I want to follow healthy food diarists

Hi I find it provocative reading peoples diaries when they eat so badly. I just want to tell them what to eat and take over. I know this is a bad tendency so i don't want to do it to them because they get stroppy and may give up and get depressed.

I would like to follow and support other food diaries of people who are trying to eat really healthy food. And share recipes with them. What i mean by healthy is essentially high in fruit and vegetables and low in fat and sweets.

My ultimate goal is to have a diet with no sugar at all ever again. Well as a general type of diet to live by. I am trying to change my food habits. I will probably slip up from time to time but essentially i want to stay away from my weaknesses. I find it the easiest way. This is the best way for me to keep my weight down.

So if anyone is having a diet that's not full of cheats and treats and generally wants to stay focussed on eating healthy nutritious food, sing out.

You and me both. I could do without sugar for the rest of my life. It's caused me nothing but grief.

No sugar at all? In that case, you will have a problem with the fruit, since most fruit is rather high in fructose.

Additionally, eliminating ALL sugars (not just refined) will wreak havoc with your insuline levels just as badly as over-consumption.

It's impossible to eliminate all sugars, of course. But yes, I could live the rest of my life without grains/flour and yes, limiting fruits with high sugar content. I don't know where you're getting this 'insulin will wreak havoc' business from. Do you have a source on that?

Arike, when i say sugar i don't mean fruit. I mean anything derived from sugarcane sugar or beet sugar. And i also mean honey, and syrup and that sort of thing.

How can people in any way confuse fruit with sugar. That's just silly.

San, when i say sugar i don't mean fruit. I mean anything made from sugarcane sugar or beet sugar. And i also mean honey, and syrup and that sort of thing because it too is practically 100% sugar. Fruit is not near 100% sugar.

Interestingly though, i am growing sugar cane and i think that would be acceptable. It is not afterall junk food. Its closer to fruit as far as I'm concerned.

I am not confusing fruit with sugar. I am pointing out that fruit contains fructose, which is fruit sugar. Some fruit contains little other than fructose.

While fructose miles better than refined sugar, it is still sugar, and sky high in calories if over-consumed.

Honey on the other hand, in small amounts, is supposedly rather healthy.

Saying that you don't want to eat any sugar, but then talking about eating loads of fruit is, as you called it yourself, silly. You're also entirely neglecting the fact that some foods, even though they might contain sugar (like honey) are actually healthy if consumed sensibly. Same goes for beet sugar - it's actually one of the healthier options.

Aiieke:

For the insuline part - here's just a quick quote from a medical website:

You need insulin to keep blood sugar levels from rising too high, but having too much insulin can kill you. Excess insulin makes you fat by causing fat to enter fat cells, your brain to tell you that you are hungry, and your liver to make fat from extra calories. It causes strokes and heart attacks by causing clots, raising triglycerides and lowering the good HDL cholesterol. Insulin promotes oxidation that converts the bad LDL cholesterol to oxidized LDL that forms plaques in arteries. High levels of insulin cause your kidneys to retain salt and raise blood pressure. The best ways to lower insulin are to avoid being overweight, restrict foods made with flour or added sugars, and eat fruits and root vegetables with other foods to keep blood sugar levels from rising too high.

And before you jump on me, yes, I know it says that you should eat fruit and root vegetables, but I said that leaving out 'all sugars, refined or not', would wreak havoc. Which it would.

Your idea is actually a good one - fruit low in fructose and cut out the refined stuff. All I'm saying is that the statement 'sugar is bad' is a dangerous thing to make, just as dangerous as saying 'fruit sugar isn't real sugar'. It is, and too much isn't healthy, and certainly won't help people to lose weight.

It is important to remember that this needs to become a way of life, not a diet that you go on and off of. In that sense it is important for people to include treats, because totally switching your diet from your current way of eating is not going to result in long term sustainability or success. Sugar and treats aren't bad- over consumption of them is (same with anything else).

I agree. Obviously different things work for different people but I feel people who find a way to incorporate the food they enjoy into their diet in moderation may do better in the long run compared to people who are depriving themselves.

But hey that's just my opinion and it's not based on any particular evidence.

San the point of differentiating between refine sugar and fruit is that fruits do not make you binge. Certainly they do not make me binge. Refined sugar is used in cakes and icecreams lollies and desserts. This is what i mean by quitting sugar. I thought it would be obvious what i meant.

Fruits on the other hand include fibre and vitamins and trace elements. Why would anyone feel the need to give up fruit. Does anyone have a problem eating too much fruit. Is fruit empty calories. No.

Honey and syrup and treacle are basically emtpy calories. There isn't much in a teaspoon of sugar that you can't easily get elsewhere and honey doesn't add any bulk to what you eat. But it does help you retain the taste for highly sweetened foods. The point of not eating sugar is to get over the taste for highly sweetened foods because they lead to eating more and more. Fruit doesn't do this.

I had hoped for a bit of common sense.

For my part, this is a diet i want ot do for life. I believe I can do it for life where as i know i can't eat bits of chocolate or the odd piece of cake without falling prey to the return of old bad habits.

Well this is my way of managing my diet. It works for me.

Note also i drink a glass of wine a day even though there is sugar in it nad although its dry wine, its still quite sweet. However, there is no addictive quality in drinking wine for me but i know there is for others and it doesn't lead me to binge or want cake either. In fact, in a restaurant, once i start eating dessert, i can't continue drinking wine. This is all why some people should quit wine and why i should quit sugar. As I have quit cigarettes. I never could have just one cigarette a day either. I have lived long enough to know how this works.
