I am exercisally challenged

Ok im 23 years old and I have never done a serious workout once in my life, I need to get into shape bad before it's too late. I have new motivation and think now is the time. I eat poorly usually just twice a day plus junk food, and alot of the meals I eat are fast food or frozen dinners. I'm 6' and weigh about 220. I'm not really fat but I have a just and lots of flab on my upper body. My legs are not fat at all really. I just want a better build, nothing impossible, I don't need to be ripped, I just want to know the best and fastest weigh to achieve this. I am willing to commit alot of time but I do have a full time job. I am also very poor so I can't sign up for a gym right now.

Can your budget stretch to a set of dumbbells? If you had those then your choices increase greatly. Exercises you can do at home include, press ups, squats, lunges and dips. If you had dumbells you could add lifts like military press, curls, rows, deadlifts and also add weight to the squats and lunges.

Are you trying to lose weight at all?

thanks, I may be able to get some weights what size should I start with how much reps etc. and how fast can i increase it. I dont really want to lose more than 10 or 15 pounds if that.

You can lift all day long, but it'll do you little or no justice. The most important thing to keep an eye on when you want to lose weight is your diet. If you eat more than you should, then you're going to gain weight. Of course, by exercising, you may burn this excess calories off and lose weight, but you're going to gain all that weight back once you're done with exercising because of your diet.

With a proper diet, and exercise, you can permanently lose weight, and stay in shape. You're going to have to start eating right, counting calories, and staying focused in your exercising.

To understand more about diet, your daily calories, and exercising, I recommend reading the various faqs around here. Basically, find your BMR, subtract a good 500 from it, you calories shouldn't go over that amount.

To know what kind of food to eat, just follow this advice: eat things that you can imagine growing naturally in the wild before. I found this advice from the book, "The New Rules of Lifting," which I recommend you getting. Just think about what you have in your hand and think about where it came from before it came to your hand. With a piece of steak, you can imagine it came from a cow, so it's good. With something like a piece of candy bar, you can't think of it running in the wild, or growing on a tree.

Good luck and come back often.

I don't wanna steal your topic but I never thought of picking out healthy food like that before. that is a good idea to go from. I like it ha

i have changed my mind on going to the gym as well.

So you decided not to go to the gym? Well you can do tons of exercises at home, so it's no big deal.

i looking more to turn the fat into muscle,

Good luck with that. When you find out how to turn fat into muscle (which you never well), I suggest writing a book on it because everyone would want to know how the heck you do it.

I suggest that you research heavily into diet, exercise, muscle development and fat loss. When you're done researching it, you'll realize that it is never going to be possible to lose fat and gain muscle without eating a strong diet, and exercising regularly. There is no way in the entire known universe to convert fat into muscle. It's two different things.

Yes the amount of friends who aren't into fitness and ask me "so are you going to the gym to try and convert some fat into muscle then??" - Some of them don't even believe me when I say that isn't possible,*sigh* lol. But I try not to push fitness on them because it isn't something many of them care about. About 2 of my friends have gym memberships....1 of them uses it regularly :eek2:
