In need to support, motivation and discipline!!

Hi all, I am new here and I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself and what I hope to gain from this community.

I'm from England, 22, 195lbs, 5'6". I have been struggling with my weight for two and a half years now, but very recently I have put on another stone. In December I lost nearly a stone due to a temporary break up with my partner, but since getting back together and facing the final months of my degree I not only put the weight back on, but have put on another stone.

I think my problems are firstly, that I love eating sweet foods, cakes and sweets in particular, I know that once I can control my habit of eating these foods then that will make a difference. Secondly, my partner is a bad influence on me, he does not like to eat the same healthy foods as me such as fish, or cous cous, so rather than me cooking two separate meals for us, I end up making the carb heavy food that he likes to eat for both of us.

On the bright side, I do love to exercise, but I become demotivated when I work out and then eat a bad meal, so I end up giving up as I never lose weight.

What I would like is to find a buddy who I can share my weight loss challenge with, as in my life I have nobody who I feel I can turn to and be honest with about how unhappy I am with myself, not even my partner knows how I feel!

Glad to meet you all
J

Hey Jadekr. Welcome.
I definately hear where you're coming from about eating. I, like you, LOVE sweets and it's my downfall cause I just can't get enough of them. And again, like you, I'm trying to cut down on carbs, especially refined and processed. Anyways, I wish you luck and hope you get to where you want to be.

Hi Rosee, thanks for the support, It is really encouraging to hear that your not alone. I wish you luck too. I am going to try to replace my sweet cravings for some fruit, for example, I like fruit in jelly and fruit in custard, and each pot is around 100 calories. Is there anything you are doing to replace the sweets?

Hi Jadekr!

I'm in England too :)

I completely know where you're coming from... my weight's been up and down over the years and I've got a fiendish sweet tooth too. AND a husband who loves rich, carb heavy food and lots of it! I decided to put myself in charge of all the dinners :) If he's still hungry, he can have a snack later!

One thing I've got to say is please don't beat yourself up if you have a bad day. This is exactly what I used to do and any progress I made was quickly undone... My attitude was... 'well, I've messed up now... I might as well eat another chocolate bar/biscuit/ice cream and I'll start again tomorrow'. Well, tomorrow became the next day and the next and the next... then whoosh! Suddenly I'm a stone heavier! There's nothing wrong with treats in moderation. For me, I find I stay on track if I allow myself a few treats now and again rather than cutting them out completely. I might lose the weight a tad slower but it's going in the right direction and I can look forward to a bit of ice-cream at the weekend :)

I used to find that I craved sweets after dinner the most... I think it was just habit really. Have you tried low fat yoghurts as a substitute for the sweets? Muller Lights are great and they come in lots of flavours. My favourite at the moment is the multipack of vanilla and dark chocolate flavours. They're virtually fat free and come in at about 90 cals per pot.

Well, just a few random ramblings :) but I hope that helps a bit! Feel free to pm and good luck!

Hi Festdevil,

I did try to PM you, but it wouldn't allow me to as I haven't been a member for long enough! When I read your post, it sounded just like me! I have to agree with the beating myself up part, over the past few month when I have fell off the wagon I find myself just saying I might as well eat what I like that day and start again tomorrow, but then it does turn into the next day and the next day...
I have being trying to allow myself the odd treats, I know I will fail if I cut out all the things I enjoy completely. But I have done ok this week, apart from the Pizza! I have had two desserts, both small portions, home made, and the carrot cake I made was low fat, without butter.
I do like yoghurt, and I buy low fat fruit ones, but for some reason I don't fancy them in the evening, so I have been having fruit in jelly or fruit in custard, which comes in at under 100 calories per pot. I am finding this calorie counting very difficult, as I don't know the calories for every meal I eat!
How are getting on with your weight loss journey so far?
Thanks for the encouraging words x

Hi Jadekr!

How's it going? The weight loss is going ok... I think! I've lost about 5lbs in 5 weeks... so a steady 1lb a week. I don't know if you're the same but my weight loss doesn't seem to be linear at all! I seem to plateau, maybe even gain a bit then a couple of weeks later... bang! Suddenly 3lbs off! Got to say, at the start this discouraged me a bit. But then I thought... I'm doing everything right... I'm tracking my food, never going over my calories, I'm exercising... so it'll come off when it wants to come off :) Although this week might be a bit of a bust. Had a housewarming party on Saturday - loads of booze and nibbles and a lazy hangover day with a cooked breakfast, pizza and chocolate  It was great fun though!

Are you tracking your calories at all? You mentioned you found calorie counting difficult. I know lots of people on here use fitday or the daily plate. I use My Fitness Pal but I think they all pretty much do the same job. You can search for foods and choose the quantity and it tells you how many calories and how much fat, carbs and protein etc. You can also use it to work out how many calories in recipes as well... so good for working out how many calories in your homemade desserts.

Hope that helps!

Festdevil,

I'm ok thanks, just at the end of week 1 and going to have a weigh in once I've worked out. Yeah I know what you mean, but I think you feel better for eating right and exercising with all the energy it gives you, and I love the ache the next day after a good work out... But it's a battle when you discover you haven't lost anything in any week, I hope I've at least lost 1lb this week.

I have been counting most of my calories as the week has gone on, I've only been using recipes that have the nutritional info per portion, or adding up the calories on my foods at home. It's just a problem if I decide to eat out, or if someone else cooks. But I will follow up the two you have mentioned, thanks :)

Fingers crossed for weight loss this week!
