Illinois Earthquake

Did anyone feel it this morning?

I was awake when it happened... But didn't feel a thing (I'm in St. Paul right now) ... The epicenter was somewhere in Southern Illinois near Indiana. When I first heard about this on the news my first thought was: "OMFG New Madrid!" If you don't know about New Madrid, It's a fault that puts the San Andreas to shame. It's a prehistoric fault that lies near Memphis on the Mississippi river. If it were to srike again like it did in 1811-1812, it would pretty much level Memphis, and do a ton of damage to my hometown (Nashville).

Fortunately, it was only a 5.4, I called my dad up and he said he heard a very low rumble and heard the windows shake. He said it was very unusual compared to your average nighttime 'bumps' (Hail, Jet, Wind, Thunder ETC) So he looked outside to see it was dry. He said our dogs jumped up and walked around in dazed confusion; and he turned on the news to see that a ton of people in TN had felt it and people were calling in.

Did anyone on here feel it? Hopefully it's not a premonition of things to come on the New Madrid fault!

If people hadn't mentioned it on the elevator this morning i wouldnt have even known...

 :D

Doesn't even register on the maleficent richter scale... (I grew up in north jersey - not far from the Ramapo fault line -that used to wake up occassionally - pictures would fall off the wall occassionally - but no biggie..

Radio said it was not the New Madrid specifically. It was a 'branch' if you will.

It woke me up at 438 but did not feel anything- it was already over. My 2 cats were not pleased though. The one never jumps on the bed- he was on the bed wanting reassurance by 450.

Yep, was relieved to hear it wasn't New Madrid!

I've already heard stories of people saying their parakeets/dogs/other animal started freaking out before they felt/heard the earthquake. The animals, man, they're in tune...

In a way, I wish I was at home right now... Would have been quite an experience to feel that! Hehe, sorry we're not all earthquake pro's Maleficent, I would have been rather freaked! *wimp stamp* Pictures falling off the wall would have officially freaked out us native Nashvillians!

When I was a kid - my dad told a story of how he was in foreign country ona business trip -when an earthquake hit -He said he pretty much hit the floor - and he looked up and saw all the secretaries calmly typing away and everyone going about their business... dumb american :D

a 5.4 is pretty low on the richter scale -it's doubtful you would have even felt it...

Chicago had a very small one some years back- really just some mild shaking.

Almost shut the town down. The Midwest does not react well to earthquakes.
We are sissies when it comes to that- Chicago more so than most.
It will be interesting to watch the news this evening to see how people are 'reacting' to this- even though there ws no damage.

Criminey chicago freaks out when there's a little bit of snow.. Hello people -it's winter -what the hell do you think you're gonna get? :D

Told ya. We are a town of sissies.
We freak out when it rains, is too hot, too cold, earthquake.........
You were around last year for the locusts right? How much was that played out to all hell?
Killer bees willl be coming back soon.:D

I'm in Ohio and people where calling the radio station about an earthquake in Findlay!! I dont think theres EVER been an earthquake in Findlay before....freaky

They said it was felt all the way to Georgia.
Supposedly that is common with midwest earthquakes.

Worked in the Home Depot in Findlay when it went up....
Nice little town if I recall correctly.
