IAmGoingToTri's Diary

@LaMaria - Good point, I will be careful. I have thought about it, and I think it is a good idea to not go swimming this week (which was not yet on my schedule anyways, but I was playing with the idea of adding a swim). I think, with swimming, I risk getting the wound infected.
I didn't keep my head low on my bike... I was cycling on my city bike. My road bike needs some repairs... so I use it as a substitute.

I think I cycled about 40-45 kilometers, burning a total of 1500 calories with my weight. Then I went to the McDonalds, and at a 1500 calorie meal :D. I still lost weight that day, because the rest of the day I only ate at most 1000 calories, while using at least 2300.

The cycling was nice. My last cycling trips always went south (I mean literally speaking... there were no problems ;)), to cycle around a lake, but this time I went east, towards the sea, along a canal. I made it about halfway there. I think if my road bike is repaired and when I have done a bit more cycling training, I can make it to the sea, which is about 30-35 kilometers (so back and forth it is about 60-70)

The plan for today is to go for another 12 km run. I think I will do that early in the evening. After that I will donate some blood (not to lose weight of course... although it does help :p). I will make sure that I eat enough food before I do that.

:D Earning some high-calorie food with exercise feels so much better than just having it because it's there... I have an aunt who used to live 72 km from my parents and as teens one of our summer projects (for my sisters and me) was to go visit her by bike, have an excessive late lunch, then bike home in time for dinner... good times!

Wow that is so cool LaMaria! :) That is a lot of kilometers to do in a day... how old were you when you first did that?

Short update:
Took a break from exercising today. I exercised 4 days in a row already, so it was time to rest a bit. From now on, I will take 2 resting days every week, until my endurance is so strong that I only need one... and of course I switch between different activities to make sure that I don't overtrain one muscle group).

With my schedule I increased my exercise load considerably this week, a bit too much I would say; I planned to do 60 kilometers of cycling and 42 of running... while I did 25-30 kilometers of running per week before this. My principle used to be that I should not increase the distance I do for a particular sport by more than 10% (to allow my body to adjust/strengthen and prevent overtraining). I will stick to that principle again... it would really suck if I would get an injury because of making the stupid mistake of training more than I know I should.

Hello again :D.
Wanted to talk a little bit.
Is your weight changed from last time? And I wanted to talk about cycling a little bit. I met 2 new friends 3 days ago and they are awesome and I really enjoy speaking to them. We cycle everyday for about 2-5hours depending on how tired are we. And that is really good for me right now. When I look in mirror I can see my body forming and getting better shape. What hit me the hardest(in good way) I met a friend today that I did not see for a long time. He couldn't believe how much I changed. That is the thing I was wondering about all the time. I couldn't see the difference on my body because I look myself every day in mirror and I get used to it. People that do not see you for long time can easly see difference :D.I am glad that you can take some meals to award yourself on some way for hard work and still lose weight. I really like to come by and check your Diary :D. Looks really fun and I can get into it. I can kinda feel like you do, what you do everyday and what are your goals and plans. It helps me a lot honestly, just seeing what are you doing gives me a lot of new suggestions which is awesome.
Keep up with good work my friend :)

Almost thirteen, but we´d bike around 10k to and from school every day, so I guess we were somewhat prepared. That´s when I learned that jeans shorts are fine for almost any situation - but not for biking longer distances :D There may have been blood
I´m glad to hear you´re pacing yourself with your distances: you of all people must know this is a marathon, not a sprint.

@Andrej - Wow, cycling for 2-5 hours every day is LOT. Great that you found friends to do that with, that must be very motivating! :) Great that you are starting to notice the effects of your hard work, and it is always great if other people notice it as well! ;)
My weight is 95.0 kg right now. So, not different on the scale, but I expect it to drop by 1-1.5 kg soon. I increased my exercise routine and when I do that my body tends to retain a lot of water (it has to do with increasing the glycogen stores in the muscles). So, if I were to correct for this effect, I estimate that my weight is somewhere around 93.5-94.0 kg. When I look in the mirror it is very clear that I am leaner than 5 weeks ago.
Thanks for your interest & support! All the best to you to, you are doing very well!

@LaMaria - Wow, that is very young to do such a distance! I agree that such a daily commute is excellent good training (I also had to cycle around 10k to and from school :)). Haha, that must have hurt! ;)
The longest distance that I did on one day is around 200 kilometers, from my parent's place to the city where I was studying (and not by the shortest route). I did this a few times, but then I chose shorter routes of about 180 kilometers. I hope to do it again this autumn, it's a nice adventure!

Actually when I think about it. You are losing weight so fast. 5kilos in 5 weeks that means in a week you are -7000 calories.

How I feel

I feel better every day, but not very good. One of my wisdom teeth got pulled last week's Monday and the wound that it caused is causing me quite a lot of pain. It is making it more difficult to sleep, talk, concentrate and eat (I guess that last one is good for this goal). I am keeping the wound clean and it is slowly healing. The pain is still annoying, but it is much less than that is was at the end of last week, when it peaked.

