I'm tired of shotokan

LOL - yeah.
To be honest if your board of the classes its down to the teacher not the style.

true, now that i think of it my sensei is a bit of an ass sometimes... he's extremely strong and skilled at shotokan, but i dont think he knows how to teach it well... as far as the class being a belt factory, id have to disagree. 5 years is plenty of time to get a black belt, and as aevans has stated, black belt means you've just hit the tip of the iceberg and have just qualified to start learning real shotokan. its just that ive had a month of this "real" shotokan and it doesn't seem much different than "pre-black belt" shotokan. i just want to learn some other style of karate-do, or maybe a different sport altogether, perhaps boxing, as long as it's a physical sparring sport; im basically looking for a "fighting with rules" sport.

MT, Judo, JJ, Sanda, Boxing, Kickboxing, and TKD (lol) are often competition-oriented.

In Krav Maga, you're pretty much never going to hit anyone full force.

whats gutterfighting? sounds pretty badass

its the system of a guy called Fairbairn who trained paratroops under WW2, from what I heard the boys came back and praised the system... I haven't found any schools that teaches gutterfighting so the best thing would be to team up with a couple of self defense interested friends

I think you've found your problem... In our school post-shodan shotokan is advanced self defense techniques. Our sensei had a little background in aikido though... so he does mix it in a bit.

I box myself, but if you're into the street fighting aspect I wouldn't take boxing, like they say 95-99% of fights end up on the ground after 30 seconds. If you take shotokan (I know what it is, but not familiar with the style exactly), then you should have a decent hold on strikes, and may want to do try wrestling or jui jitsu (brazilian) for grappling. That or kickboxing if you want more strikes.

Pure & Simple

THE LONGER YOU TRAIN, then they start showing you the goodies that work, then maybe, they'll slip in pressure points,( the ones that are tiny & supossed to be very dangerous, the ones ,that in a real jam you'd have buckl'ys to hit. & if you're really lucky some complicated locks & holds, that you could only realy put on someone in a coma. It's all about opening up pandora's box just a little to keep you there.
Most places will keep you in the dark like a mushroom, How many actual ( head high knockout kicks) have you done to someones head in full contact sparing? ;) ! I wouldn't kick above the groin in the real world.
If you're lucky some clubs may be a little daring & do some SELF DEFENCE, , to keep the troops interested. :D A lot places are a money making venture, fees, grading fees, player insurance, membership fees , international membership fess, ring any bells? They say it's the instructor not the style, you should be interested in first, !YOU RECKON ! mate you want the complete package . Something Simple , Basic , raw, & effective, An instructor who's open minded , practical, honest & isn't limited by only what his style knows. OR SELLS.:) Forget the belt path , it's originally a good idea, centuries ago now it's a way to tie you in & keep you there. Find a style, person, that suites you/ your needs/ find others like yourself, don't execpt second best.

to tell u the truth i think shotokan is the MOST effective self defence. ive been doing muay thai for 5 years and my mate has been doing shotokan for 10 years but in a sparring match the most ive lasted with him was 52 seconds, maybe cause hes been doing hes sport for 5more years or maybe im crap at it :p
