I look like a twig, help me out! (Don't laugh at me)

Hey guys, so first post... I started going to the gym last week, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm 17, turning 18 in a couple months, about 180cm, so just under 5'11", and I weigh 161lbs. I look like a twig, and I've got random fat around my body.

As my second week comes to an end, I've noticed that my arms have gotten a bit strong, and a little more defined, but I've been using machines, mostly. I just found out that free-weights 6-8 lifts, at high weight is better for building mass.

So yeah, here are my pics. I really just don't want to be a twig, and I have like man boobs, too.

Anyways, here are the pics...

I'm going to start buy Whey Protein, anything else I should get? What are the best routines to do at the gym?

Hey there,
you have a much better platform to work with than most people, so consider your self fortunate.

If you're looking to gain weight (which is what you should, in my opinion) you need to EAT.

Eat healthy and in calorie excess. This means finding out what your daily caloric needs are and consuming more than that.

As for lifting programs, the big things to include would be deadlifts, shoulder/bench press and other big muscle exercises. There are plenty of good programs available free online. Check the weight lifting section on this forum.

Agreed with first poster, you have a great base to work from.

If you read some of the weight training 101 posts and other things around there you can pick up some great tips for specific foods and training, do you have any goals?

In terms of goals, I just want to look better. I hate being skeleton, and I know it's in my genes to get bigger, as both my dad and brother were smaller than me, but have really nice muscles now.

I don't want to be jacked, I just want to fill up. I don't want to be skinny and cut, either. Maybe like an extra inch or two (I don't know if that's really a lot, but just thicker arms) around my arms, and having nicer pecks, instead of my saggy man boobs. In term of abs, I want them nice, but they don't have to be ripped, either. Even a nice, hard, outline is good for me.

I also want to get stronger. I benched for the first time last night. I don't really know what my max is, but I was doing about 85-90lbs for my reps. I did about 5 sets of 6 reps, but in another thread, I read to do 3 sets of 10 instead. I did struggle near the end, but it wasn't horrible or anything. I'm going to guess my max is about 110-120.

In terms of how I want my body to look, something like:

(sorry, not enough posts to upload pic)
That's how I'd look in my dreams. I don't really need to be as cut, but thickness wise, that's it.

But I really appreciate the base comments, makes me fee a lot more confident.

Right so your basically wanting to improve strength and overall looks? This would probably be bulking.

A large part of successfully doing this is actually your diet, it's the most important thing to get right! Look around the forums searching for the right food types and existing diets, then work from there.

You can find various links helping you with all the vital info, here is one...

(gah, can't link URL's without 15 posts, let me troll the forums and then post them hehe)

An important method of weight training is to not do such a heavy weight that you struggle to even finish your set, start with something you and your body is confident with, every week, try adding more and more weight, see how your body responds to this.

Read and digest my friend, it will work out :)

Goodluck!

Yeah, I've been reading up on everything :p Thank for the advice from both of you :)

Today is the second day of my new diet. I had breakfast (Oatmeal with 2 scoops of whey protein, so about 32g), big lunch, probably weighed a few pounds, lol. Anticipating dinner :).

I decided to wait until tomorrow to go back to the gym, because I like the MWF ABA MWF BAB format a lot. So this WF will be AB, then next week will be week one, so MWF ABA.
I'll weigh myself on Monday to see if I've put on any weight.

you dont NEED extra ab work on your off days if your squatting and deadlifting with fullbody workouts...mayb 1 extra ab day on sat or sun will do you good though ;D
if you feel your abs are weak, throw in some russian twists, full hanging leg raises, ab wheel of death =3, hanging crunches
