I Used to be Fat

I didn't see a thread for this show, so I figured I'd make one. However, if one already exists, disregard this post. Anyways, I wanted to know what the forum thought of this show.

Produced by MTV the show takes "fatties" and makes them "Ex-fatties" through healthy eating habits and lots of exercise. The teens that partake in the show have around 3 months (or their summer) to lose as much as they can.

My question is, what do you think of this show? Are the methods effective? The nutrition tips helpful? Is it sending a positive message to other kids?

I have mixed feelings for a lot of the shows...such as biggest loser..etc.

I haven't seen this show, but I question what happens after the 3 months are up, and they don't have someone encouraging them to exercise or helping them eat healthy. Normally the weight loss is quite drastic, and through quite difficult/hardcore means...I just wonder when it's over, and they return to their lives, with the stressors and triggers that may have caused their poor eating/sedentary lifestyles, if they still have the coping mechanisms and tools to prevent them from sliding back into their previous lifestyle.

I think these shows are awesome, and gets people to a healthy goal, but I hope they also teach the people how to overcome barriers/bumps in their regular life so that they can success in a regular environment...

what do you think?
I might have to check that show out! I see previews for it all the time!

I personally have never like the kind of exploitation that MTV employs in their shows directing at teens (teen mom, this show, etc.)...

That being said, my wife watches this show occasionally, and I am subjected to it as a bystander. It's not too bad. The tips about excesise and what not are good. I did notice, that it's very specific to the person that is being "treated" (the workouts, the diet plan) so if anything, it shows there is no "right fit" for everyone with regard to eating and dieting!

This show is better than the biggest loser. because if a kid in this show losses lets say 6-7 lb in a week, it would be good. But in The Biggest loser, losing that much weight is considered a failure. I USED to be Fat is motivational for me because when they lose all the weight, they look so good, guys and girls. So it keeps me motivated and lets me know that once i lose my weight, i will probably look as good as them.

If it's on MTV, it's crap. It's as simple as that.

Whaaaaat? How can you say that about a television station that has given us entertainment like Total Request Live with Carson Daly...Jersey Shore (and Pauly Shore)...The Hills...Room Raiders...Road Rules / Real World Challenge...MTV Sports with Dan Cortese...Cribs...Parental Control...Viva La Bam...The Ashlee Simpson Show...Bromance...From G's to Gents...The Andy Milonakis Show...Daria...My Super Sweet 16...Spankin' New Music Week...The Andy Dick Shooooh my God, why do I know of all these horrible MTV shows?

SIGH

SIGH

LOL i almost forgot about TRL and bromance. Man what happened to the good old days of celebrity deathmatch or jackass and funny shows like that.

Personally I have seen two episodes. One kid in particular, Jordan, seemed to have done well after the show ended. Finding a job at a gym and what not. But I think that was due to his trainer being a father figure he never had and trying to emulate what he was seeing. Which is good in a why because he is keeping himself surrounded by fitness after his trainer left. The other episode didn't seem as effective. But it seemed different from other weight loss shows.

That's my 2 cents but others thoughts are always welcome.

I personally love that show.
I find myself very motivated when I watch it, I got it going on replay on my laptop on the MTV website, if im in bed and its late at night and I find myself trying not to go to the fridge and go ballistic, I just click on the show and there ya go...I stay away and I imagine myself looking good if I keep up with my routine and healthy eating.

Yes, they have a free personal trainer, someone in their face for three months pushing them, and we don't, yes we have our support such as friends and family but it's different when you have someone knocking on your door at 5am making your butt go work out, in that area i am jelous :p

I really do love this show and I suggest you guys watch it, dont judge it because it's mtv..and for once mtv is doing it right, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and probably motivating a lot of young kids out there to get going and get healthy.

Thanks for proving my point. ;)

And no, I won't give these shows a try. I HATE these 'reality' TV shows which have nothing in common with reality. You know that these shows are produced, right? Orchestrated from the first minute. Like the one episode of biggest Loser where they showed the girl that had kept all the weight off, and later it turned out that she'd had a gastric bypass after she'd left the house.

So no, thanks, I pass on these shows, I don't find them motivating at all, more embarrassing to be honest.

I feel bad for season 3 winner of the biggest loser gained all his weight back. They interviewed one of the contestants and he said that they lost a lot of weight by dehydrating themselves to the point of pissing blood! talk about doing the opposite of what the show should be about.

So I watched the first episode of "I was fat in highschool" ooor something like that...

Ok...firstly, I balled...totally! I found it motivating, sad, and familiar...it was the first episode, and the girl had to fight a lot of obstacles (mostly her mother) to come to her goal. She looked great at the end, and lost an amazing amount of weight in 111days. She gained confidence, and overcame her need to mindlessly eat, and knew how to include a healthy diet...

My biggest concern is that her target was to lose between 6-7lbs/week for the entire duration...she did it- but only because she was at the gym with her trainer several times a day, and was consciously aware of what she was eating..

Here's my problem...if she tries to lose weight again, will she expect that 6-7lbs/week loss is normal? Because that is not normal...and I'm sure she wouldn't be able to attain it if she wanted to go to school, work, and completed other life duties.

I'm just so mixed about these shows...they are good, and motivational, but they set unrealistic expectations for these people to uphold outside of this MTV life... Balancing work, school, chores, etc. often doesn't leave you with 3-4 hours a day to exercise.

I hope behind the scenes they're teaching these people that this is not a normal weightloss routine, and how to cope with real life demands, etc. Because it would be nice to see them carry through outside of the show and be successful!

When the guys and girls get to their weight they look so good!....but ive noticed that they have a lot of lose skin!.yuk!..yeah, i think they train like 6-7 hrs a day. too much for me. i would die.

A reality show on MTV for teens? Can't say it's too high on my radar.

say what karaoke!

I absolutely LOVE this show. I watch it every week and am very sad that it only has one episode left. I find it very motivating :) If they can do it, so can I.

the show is definitely motivating. I watched one yesterday, actually, and the girl had been cheating in her dieting, and the weight wasn't coming off. Once she changed her attitude and committed, she dropped like 45 pounds. and they showed that she was able to keep it off while starting school.

the episode i watched anyway, kind of showed the determination that you need to really lose weight, not JUST in exercise, but in eating too. it reminded me that i need to watch my eating if i want to get smaller. it was good in that way. but i do agree, that losing a pound-a-day (as this girl's goal was) is unrealistic if you are living your everyday life, and these shows tend to leave that part out, leaving the rest of us disappointed with a 2 pound weight loss in 7 days (which is AWESOME!... i've never dropped 2 pounds in a week lol)

I've only actually see one episode of that show; the episode featuring this kid named Jordan, who ended up losing 70-some pounds and getting a job at a gym.
It was pretty interesting to watch his transition, but as far as how informative it was, I didn't learn much.
His trainer was a douche.
I mean, he was a fox, but a definite douche.

Honestly this show was what started my motivation to get healthier. I understand it`s not necessarily the best way to go about it (these kids are working out up to 6 and 8 hours a day) and of course they have the trainers and such.

But I took it more as if they can get these results in 3 or 4 months than I should be able to lose half that amount in twice the time on my own. I`m not looking to lose 90 pounds in 3 months but take a slower-steadier lifestyle change and drop the weight that way.

It is motivating to see how great they look after and I found I can take the tips and tricks out of it that help me at the same time realizing that I will have to do it in a slower way - which is ok with me :)
