Could your neighborhood really be so unsafe that jogging at 6:30 a.m. would be hugely dangerous? Seriously, where do you live? I used to live in California and I can't think of a place that would honestly be that bad... I'm not saying you're wrong, maybe you're right.
So about the video, do you have a garage? Or an outdoor area where you could plug something in?
How about jumping rope? Seriously. You could do it behind your mobile home maybe. It is a really good workout.
OK - you're finding a lot of reasons to say you can't...
If you want this - you have to start finding ways to say you CAN
i like that idea... its not the same as running though is it? it wont burn more calories?
Everyone here gave you great suggestions on what you need to do to continue seeing improvements, the rest is up to you. You need to ask yourself how bad you want it and if you want it bad enough to do what it takes to get there. I wish you all the luck!
Jump rope for 20 minutes straight sometime, and see how that feels for you. It's really very good exercise, it's not the same as running but cardio is cardio is cardio, right? As long as you get your heart rate up, you're doing it right.
What about a gym at your school? MDM asked that before. Also, maybe there's a local YMCA or rec center.
As for your eating... I understand how hard it can be to eat healthfully on a tight budget. But just say no to McDonalds! Almost anything is better than that. If fast food really is your best option (you're 16, you probably don't really know how to cook, it can be tough) then try the healthier stuff on offer. Subway, or a taco stand and pack in lots of veggies, or KFC with all the skin removed -- stuff like that. Do some googling and find out what your healthier fast food options are.
With regard to jumping rope: some cardio is better than others, but at the end of the day, what really matters is that you're getting your heart rate up and keeping it up. TRUST me, jumping rope gets your heart rate up. You've seen it in movies and on TV, right? People in gyms jumping rope and stuff to warm up for a workout?
Go to Toys-R-Us, pick up a jump rope for like $5, and give it a try! You'll find it's very, very challenging. I promise.
Running for an hour and a half one day per week is not better than running 3x per week, it's not as good.
Well, being a mom, I can ABSOLUTELY see her point...I wouldn't let my kid do it...
That being said, yes, jumping rope could work - I would do it longer then 20 minutes though - you want your heart rate up for at least 30 preferably 45 minutes.
I definitely see your point, you are trying to look at options, and the options we've thrown out are ones you can't use, but you need to look at these ideas as general options - what can you take from here and adapt to your situation?
I've heard that you should change up your routine too - and I do that with (what little strength training I do) as well as with my cardio, but that's because I've been doing the same cardio for a long time - you don't have a long time before you reach your goals. Your new plan can last you through this.
