I heard you don't like aerobics

I think one of the other problems with aerobics (especially organized classes) is that people tend to over do it. If 30 minutes is good then 60 minutes is better and 90 minutes is even better and if 2 times a week is good then 3 or 4 or 6 times a week are even better. Many inidividuals follow this philosophy of more volume is better and when they fail to see improvement give up completely. Or there are those who overdo it to the point of stress fractures and unbalanced hormone levels, etc. Bottom line there is a lot of bad advice going around out there and a lot of "trainers" and class leaders that don't know what they are doing. Just because it hurts or makes yousweat profusely, does not mean it is "effective".
Classes are normally pre-booked so you cannot horse around in the manner described. I have never heard of such misinformation, where did you read this?

LOL. I did this, though I didn't fail..i did lose a ****load of fat, but muscle too.

You don't like it because it's unpleasant to do....or because you feel it's ineffective?

It's just funny cause I know several trainers and absolutely NONE of them will come with me on my long-haul bike rides...they seem to avoid cardio like it's the plague and when asked, they merely reply "I don't like it".

From my perspective it gets your heart-rate up, burns come calories and is good for respiratory/circulatory. I haven't read a single diet book that doesn't prescribe it. I recently met a guy who swears aerobics is detrimental on account (as he explains) that it teaches your body to actually store fat...so you have the storge/endurance for these long bouts of cardio. Anything to that?
 
So you presumably ram weight-lifting down anyone's throat? That seems to be an attitude problem prevalent round here.

TM is a certified personal trainer, now with "common sense" when working with his clients.......what do you "really" think? Do you "think" its possible particular to the "client" or members on the forum, he "would" suggest cardio (or another form) to a member IF it were appropriate?

Absolutely. I dont really look forward to it, but I do do it because it helps burn calories and isnt too taxing. I assume we are talking about steady state running, biking, etc.

I just dont do aerobics because I dont like it. I feel like we are talking about the aerobic classes where headbands are prevalent? (lol) Mountain biking is something I got into recently before it got cold and it really is an ass kicker.

Nope I just said that I, as in myself, do not like it. I dont partake in it. To each his/her own though. If you like it, then do it.

Thank you for some of your responses. Whilst there are good posters, undoubtedly there are also thugs and bullies present just like there are a few rotten eggs in a basket.

The question isn't, "Do we like aerobics."

Instead the question is, "Do you like aerobics?"

And only you can answer that question.

In my opinion, if you like doing aerobics (such as dancing, doing a quick cycle run, doing steps on blocks, etc), then do it. It's better than doing nothing.

You shouldn't care what advantages or disadvantages others tell you about aerobics. Instead you should care about what advantages (or not) aerobics provide for you. Aerobics, however you define it (class setting, or making your body use oxygen by running or going through other motion), has pros and cons depending on your overall goal.

If it's fun, do it. If it isn't, stop, and don't do it again. Fitness isn't about what others do for you, it's about what you do for you. Only you can get into shape, not other people. We can debate all day about what aerobics can or cannot do for oneself, but in the end, we're all still sitting down on our butts doing nothing but pointless bickering.

When I take my bike out for my long-haul ride...I ride along the mountain tops looking out over the city. The fresh air, ipod music, the hours of sweating, the endorphins...and just enjoying the terrain. At times it feels like heaven and I dread the day I can no longer do it. Despite my HR averaging 145-155 and a total caloric burn sometimes exceeding 2,000....I don't think of my riding as aerobics, I think of it as theraputic, a sport, an escape and definitely a fun way to help melt the fat off my waist. I've watched my shadow (cast upon the ground when I ride with my back to the sun) invert from pear-shaped to triangle shape...the "love handles" just got pedaled away.

Dallen's right, you just gotta find what works for you and what you enjoy....it's the only way to get long-term results.

That may be true. The body normally releases HGH in response to exercise. HGH is a hormone that signals the body to burn fat and grow muscle. However, beyond some volume level, cortisone is released as well. Cortisone signals the body to store fat and catabolize muscle. So to maximize fat loss and muscle retention, you must find the activity level, both in volume and intensity that maximizes HGH release and minimizes cortisone release. That level depends on your individual genetics, fitness level, diet, age, time of the month, rest levels, etc.

I can say without reservation and hesitation, I do not like cardio. However, Last year at Christmas I remember my wife asked me what I wanted. I told her an upright recumbant bike with a back rest that has a gauge to enter personal information, and has a heart rate monitor, calories burned (though there not all that accurate), etc.

I knew at the time this was going to be a psychological battle with this new ($300) bike. I was willing to face it. I was willing to win it.

This was going to be a battle between my personal dislike v benefits to my goal quest, and I have proven to myself that I was tougher then my dislike for different forms of cardio. There is a lesson here to learn, my friends.

I remember looking at it, saying (laughing):

Dang thing has no brain, time to train, to see if it will enhance my goal compaign.

Damn this thing looks stupid sitting there. I will probably look stupid riding the dang thing, BUT, I wont look stupid when off of it....

I battled this bike for many months, and even put two pics in my garage (one of myself and one of the person I wanted to be like). I usually put the person I wanted to be like right in front of the bike, and pedalled my @ss off trying to go get it. If the session on the bike (and being honest) was good, I would move my pic closer to the goal pic, if it wasnt, I moved it back.

I remember taking the goal pic down, and replacing it with my own. Think of the WORST feeling during training. NOTHING replaced the feelings I had at that moment.

The feelings surmounted during your quest, are NOTHING compared to the feelings you get when you reach your goal (s).

I won the pschological battle with something I do but do not like, and so can you.
