IAmGoingToTri's Diary

Short update: I think I am not going to put in a lot of effort this week to lose weight. I will stick with my habits(no alcohol/no chips/no fastfood/enough exercise/etc) and this may be enough to still lose something thing week, but I will eat a bit more, because I need the energy and attention for learning for an exam that I have coming Friday, that I really want to pass, it is really important for my career.

This is not an excuse to overeat. I will make sure that I don't gain weight, but I probably won't lose any either.

Anyways, I don't mind to plateau for a week. It will probably take me 6 months to reach my target anyways, so 1 week more or less does not make much of a difference.

I agree. Sometimes you just need a week "off" to focus on other things. Life is all about balance and trying to achieve it. You have a good attitude Tri.

Thanks cate & LaMaria! I really appreciate your advice & support! :)

Speaking about balance, since I am removing a lot of things from my life that used to give me pleasure (smoking, drinking, fast food, etc), I thought it would be nice to think of some positive things that I want to add:

Rewards for hitting weight goals:
1. Weight < 92.5 kg: Exercise mat + some extra training weights
2. Weight < 90.0 kg: Snorkeling mask (nice item to have for my holidays in Tenerife; I place it here, so that I will need to push myself hard to get it in time (but it is still realistic))
3. Weight < 87.5 kg: TBD
4. Weight < 85.0 kg: TBD
5. Weight < 82.5 kg: Ice skates
6. Weight < 80.0 kg: New running clothes
7. Weight < 77.5 kg: TBD
8. Weight < 75.0 kg: A lot of new clothes (my goal weight)

Rewards for finishing challenges:
1. 100 days no smoking: TBD
2. 100 days no drinking: TBD
3. 100 days no fast food: TBD

So, now that I have a lot to look forward to, let's go home, change my clothes and go running, I want to hit those goals ASAP! :)

That's a pretty good idea. I hadn't considered "rewarding" myself for hitting my goals and I have yet to set tiny goals for myself. I'd probably feel a lot more accomplished if I did something along those lines.

And I'm already needing new clothes after losing 30lbs. All of my pants want to fall down and the other day after using the bathroom, I went to tighten my belt and couldn't get it as tight as I wanted. I looked down and realized I had my belt on the smallest hole already.... I need a smaller belt now! :p

oo
I think your reward system is a great idea, Tri.
Yay for you, too, Mowens needing a new belt!

Day 18 of no smoking. I notice that a lot of activities are getting easier. I live on the fourth floor of my apartment and we have no elevator, so I have to do a lot of stairs every day, and I notice that it is not so hard anymore. Running is also starting to get a lot easier. That got me thinking about what this means for the future. I know that between 2 weeks after quitting, and in the months after it, your lungs start seriously cleaning up, and it becomes easier to breath. Lung capacity may increase by up to 30%. That is a huge gift, I gladly give up that dirty habit in return for that!

An interesting consequence that I just thought of yesterday (while running) is that you will be able to burn more calories per hour, because you can run faster. I mean, when you lose weight, you become faster, but you also burn less calories per hour (because you don't have to carry less weight). But when your lungs function better, you can run faster and burn more. Training itself can also increase the ability for your body to take up oxygen, reaching the same effect.
While smoking, I ran about 9.5 kilometers per hour on average (when running 8-10 km), which translates to about 950 calories per hour on my current weight. I expect that I can expect that to increase soon to 10.5 - 12 km/h (without taking weight loss into account); so about 1050 - 1200 calories per hour.

By the way my record for the 10k is about 43.5 minutes, back when I weighed about 85 kg. That is about 13.8 km per hour on average. So, if I take into account all factors; when I am done losing weight (so weighing around 75 kg), when my lungs have cleared up and when I have trained consistently for at least 6 months, I am quite sure that I can do the 10k in less than 40 minutes, and if I keep training after that I may be able to do it in 36-38 minutes.

I am looking forward to becoming this fit (and I will appreciate every step towards that goal).

Tri, I got biceps and quadriceps mostly. My shoulders grew and all. But Im stugling with belly still. I want some packs :D. Problem is I am not in gym but I should be. I am only training with my weights at home and on bar in nearby park

Back in ancient times when I was an athlete a few guys on my high school team had been smoking since early high school or late jr high. They started to lose a few steps compared to those of us who didn't smoke. Then when I was a college athlete....nobody smoked...the smokers had been culled....hmmm. I also think that people who quit really start to get that step back pretty quickly....Hang in there dude.

@Andrej - Cool that you are making progress! Perhaps there are some exercises that you could do at home to train your abs, so that you don't have to go to the gym?

@brawny77 - that is interesting! I hope to get it back ASAP too! Thanks for the encouragement! :)

I am around 95-96 kg now, 2-3 kg down from my starting weight 2 months ago (July 1). My lowest weight was 93 kg. Like I mentioned I gained some weight after quitting smoking. Not a lot though, and I think that I can get back.

I want to get back on track now. To start, I will rededicate myself to 3 of the habits that I started building some time ago:

1. Not drinking alcohol
2. Not eating fast food
3. Running 3-4 times every week

These habits are the ones that I expect to produce the most results. I have multiple reasons to do every one of these, not just losing weight.

Anyways, I will just keep on going (and keep posting here) until I am successful. No amount of setbacks will cause me to give up! Every time something does not go like I want it to go, I will reflect on it, learning whatever I can from it, so that difficulties will make me stronger, not weaker!

The way I see it: as long as I stick around here I'll at least avoid giving up and going up beyond where I used to be. And I WILL end up understanding my body and mind well enough to get AND stay fit.

Wooh, I am sub-95 kg again: 94.8 kg. It's nice to see the scale moving in the right direction again after quitting smoking (3 weeks now! :)). I am aiming to lose 2.5 kg per month. The next goal is to reach 92.5 kg. However, I must say (in case it is not clear already), my weight goals are not as important as my habit-changing goals. Weight loss, to me, should be the result of changing my lifestyle from an relatively unhealthy one in the direction of an increasingly healthy one.

I made a thread for every one of the 3 lifestyle changes (that I mentioned in my previous post in this thread) that I am making right now. This worked great for quitting smoking, so I figured I might as well try it for this challenge. I think I like it, because it makes me feel more accountable to do my best, and if I fail I can write about it, which helps me get back on track as soon as possible.

I do the same in this thread, and I will keep posting here (of course).

My weight was 94.5 kg this morning. Only 1.5 kg to go to reach my lowest weight of 93 kg since I started losing, before I quit smoking.

I hope to weight less than 90 kg before the end of this month. It's a challenge, but I think it is possible (and even if I don't make it I am sure that I will have made progress).

Thank you! It suddenly came upon me that health is kind of important. I mean, being healthy, strong and not dying young are worth a bit of effort, I would say. ;)

I burned 4000-4500 calories today, and ate 2500-3000 calories. So, the deficit of the day is at least 1000 calories. At more than planned, but as you may imagine, after running 13.5 kilometers I was a bit hungry. I ate only healthy foods though. :)

If I have time this evening, I will cycle, hopefully for about 25-30 kilometers (burning 1000 calories). Most of the day I will be busy with work, and perhaps also this evening. Anyways, let's get started so that I will be done as soon as possible.

So, yesterday I cycled 45 kilometers and I burned over 4000 calories in total throughout the day. However, I also think I ate something similar. Only healthy food.

Today I will go running again. Looking forward to it!

Well done! I don't think my stomach's big enough for that amount of healthy food - unlike unhealthy stuff.
