I don't know where to start

I heard this morning that a dear old friend of mine died yesterday. She was 65. We started nurse training together in 1969 and have been friends ever since. There are lots of happy memories and laughs to look back on, but the one I remember with a smile today is when we were junior pros, just starting our training and the lowest of the low. An elderly, confused patient was standing on his bed and throwing his poo at us. My pal yelled to me 'Keep ducking and diving Poll. He's bound to run out of ammunition before long.' It was one of the funniest things... afterwards of course.

Sorry to hear about your friend Polly, you have my respect for remembering the fun times right away.

HELP

Can someone explain to old 'not too bright' Polly, why Coke Zero is such a no no? I only drink that. Other cokes have too much sugar in them for me, but all the values on the side of the zero tins are nil or trace. Is it high in sodium and/or potassium?

Any kind of soda (including bubbly mineral water if I remember correctly) is bad for bone density if consumed in large amounts, anything bubbly makes your body more acidic but what most people are on about is the artificial sweetener. As far as I can tell there are signs that sweeteners may influence blood sugar but it isn´t proven to be more unhealthy than sugar. Except of course that it´s less calorific and less bad for your teeth (except for the aforementioned acidity, of course). Exactly why people get so worked up about it, I don´t know. Possibly something to do with flu shots. Or chemtrails...

I believe Coke Zero contains aspartame which is bad.

"Claims have been made that aspartame is related to health effects ranging from mild problems such as headache, dizziness, digestive symptoms, and changes in mood, to more serious health issues such as Alzheimer disease, birth defects, diabetes, Gulf War syndrome, attention deficit disorders, Parkinson disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and seizures. However, studies done to date have not found any consistent evidence of harm."
You can read more about aspartame here http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/aspartame

fake sugar found indrinks like coke zero cause insulin spikes because it tricks the body into thinking your getting sugar, not terribly harmful if your a normal weight but spikes in insulin promote fat storage, which is definitely not what your looking for when your trying to drop a few pounds.

In the end it´s a highly processed thing which doesn´t count as food, but drinking some of it now and then won´t do you any harm if you aren´t already suffering from health problems.

Many thanks.
Aspertame This is an old enemy of mine. My daughter had epilepsy, which aspertame made worse. It was very difficult finding drinks and food without it in. We rarely had convenience food. I even make my own burgers, but things like baked beans and squash were loaded with it.

Sorry about your loss.. :hug2:

I agree with everyone about the junk and aspertame!

I have even stopped using splenda.

I also went back to all things REAL.. Like butter...Just have to watch amounts and how/when used..

:seeya: So glad to be back here! ** I have missed y'all! ;)

It's nice to have you back Stacy. Did you have a good Christmas? Ours was lovely, very quiet and just as we like it.
Re Butter: I was talking to a lady on the tills in ASDA and she told me that she has given up all the spreads and gone back to good old butter and her aches and pains are far better. I followed her example and have to admit it has worked

Lots of fun in the pool yesterday, but by gum was it cold when I got back into the open air. Quick dash across the car park, heater on full blast and headed for home with rockets in my socks. I wish someone would invent a car heater that hears up immediately. That would win a Nobel prize for sure

Last night, I found myself tending to go foraging in the fridge, so today I am loading it up with fruit and other healthy nibbles. Will also sort out a really unflattering- and I am spoilt for choice, I have so many- photo of myself to stick slap bang eye level on the fridge door.

Butter: Exactly!

There was more crazy talk the other day about what happens to "Country Crock" once heated on high and my goodness! Turns into melted plastic right before your eyes! :svengo:

No thanks...I will stick with Butter with it's 1 ingredient listed... lol

lol at photo on fridge.. Need to do that myself! ;)

Nice to hear you had fun again - and let´s just say the cold afterwards helped you burn more calories ;) Don´t be too hard on yourself with those pictures, you are sure to look better than you think!

:iagree: with the above. I'm really glad you are doing aquaerobics. It is great exercise & lots of fun, depending on the company. I have a feeling that you would have fun anyway & liven it up with your sense of humour.

Morning ladies. Nice to hear from you on this cold, foggy morning with sleet promised for later on in the day. I love snow, but this wet old sleet is another business altogether.
It’s funny what you were telling me about butter Stacy. We took a load to the council tip yesterday morning. The lady in charge of it gives the impression that she is Hitler in knickers: ‘DON’T PUT THAT PLASTIC IN HOUSEHOLD. PUT IT IN THE CLEARLY MARKED PLASTIC ONLY SKIP’ etc. I always say good morning how are you? to her, she’s only human after all, and doing a nasty old job with only a hut to keep her and the men out of the wet and cold. We were the only ones there, usually you have to queue up so we must have hit a sweet spot. She was having her lunch and offered us a cup of coffee and got the men to unload our car. I noticed that she had a packet of butter on the table and I told her what you had told me. She then showed me a list she had got from her doctor listing all the additives in spreads. It went on for pages! It’s good old butter for me from now on
View attachment 23414 I defy anyone to look at this picture and not smile. It is on the front of the 'Country File' calendar and worth buying for that alone

Awww what a cute little guy! Short (or actually: no) ingredient lists are my friends too: keep it simple and your body knows what to do. Well, mostly, anyway.

:smilielol5: Polly... (Hitler in knickers).........

A to the Men!

Yes, I pay so much attention now to the "ingredient list now!!"

Most of us have, whether we admit or no, a skirt, dress, pair of trousers etc which once fitted but now doesn't. We hang onto them (in my case for years) promising ourselves that we will get around to slimming back into them. I have several at the back of my wardrobe and today I got into all but one of them, and some are quite slack. We go away for 5 days in Torquay the first week of March and I shall be taking some 'new' clothes which are actually a few years old.
I was absolutely tickled pink to get into my old velour jogging suit I used to love to wear in the winter evenings. The dog and I would cuddle up on the sofa and watch a Sherlock Holmes DVD. The wind, rain and sometimes snow would be driving at the window and Sherlock would say 'Come Watson, the games afoot' And Polly and Dolly were in clover. Hoping hubby wouldn't get out of the bath too soon and disturb us.
It's a very true saying... 'Nothing tastes as good, as slim feels' I'm not exactly slim, but certainly slimmer
