and no ab exercises) Friday (Triceps Shoulders chest) and do Martial arts 3 times a week Tuesday wensday and Saturday. and Sunday I try to rest that day. I do Light to Moderate (note Trying to lean and cut) I make sure I dont do to many reps and two many sets. I do four sets two warm up sets the maximum 20 to 30 reps and two challeging sets 8-12. I also do a 15 minute cardio warm up at the gym with the last three minutes as a cool down. Is this ok any changes? If so Any Suggestions? I know I made myself a promise that I wouldnt rely to much on others anymore but I think I could use some help.

P.S I think maybe Its the fact that I didnt get to go to the gym on monday this week and thurday today. I went to my tenchi kenpo classes. Maybe I just need to take the week off from weight traing and start back on monday.

If you want to maximize for martial arts, then the 20-30 rep range is not what you want. You need to work on strength and speed. "Toning" and leaning out is diet not how you lift a barbell.

Include some of these movements-
overhead squat
squat
push press
romanian deadlift
high pulls
1 arm db snatch
db swings
pendlay rows
chins
1 arm db incline press

I'd also go for 3 fullbody workouts a week.

yeah, evo is right.
I started martial art when i was 9, so when I was 14 I thort I was the nuts! I did 100's and 100's of sit ups, push up and pull ups. but by the time i was 17 I wasnt making any gains at all, I was getting weaker compaired to my body weight, cos I didn't no how to train for strength.

I wish I had the knowledge to start compound weight exercise when I was younger, I'd be a much better martial artist today if i'd have known.

I know that these guys will tell you that you dont need to work on your grip, but i'd say you shoud get an egale claw machine.

Bulking and cutting - it depends on you and your goals. Im training for size and power, so the bulking is more important to me. I usually bulk for 3-5months then strip off the fat in 1-2 months. but if your looking for a slim toned body then you'll want something more like 3months bulking 4months cutting.
it depends a lo ton the effort you put in. I hate cutting, I find it hard, so I diet strict, and run every day. I choose a weight I want to get down to and get it as fast as pos so i can eat lots of food again and get of of the "cardiozone" of my gym where they play bad music and have flashy lights.

How reps in the bulking and how many in the Cutting phase. Do I keep the number of sets and reps the same Cuz I'm not trying to be too big here. and once I get My abs showing how do I keep it that way. Or do I have to do the Bulking and Cutting phaseover and over again.

But wait what if I wanted to stay at the weight I'm at right now but be toned and defined. I dont really want to bulk up to the size of an elephant. I was chunky most of my life. I hate the tought of gaining fat.

why do you want to stay at the same weight???
do you have to be that specific weight for a reason?

stop thinking about the numbers, it doesnt really matter how much you weigh does it?

reps - should constantly change anyway. try 3x10, 4x8, 5x5, 10x3 for a month each and see how you find each of them. personally, I dont like 4x8, so i dont do it.

"once I get My abs showing how do I keep it that way. Or do I have to do the Bulking and Cutting phaseover and over again."

you lose muscle and gain fat when you stop training, you gain muscle when you bulk, you lose fat when you exercise cv. so... how do you keep the same once you get there?
well... you may never get there, cos as your training goes on, your goals may grow, so you may want to get fitter, stronger, larger, more cut. because without goals its easy to give up and then you'll get fat.
however if you do get there and you happy to stay the same its down to you, you'll have to look at your self every day and say, whats happened to me today? what do i need to do.

so every morning you look to see if you have put on fat - if so cut
or you may mant to put on more muscle - so bulk.

should I try the pyrimad technique? as I said before I do two warm up sets and then two challenging sets. I'm already at a good body weight I consider myself to be pretty lean already. I just want to see my abs some more. I'm very flexable. Its just that because It's so cold here In Boston so there for i can't go out and walk like I love doing in the warmer months.

pyrimad technique??? do you mean pyramid sets?
if you mean technique then i dont know what you mean.
but the sets... yes, if you want, I'd rather stick to a number and keep putting up the weight.

The thing about weight lifting is that there is so many ways of doing it, so many people to tell you diffrent things and so many things to try.

in the end you just gotta do what you enjoy doing. you not doing this cos you have to, your doing it cos you want to. If you dont enjoy or need it then dont bother.

pyramid sets, flat sets, super sets - what ever, as long as your doing something. just try it all.

Yea I'll stick to what I'm doing But should I keep my rep limit between 10 to 20 no more no less or what. I keep a good diet I try my hardest not to eat junk I eat at least5-6 smaller meals a day. I take my Glutamine in the morning so I dont go catabolic during the day and take it before I go to bed so I dont go Catabolic In my sleep. Also I take my Glutamine right after I work out at the gym so i have time to shower and change then go back home and eat a good protein meal. So its 1 gram of protein per pound right. cuz this morning I was 154. strange

for the martial arts you may wanna keep the rep range between 2-4 for explosive power.
but as a very loose rule we say it best to stick in the area of 6-12.

you must make sure that your tired at the end of the set.

hey this thing shouldnt make me to big will it cuz like I said before I dont want to be to big because that will take my speed away. and for the reps should i treat each of them like a hi tension punch or kick cuz I know thats what frank mir of UFC does i so so in november 2004 black belt magazine.

being big wont take any of your speed away. Ive been practicing Karate for 13 yrs, and may others over the last 7 years, I can safly say that you'd have to be massive for any of your speed to be taken away.

I say go for it, put on some muscle and see how you do. Its not like your gonna wake up in the morning and be as big as arnie, Pack on the muscle and just look in the mirror. If your getting bigger that you wanted then stop weight training.

Look at these UFC fighters, some of them are pretty big guys.
