International Food Chart Comparisons Discussion

I agree that the food industry plays a role. Especially the ones that sell convenience. But ultimately, I believe it's each adults responsibility.

Does anyone want to share their opinion about the new US Food Plate that was just released in June 2011?

I can't speak on the food plate, but on the food industry, I noticed something interesting awhile ago when I bought pasta. I was always told that a serving size was 50-75g (weighed from dry), and in fact I'm certain my old packs of pasta said 75g. This new pack says a serving size is 90! Sure, most people don't weigh their food, but could this be an attempt to get people to eat more?

In one word: NO

Most people don't look at the serving size of the food they're eating, so it wouldn't make a difference. I'm willing to bet that most people don't realize that a normal can of Campbell's soup has 2.5 servings in it. I'm willing to bet that most people think it's only 1 serving.

Most people don't care.

I'm not convinced that it's the food pyramids/plates that directly influence the rates of overweight and obesity. It may play a very small part, but I think it has much more to do with culture and what's acceptable and not acceptable. For most North Americans, it seems to be acceptable to eat many meals away from home, eat in front of the TV, and eat 'convenience' foods. In my opinion, if people actually followed the guidelines of the food pyramids set out in each country, I'm sure there would be a lot fewer people with weight issues, even with differences in how the guidelines are set out. Many people either do not know what the guidelines are, or they simply disregard the guidelines, regardless of what they are. It's become acceptable for us here in North America to eat like crap, so people just use it as their excuse.

Today on BBC News:

"This study looked at portion size and studies have shown that having larger portions of food leads to an increased intake."
