Increasing PM Text Limit

Mreik,

I think you and Karky are missing the benefit of increasing the text limit on the PM. The discussions that would happen in a PM, would not necessarily be meant for a post but would still be appropriate among members who feel they have become more friendly with some than with others.

Again, taking it to email somewhere else is taking those same people away from the forum; when they could be here helping others while they are PM'ing.

If you really think that increasing the limit, will decrease posts, then this forum is already failing. However I don't think that is truly the case. You won't force people to use the forum by trying to limit them in other ways. Anything that can be said, will be said on the forum regardless if their is PM'ing or not.

Limiting PM'ing is simply stopping people from sharing a little more of themselves with others.

When I have spoken with people in PM's I say things that I would NEVER say on the forum. I don't see why it should be necessary that I should have to take it to email either. If it got to that, then I would simply stop.

Just means me spending less time and being less active on the forum because of limitations imposed on me.

Making a forum a place to enjoy and participate in is part of the appeal of this type of community. If you want the place to grow, and draw active members, it helps when there are features that make it easier for them to do everything here, instead of pushing them elsewhere.

simply food for thought......

cheers,
Diane

Excellent post, Gotfit.

Just excellent.

Best wishes to you,

Chillen

you can open two tabs, one for mail and one for the forum and help out others while you are typing your email.

Not every uses Mozilla.....

and I'm not trying to argue with you, I was just trying to show what the benefit are......

IE has a tab function too, at least the newer versions of it. You can open two windows too. I just don't think the point makes any sense since you can be at two places at once on the internet. Just my opinion. Also, a tip, erase the automatic quotes as they just take up space.

Your reasons are good gotfit, but not 100% true.

"I have had days when I was PM'ing people inbetween posting and it was great to be able to be able to go thru posts, then see that there was a PM and I could respond to relatively fast."

This is exactly what Karky and I were speaking of.

and what is wrong with that?:confused:

I was on the forum offering other people assistance in posts, at the same time I was speaking to someone on the forum who I was getting to know. What I was saying in my PM would never be said on the forum, but if I had to leave to my email to answer it, I may not come back to the forum....Where as while I was inbetween posts, I could easily answer it.

My point is, it helps bring this community together. Not everything will always be said in the forum, if you want people to "connect" and feel like a community, then it is a feature that can help.

I re-read your post, I thought you were speaking of answering someones post through pm. But I misunderstood.. You're points are more than valid, although we're still concerned with what we spoke of before. So as an intermediate we'll settle on 1500/per, and work from there.

well, that's nice for those who have the newer version of it, but not everyone does....

user friendly.....

Just my opinion. Also, a tip, erase the automatic quotes as they just take up space.

you're right, just YOUR opinion. I like the automatic quotes thank you very much. They serve a purpose for me, so please, they may take up space to you, but I quote with intent.

cheers,
Diane

everything I post on the forum is my opinion. that is the point of a discussion, to share opinions. The automatic quotes will gather up every time you reply to the same PM topic, I was just saying it can be a good idea to delete the ones you don't need. No need to get hostile.

Thanks for taking the time to re-read. I never respond to a post on the forum by sending a PM. There is no point and as it is quite obvious, it doesn't help others who are unable to benefit from the response.

I can understand your concerns, but I think you'll find that the posts on the forum will remain the same regardless of the ability to PM others.

Thanks again,
Diane

'Kay, so, basic market principles. If I am PM'ing someone through this site, it is promoting use of the site. Same way Safeway offers sandwiches to get you in the store, where you suddenly remember you need milk, eggs, twinkies and a butterball turkey.

I don't send a lot of PMs, but when I do, it's quite a nuisance to have to break them up into 3 or 4 parts. I haven't seen any technically valid argument made for keeping the limit. The reason against is very simple: it's irritating and serves no purpose.

Also, I agree with Karky re: the automatic quoting. It's not that hard to do it yourself if necessary, but 9/10 times it's just wasting my time in deleting it...usually to make enough room to have to break my PM up into only 3 or 4 parts. But it wouldn't really matter much if there was no limit.

My apologies....

I didn't mean to sound hostile, I just thought you were referring to the quotes I was using in this thread...lol (i.e. quoting posts on the forum). I cut out the quotes in PM's for that exact reason. However, it can still leave you very limited.

sorry ?

No limit is asking for trouble. And there are plenty reasons for having a limit, otherwise it wouldn't be limited. You think the just decided to design vBuliten with a useless feature, and we just decided to utilize a useless feature?

I swear, you give an inch and (some) people want a mile.

OP seems satisfied. If any other questions arise on this topic, feel free to pm me about it or open another thread here.