Some thoughts

Because of the health issue that I describe above, I am taking it easy with my goal of building habits, most importantly for exercising. I won't go running, (intense) cycling or swimming until this wound is healed. Yesterday I did go kayaking 11 kilometers with my brothers, which was nice.
I will replace this with walking and less intense cycling, and when the wound is healed enough (hopefully after this week) I will start my regular exercise routine again.

How I feel

I don't feel great, but I feel a lot better than last week. Work was a bit stressful, and I could not sleep well because of an infection caused by a pulled tooth (which caused a lot of pain). However, I just continued working and now it is getting a bit better now, and the wound in my mouth is much less painful now. I will make sure that I sleep 8+ hours every night.

Some thoughts

I have paused a lot of my goals to build habits. I drink alcohol and I don't exercise. I intend to start picking these goals up again next week. I will stick with this plan, I see no reason to change it.
I don't feel bad about letting go of my goals for a while. It was the right choice, given the circumstances. Building habits takes a lot of time and energy, and now these resources were needed for other areas of my life that were a bit more critical. I am glad that despite this, I still manage to lose weight at a really nice rate. :)

Ouch. I got dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago because I didn't listen to the doctor and drank from a straw. You could look into my mouth and literally see my jaw bone. It was the most pain I've ever experienced in my life.

The only relief I was able to get for it was a little bottle of clove oil I got at a Wal-Greens. Dabbed some on a Q-tip and applied to the area. It instantly numbs any pain on contact.

Great job on the cycling. I'm looking to start cycling myself soon if I can get a bike.

Thanks for your post Mowen!

I agree... it is very painful... it was also the most painful experience in my life! I am happy that it has healed enough now, I don't need to use pain pills and it does not distract me from work/having fun/sleep anymore. This experience has taught me to value my health a lot more!

Now that I am better again, I feel ready to pick up exercising again. I will do three runs this week, and cycle once, and coming weekend I will have my first triathlon in a year or so! :)

Great that you are going to start cycling! How is it to cycle in your area? In the Netherlands it is very nice, all of our country's infrastructure was built with bicyclists in mind, so it is very safe and there are some beautiful bicycle roads going through nature areas.

I am feeling great in last few weeks, got my muscles out :D. Feel powerfull. Im not tired and I just feel awesome.
Strenght training helped a lot :D.
Im glad that you are feeling better for your wisdom teeth being pulled out :O. And I am happy for your first triathlon :D

Good to hear you´re starting to feel better! Having a bit of a rest will probably have done your body some good.

I'm a little bit jealous to hear that you have so much infrastructure supporting a cycling lifestyle. The roads near my home are a bit of a deathtrap with very narrow 2 lane roads and people speeding. Where I live in general has a lot of hills and tends not to have hardly any bicycle lanes, but there are plenty of opportunities for off-road cycling. I don't know if I am up for something like that just yet. :p

Also, glad to hear you're feeling better.

I live in Vienna, Austria, which has a green vice-mayor very eager to get people biking so the infrastructure has improved massively these past ten years. Sadly she hasn't yet removed the hill/mountain between my home and workplace :p What's worse is that folks in cars can't wrap their heads around the idea of bikes in the city yet, especially when it's neither sunny nor the middle of the day.

How I feel
I took a day off from work. I feel very good now.

Some thoughts

I have picked up exercising again. I just ran 10k and I will cycle 25k this evening. Now I am going to donate some blood. Don't worry, I will eat and drink plenty and I will cycle slowly :)

I chose not to go cycling after donating blood and chose to go studying in the evening instead. I wanted to give my body a bit of time to rest.

@LaMaria - that is cool! I can imagine that hills/mountains can be a challenge. We don't have mountains, only small hills. The Netherlands is very flat ;). Must be frustrating that people driving cars can forget about cyclists, can be dangerous.

@Mowens1984 - I would choose to do off-road cycling then, if the roads are really unsafe. No need to get yourself killed in an accident. Off-road cycling is really fun. I used to do that here in the Netherlands, and there are some nice tracks here, but not many. That's a downside of living in a flat country I guess.

:p Here you get people who will take their mountain bike up in the car, ride it down to a friend's car and then drive up again to pick up their own car... I say that's cheating. And Sunday hikers need good reflexes! Biking in flat areas means you're battling the wind; when you're going up a steep hill you usually don't get head wind until you reach the top :)

Haha that is very lazy! :)

That's true, the wind can be quite strong here. I have had to cycle in strong snow-, rain- and hailstorms... even duststorms (the area where I grew up is prone to wind erosion). Dutch weather is always fun, though I should not complain, the weather is very nice right now.

I am quitting smoking now. It's tough, but I know that I will be successful. I have a very strong motivation and I am willing to suffer for a few weeks to get this over with. I know that the cravings will stop after that time. I picked up smoking like 2-3 months ago... I got a cigaret from my colleague at work and somehow I thought it would be a good idea to accept it. Stupid move. I was a bit stressed, it was one of my first days at my new job. I should have chosen another way to deal with the stress.

That said, will get a coffee at Starbucks to reward myself for the progress so far.

Oh, well done Tri. If you have only been smoking for a little while it should not be hard to give up. Cigarettes only add to your stress. They are deadly.
