I can't do deadlifts

I really can't, I can't say why. My back keeps curling up and I just give up. Is the weight supposed to scrape my legs or is it supposed to be away from me? Can I use dumbells instead? This is really upsetting, ruined my whole workout, I just got frustrated as hell.

Anyone know of a good video demonstration of deadlifts?

actually there aren't any on this thread, you probably mean on the deadlift Q&A thread or this forum in general

LT,

It can take time and practice to get it right. If your back is curling up you may want to start with lower back exercises first. (ie back extension, good mornings) and as evolution suggested practice with the bar and gradually increase the weight. When I started I used very little weight until I felt comfortable with my form. I also asked another guy in the gym to watch my form and give pointers. This is odd for me considering I typically speak to on one while working out.

Anyway...

The bar IS supposed to scrape your shins. I have a trail on my shins where hair does not grow, but you get used to it or you can put padding there. I prefer to let the beotch bleed. Sorry for the graphic detail there.

You can use dumbbells to get used to the motion as well.

Check out the deadlift Q&A thread.

thank you guys, next time I will try lowering the weight and sticking my butt out, but I only want to do the traditional deadlift, not the RDL or stiff legged ones.
